Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of the old "Ace Doubles" two-in-one books (flip one over to read the second title)--here is the fourth Wildside Mystery Double: DEVIL'S PLAGUE: A Mystery Novel, by Michael R. Collings. The scene lay tranquil and peaceful--except for the young woman's body, battered and broken at the foot of Porcupine Falls. Who was responsible? Was it the local boy, enamored and fearful of rejection; the stranger with the hidden past; or a serial killer? It's up to Lynn Hansen, recently arrived from L.A., and her new friend, Victoria Sears, to explore the intimacies of death, and solve the mystery of the Devil's Plague! DRIVING HELL'S HIGHWAY: A Crime Novel, by Gary Lovisi. He had no past and no future, only the long open road ahead of him. What would he find there, other than danger and violence? Sometimes a shred of memory, dark and fearful, gave him a hint of what he'd once been. Now he was just a loner. Darkness shrouded his heart and mind. With a trunkful of guns and a tankful of gas, he was Driving Hell's Highway! Hard-boiled crime in the 1950s paperback tradition.

Book Living I Was Your Plague

Download or read book Living I Was Your Plague written by Lyndal Roper and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed biography Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet, new perspectives on how Luther and others crafted his larger-than-life image Martin Luther was a controversial figure during his lifetime, eliciting strong emotions in friends and enemies alike, and his outsized persona has left an indelible mark on the world today. Living I Was Your Plague explores how Luther carefully crafted his own image and how he has been portrayed in his own times and ours, painting a unique portrait of the man who set in motion a revolution that sundered Western Christendom. Renowned Luther biographer Lyndal Roper examines how the painter Lucas Cranach produced images that made the reformer an instantly recognizable character whose biography became part of Lutheran devotional culture. She reveals what Luther's dreams have to say about his relationships and discusses how his masculinity was on the line in his devastatingly crude and often funny polemical attacks. Roper shows how Luther's hostility to the papacy was unshaken to the day he died, how his deep-rooted anti-Semitism infused his theology, and how his memorialization has given rise to a remarkable flood of kitsch, from "Here I Stand" socks to Playmobil Luther. Lavishly illustrated, Living I Was Your Plague is a splendid work of cultural history that sheds new light on the complex and enduring legacy of Luther and his image.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Weeds: With Descriptions of All the Most Pernicious and Troublesome Plants in the United States and Canada, Their Habits of Growth and Distribution, With Methods of Control Nature is the great farmer. Continually she sows and reaps, making all the forces of the universe her tools and helpers. The sun's rays, wind, rain, frost and snow, insects and birds, animals small and great, even to the humble burrowing worms of the earth, all work mightily for her and a harvest of some kind is absolutely sure. And to the people who must wrest a living from the soil, not only for themselves but for all mankind besides, it must seem that Nature's favorites are the hardy, aggressive, and often useless and harmful plants which they have named weeds. Yet, when man interferes with the Great Mother's plans and insists that the crops shall be only such as may benefit and enrich himself, she seems to yield a willing obedience, and under his guidance does immensely better work than when uncontrolled. But Dame Nature is an "eye-servant"; only by the sternest determination and the most unrelaxing vigilance can her fellow-worker subdue the earth to his will and fulfill the destiny foreshadowed in that primal blessing, so sadly disguised and misnamed, when the first man was told, "Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat of the herb of the field." A stern decree. But the civilization of the peoples of the earth is measured by the forward state of their agriculture; and agriculture in its simplest terms is the compelling of the soil to yield only such products as shall conduce to the welfare of the people who live upon it. It resolves itself into a contest with nature as to what plants shall be permitted to grow, and the discovery of the easiest, surest, and most economical means of securing a victory in the strife.
