Book Modern Times Literary Change

Download or read book Modern Times Literary Change written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Times. Literary Change seeks to redefine what we mean by "literature" and "history" in European modernism studies. This book develops a new functionalist approach for modern literary historiography and introduces alternative methods for dealing with European writings and their multiple mediatizations, histories and functions. Modern Times. Literary Change illustrates these new insights in chapters dealing with canonized figures (such as Robert Musil, André Breton, Man Ray and Denis de Rougemont) as well as internationally less known writers (such as Belgian avant-gardists Louis Scutenaire and Paul van Ostaijen and Italian novelist Enrico Emanuelli). For both its theoretical argument and its subtle readings this book will be of interest to all those who study European literature from the modernist period. MDRN is a research-group based at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and supervised by Jan Baetens, Sascha Bru, Dirk de Geest, David Martens and Bart Van den Bossche.

Book A Primer on Property Tax

Download or read book A Primer on Property Tax written by William J. McCluskey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The chapters in this book explore in detail the choices regarding both the structure and administration of the property tax, drawing on the extensive knowledge the authors have acquired in studying property taxes around the world. The chapters provide a wide-ranging treatment of the design choices and administrative tasks, both in terms of the breadth of design options and administrative tasks covered and the depth of the discussion. The authors describe the range of design choices, discuss the associated issues and the advantages and disadvantages for each, and present the criteria to help choose among the options.’ From the book’s Foreword by David L. Sjoquist, Professor of Economics and Dan E. Sweat Scholar Chair in Educational and Community Policy, Georgia State University Property taxation is a key element in providing a solid foundation and a stable funding source for basic public services. Developing and implementing a property tax system is a complex task. This complexity is compounded by the diversity of legal, cultural and historical contexts of policymakers and tax administrators. The World Development Report (1999-2000), Entering the 21st Century puts fiscal decentralization at the top of the development agenda. This makes local taxation - and especially the property tax option - of critical importance to both tax and land policy, as well as the broader development agenda. A Primer on Property Tax: Administration and Policy provides the reader with an analysis of issues surrounding property tax, including economics, law, public finance, decentralisation, valuation, GIS and property tax reform. A key strength of the book lies in the vast international experience of the authors and the book will provide for the first time material which is topical, cutting-edge and highly relevant to many of the disciplines involved in property taxation. The authors examine the criteria applied to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of property tax, discuss the main valuation methods and the economic principles underpinning them and review the legal and administrative aspects of property tax worldwide.

Book The Rentier State

This book, Volume Two in the Nation, State and Integration in the Arab World research project carried out by the Istituto Affari Internazionali, examine the issue of the modernization of rentier states’ public finance, which may well entail important modifications in their domestic politics.

  • Author : Giacomo Luciani
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-07-24
  • ISBN : 131741151X
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book The Arab State written by Giacomo Luciani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been argued that Arab states are arbitrary political creations, lacking historical or present legitimacy. This book, first published in 1990, provides a different picture of ‘the Arab state’, drawing on historical, economic, philosophical and sociological perspectives to give a balanced and convincing view of the complex reality of contemporary Arab politics. The contributors, from the Arab countries, from Europe and the United States, investigate the roots of the nation state in the Arab world, evaluating in particular the economic bases of individual states. They discuss the evolution of Arab societies and the way this is reflected in different states, and examine the problems of domestic and international integration in the Arab context. Original and comprehensive in its findings, this is an essential text on the fundamental political structure of the Arab world. Its interdisciplinary breadth makes possible an entirely new reading of the political reality of the Middle East.

Book War and the Rise of the State

Download or read book War and the Rise of the State written by Bruce D. Porter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States make war, but war also makes states. As Publishers Weekly notes, “Porter, a political scientist at Brigham Young University, demonstrates that wars have been catalysts for increasing the size and power of Western governments since the Renaissance. The state’s monopoly of effective violence has diminished not only individual rights and liberties, but also the ability of local communities and private associates to challenge the centralization of authority. Porter’s originality lies in his thesis that war, breaking down barriers of class, gender, ethnicity, and ideology, also contributes to meritocracy, mobility, and, above all, democratization. Porter also posits the emergence of the “Scientific Warfare State,” a political system in which advanced technology would render obsolete mass participation in war. This provocative study merits wide circulation and serious discussion.”

Book The Military Revolution and Political Change

Download or read book The Military Revolution and Political Change written by Brian Downing and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To examine the long-run origins of democracy and dictatorship, Brian Downing focuses on the importance of medieval political configurations and of military modernization in the early modern period. He maintains that in late medieval times an array of constitutional arrangements distinguished Western Europe from other parts of the world and predisposed it toward liberal democracy. He then looks at how medieval constitutionalism was affected by the "military revolution" of the early modern era--the shift from small, decentralized feudal levies to large standing armies. Downing won the American Political Science Association's Gabriel Almond Award for the dissertation on which this book was based.

Book Blood and Debt

  • Author : Miguel Angel Centeno
  • Publisher : Penn State Press

Download or read book Blood and Debt written by Miguel Angel Centeno and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does war play in political development? Our understanding of the rise of the nation-state is based heavily on the Western European experience of war. Challenging the dominance of this model, Blood and Debt looks at Latin America's much different experience as more relevant to politics today in regions as varied as the Balkans and sub-Saharan Africa. The book's illuminating review of the relatively peaceful history of Latin America from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries reveals the lack of two critical prerequisites needed for war: a political and military culture oriented toward international violence, and the state institutional capacity to carry it out. Using innovative new data such as tax receipts, naming of streets and public monuments, and conscription records, the author carefully examines how war affected the fiscal development of the state, the creation of national identity, and claims to citizenship. Rather than building nation-states and fostering democratic citizenship, he shows, war in Latin America destroyed institutions, confirmed internal divisions, and killed many without purpose or glory.
