Book Devil s Advocate Economics The Other Side of the Stories

Download or read book Devil s Advocate Economics The Other Side of the Stories written by Katherine Davis Butler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With economic and social issues, we all have ideas of what is correct. A closer inspection reveals that things may not be as we thought, and invites questions. The answers may be contrary to prior opinion. Should we strive for fairness and equality, or will doing so create some unintended consequences? Is it possible that people that are viewed negatively ?illegal immigrants, big-game hunters, price gougers, and ticket scalpers ?create more economic benefits than costs? Is discrimination an oversimplified and over-blamed boogeyman of convenience? Do the rich actually pay MORE than their fair share of taxes? What happens if we tax the rich too much? Devil's Advocate Economics examines these questions and more, inviting readers to think about the other side of the story. The other side may not be the popular or well-publicized result, but the conclusion reached by examining incentives, consequences of policy, data about behavior, and the general well-being of individuals.

The rebel leader has learned the archeological dig Baumstark was working on just might harbor a biblical relic, a tiara called the Devil's Crown. Legend has it that the wearer will gain supernatural powers endowed by the devil himself. With plans of universal domination, the lizard eyed Basil Crump believes Walker is the only hope he has of making Baumstalk tell where to look for the find, but he harbors an unyielding grudge against Walker that makes him as dangerous as nitroglycerin left out in the sun. When Walker arrives on the scene he soon finds out Crump is the least of his problems; Baumstark's flirtatious granddaughter is smitten with him. Walker must keep reminding himself she is only sixteen years old. Worse yet, when he finds the accursed Crown inside a cave, Walker is unable to resist trying it out. Instantly he loses all self-control and he tries to force Heather to submit to the unthinkable. Heather nearly brains Walker attempting to escape. She later fears she killed him. So ends Walker's last Adventure... or is it only the beginning of an even greater adventure?

Book A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away

Download or read book A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away written by Philip Ayers and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away applies the principles of God found in the Book of Proverbs to daily living. Illustrations are used to trigger the memories of its readers to past and present experiences in life; hopefully, causing the lesson of each devotion to profoundly impact the reader. These illustrations stem from relationships, home, work, play, decisions, reactions, thoughts, injustice and justice. Some are humorous and some very serious. Each one demonstrates the theme of that verse. The Book of Proverbs is as timely as time itself. Times have changed but people have not. They still face the hard issues of life: the same fears and hurts, the same temptations and sin, the same struggle with what is right and wrong, and the same questions about what role God really plays in their life. This devotional study aids its readers in getting a grip on these challenges. Philip Ayers was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on March 2nd, 1948. He is the second born of a family of five. Very early in his life, his family moved to Salem, Virginia, where he resided until he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. He served in the Viet Nam conflict. He was wounded three times, and was awarded the Navy Commendation Metal with Combat "V" for heroic action in the face of the enemy. Philip played quarterback for the Marine Corps' national football team, the Quantico Marines. He was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant. Philip was saved on March 30th, 1980. Jesus Christ called him to ministry in 1981. He is the pastor of a local church in Roanoke, Virginia. He brings a large pool of experience and Bible knowledge to his readers.

Book The Devil s Playbook

Download or read book The Devil s Playbook written by Lauren Etter and published by Crown. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • Big Tobacco meets Silicon Valley in this “deeply reported and illuminating” (The New York Times Book Review) corporate exposé of what happened when two of the most notorious industries collided—and the vaping epidemic was born. “The best business book I’ve read since Bad Blood.”—Jonathan Eig, New York Times bestselling author of Ali: A Life Howard Willard lusted after Juul. As the CEO of tobacco giant Philip Morris’s parent company and a veteran of the industry’s long fight to avoid being regulated out of existence, he grew obsessed with a prize he believed could save his company—the e-cigarette, a product with all the addictive upside of the original without the same apparent health risks and bad press. Meanwhile, in Silicon Valley, Adam Bowen and James Monsees began working on a device that was meant to save lives and destroy Big Tobacco, but they ended up baking the industry’s DNA into their invention’s science and marketing. Ultimately, Juul’s e-cigarette was so effective and so market-dominating that it put the company on a collision course with Philip Morris and sparked one of the most explosive public health crises in recent memory. In a deeply reported account, award-winning journalist Lauren Etter tells a riveting story of greed and deception in one of the biggest botched deals in business history. Etter shows how Philip Morris’s struggle to innovate left Willard desperate to acquire Juul, even as his own team sounded alarms about the startup’s reliance on underage customers. And she shows how Juul’s executives negotiated a lavish deal that let them pocket the lion’s share of Philip Morris’s $12.8 billion investment while government regulators and furious parents mounted a campaign to hold the company’s feet to the fire. The Devil’s Playbook is the inside story of how Juul’s embodiment of Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” ethos wrought havoc on American health, and how a beleaguered tobacco company was seduced by the promise of a new generation of addicted customers. With both companies’ eyes on the financial prize, neither anticipated the sudden outbreak of vaping-linked deaths that would terrorize a nation, crater Juul’s value, end Willard’s career, and show the costs in human life of the rush to riches—while Juul’s founders, board members, and employees walked away with a windfall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II introduced a new chapter to the history of elite troops - the parachute and glider-borne soldiers of Germany and the Allies, whose story is told in this book. Despite their experimental nature, there is no doubting the successes achieved by both sides. The story of the German airborne corps is traced from its inception - the policemen co-opted into becoming Goering's paras, their army rivals, the revelations of the German disasters, and triumph in Norway, Holland and Belgium before their ultimate test of May 1941. The crucial Battle of Crete is described through the experiences of men who were there, the struggle that broke the back of Hitler's airborne army. Late starters, the British Red Berets came to achieve worldwide fame as crack troops, and the book includes the tales of men who volunteered at the start and saw it through to the end; the triumphs and tragedies of the ordinary soldier, proud to serve in these distinguished regiments. Readers will find not only authentic detail and personal stories, but insights into airborne operations.

Download or read book The Devil s Pope written by Adrian Lumenti and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There will be the devil to pay ... but what price will he demand?” It’s the year 999, and as the first millennium draws to a close, many people throughout Europe are convinced that the world is going to end along with the end of that year. A sudden spate of fearful events makes it seem as if the final end is indeed approaching. Then, in the midst of all this, a mysterious figure appears in northern Italy, giving rousing sermons all along his trip to Rome. This strange but charismatic figure, supposedly a monk from “nowhere and everywhere”, is a worker of seemingly miraculous cures. Appearing first in northern Italy, he enlists an army of devotees who follow him on his mission to Rome, the heart of the Christian world at that time. Before long, the mission of this strange holy man intertwines with the plans of 19-year-old Emperor Otto III to build the greatest empire the West has ever seen and the devoted pope who desperately seeks to reform and re-sanctify the Church that is the center of his life. This is a historical fiction that speculates what could happen when evil forces set out to corrupt absolutely and then seize power. Packed with far more solid historical facts than The Da Vinci Code, it’s also a thriller that invites us to witness a cunning battle between the forces of Good and the forces of Evil for nothing less than the fate of all humanity.
