Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Devotional Hymns and Religious Poems While arranging music from the productions of foreign composers for the churches of this country, the author was led to feel the great want of variety in the structure of our sacred lyrics. Many a beautiful piece of music had to be laid aside, because there was not a single stanza of English poetry to which it could be adapted. Here was a temptation to endeavor in some measure to supply the deficiency. The encouragement which his earliest efforts met with, confirmed the author in his habits of versification; and this little volume is the result. Several of the hymns published anonymously, have gained a wide circulation among the American churches, and found their way across the Atlantic. These, carefully revised, are here presented in connection with a larger number which have never before appeared. The habit referred to, it will be seen, has not been wholly confined to the limits of hymnology: but the little volume is submitted to the public without farther apology. Book The Christian Book of Mystical Verse

Download or read book The Christian Book of Mystical Verse written by A. W. Tozer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... some of the best devotional verse the English language affords..." While the term "mystic" may have connotations that reach beyond traditional Christian thinking, it actually refers to a common spiritual experience that unites anyone who has fellowship with God. The poems in this book were hand-picked by Tozer and follow a logical pattern, going in line with the very nature of salvation itself and the death of Jesus on the cross, man's contemplation of his own sin, redemption, communion with God, awaiting the return of Christ, and celebrations of eternal fellowship with God in Heaven. Both intimate and exhilarating, The Christian Book of Mystical Verse is a book for anyone who seeks to worship God the Father, and who finds the rich language of Christians of old a great help in that endeavor.

Book The Hymnal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher N. Phillips
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2018-08-01
  • ISBN : 1421425939
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book The Hymnal written by Christopher N. Phillips and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the culture of living with hymnbooks offers new insight into the histories of poetry, literacy, and religious devotion. It stands barely three inches high, a small brick of a book. The pages are skewed a bit, and evidence of a small handprint remains on the worn, cheap leather covers that don’t quite close. The book bears the marks of considerable use. But why—and for whom—was it made? Christopher N. Phillips’s The Hymnal is the first study to reconstruct the practices of reading and using hymnals, which were virtually everywhere in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Isaac Watts invented a small, words-only hymnal at the dawn of the eighteenth century. For the next two hundred years, such hymnals were their owners’ constant companions at home, school, church, and in between. They were children's first books, slaves’ treasured heirlooms, and sources of devotional reading for much of the English-speaking world. Hymnals helped many people learn to memorize poetry and to read; they provided space to record family memories, pass notes in church, and carry everything from railroad tickets to holy cards to business letters. In communities as diverse as African Methodists, Reform Jews, Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics, and Unitarians, hymnals were integral to religious and literate life. An extended historical treatment of the hymn as a read text and media form, rather than a source used solely for singing, this book traces the lives people lived with hymnals, from obscure schoolchildren to Emily Dickinson. Readers will discover a wealth of connections between reading, education, poetry, and religion in Phillips’s lively accounts of hymnals and their readers.

Book Lost in Wonder Love and Praise

Download or read book Lost in Wonder Love and Praise written by Justin Wainscott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of Christian history, pastors not only served as theologians and preachers, but also as poets and hymn writers. They ministered through their preaching and their poetry, their sermons and their songs--laboring to see God's truth planted not only in people's minds, but helping it find its way into their hearts and even onto their lips. They viewed such labors as an artistic and devotional tool of catechesis, one that has largely gone missing over the last few generations. But in this new collection of hymns and poems, Justin Wainscott recaptures that rich legacy of pastor-poets, providing God's people with theology that stirs and sings. Whether his poetry pertains to matters of common grace or saving grace, the mundane or the majestic, he gives readers an opportunity to lose themselves in wonder, love, and praise. And a book like this one couldn't come at a better time. In this age of distracted reading marked mainly by skimming and scanning, our souls need the kind of slow, deep reading that poetry rewards.
