Book excerpt: Deserted by his mother and abandoned by his father at just three months old, Jerry Coyne was sent to live in a Catholic children's home run by nuns of the order of the Sisters of Nazareth. Life soon settled into a rhythm and then, one day, the beatings started. Harsh, vicious punishments became part of everyday life for the bemused little boy as the nuns attempted to beat the Devil out of him. Jerry began to hide behind bad behaviour and at the age of 12, his defiance resulted in him being sent to a boarding for boys with behavioural problems. Life then got worse when his housemaster, the man whose job it was to take care of him, began a regime of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Years of self-hatred and guilt led to Jerry suffering from a severe stammer and, eventually, he tried to hang himself. This was the turning point and, after finally finding the courage to go to the authorities, Jerry and numerous other victims came forward and were instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of their abuser. Devil's Child is the devastating true story of a childhood destroyed by abuse and of a young man's struggle to try to come to terms with the past and believe in the future.

It presents a wide variety of amazing tales ranging from the blooming and evolution of circus acrobatics in early twentieth-century Malabar to the sensational legal battles following the ban of wild animals and children from the circus ring in the twenty-first century. Alongside extensive fieldwork and interviews, the author has used memorabilia including photographs, notices, posters, letters, diaries, unpublished autobiographies, private papers, and recollections of the circus community to chronicle the hitherto untold story of the Indian circus. The book paves the way for a new sociocultural analysis of performance genres and popular culture in the subcontinent against several overlapping contexts. These include the remaking of caste and gender identities, transformation of physical cultures and bodies, interventions of the colonial and postcolonial states, and emergence of new transregional and transnational spaces.

Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life. When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Percent Devils and Their Satanic Tools by Curtis Alan Woods, JD, MSAJ, BA One Percent Devils and Their Satanic Tools addresses the rampant moral crisis in a dozen professions. Moral politicians, religious leaders, news media and economists are allowing One Percent Devils and their Satanic Tools (Republican politicians, preachers and the press) to gradually eliminate and replace democracy, moral capitalism, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution with an Anglo-Saxon new world order that would be as tyrannical and immoral as Nazi and atheistic communist orders. Satanic Tools disrespect, suppress, and bully anyone who is not a male, Caucasian and a Judeo-Christian. They are against: equal rights; justice; fair distribution of national income and wealth; education (so voters are unintelligent); regulation of any business; and social safety nets for their victims. They don’t want Medicare, Medicaid or Affordable Health Care so victims die and taxes can be reduced. Immoral means to immoral ends includes: Orwellian Repetitive Lies; and Hitler Nixon type Machiavellian Divide and Conquer Wedge Issue Tactics so people vote against their own socio-economic interests, freedoms and rights.

Book The Games with Devils Are Over

Download or read book The Games with Devils Are Over written by Lucien Nzeyimana and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about love, hate, disappointment and betrayal. "Eros" is represented by Jack's love towards Nikita. His attraction to Nikita embodies the force of love. The counterpart was hate, as Nikita's feelings were all directed to the opposite side, killers of her father, brother and ex boyfriends. Philia and agape helped Jack get along with his destroyers and rivals. Jack is also fond of people who do the right thing. His case is an example of true forgiveness. He saw Dick, Geram, and Juvenhack as human beings worthy of respect. He forgave and loved the very people whose desire was not only to destroy his family but also to annihilate a group of people. Though Jack never liked their actions since childhood, he still treated them with kindness, love and respect. Jack's life was marked by a conflict between folly and resignation. Folly is portrayed by evils of oppression and dictatorship of Evildoers who ruled the postcolonial Burundi. The main character of Dickson Rushatsihori is presented as the symbol of evil, the prototype of Evildoers. He is a rigid and corrupted individual who would never wish peace to his fellow citizens. Rather than seeing Burundians living in harmony with one another, this proponent of the status quo would only wish evil, chaos and anarchy to his country. The theme of folly is also depicted in Jack's relationship with Nikita Chissocco. It is illustrated by Nikita's betrayal of his love for her. Nikita expresses her folly through abusive language, domestic violence, infidelities and her collaboration with Evildoers such as Dick, Juvenhack Zim and Geram to destroy her husband's dignity. Jack was forced to a war for the liberation of his mind emprisoned in his own house. He hoped that folly and resignation would eventually coil up. He would not accept that his destiny was to suffer all his life. Folly and resignation finally collided, forcing Jack to defend his honor and dignity. By breaking up with Dick and Nikita's folly, he liberated himself from a heavy burden. He pulled himself together to reconstruct his life with more strength and courage. This captivating story is an account of one's life, yet it will touch those of so many. Not only does it bring into the fore the injustices of this world, it also shows that no matter what life throws at us, we all seek love and closeness with another human being.
