However, in recent years, we have seen a move in manufacturing industries for the use of X-ray computed tomography; first to give qualitative information about the internal geometry and defects in a component, and more recently, as a fully-quantitative technique for dimensional and materials analysis. This trend is primarily due to the ability of X-ray computed tomography to give a high-density and multi-scale representation of both the external and internal geometry of a component, in a non-destructive, non-contact and relatively fast way. But, due to the complexity of X-ray computed tomography, there are remaining metrological issues to solve and the specification standards are still under development. This book will act as a one-stop-shop resource for students and users of X-ray computed tomography in both academia and industry. It presents the fundamental principles of the technique, detailed descriptions of the various components (hardware and software), current developments in calibration and performance verification and a wealth of example applications. The book will also highlight where there is still work to do, in the perspective that X-ray computed tomography will be an essential part of Industry 4.0.

Indeed, with its frequent requirements for high total dose regimes, CT has increased the use of contrast agents. Even helical/spiral CT which, it was initially argued, should reduce contrast as well as radiation loads, may actually require just as much or more of both because of the potential it offers for multi-phase scanning. Iodinated intravascular X-ray contrast agents, especially the more recently developed non-ionic agents, continue therefore to play a pivotal role in clinical imaging. These succinct and authoritative articles, originally appearing in the journal Advances in X-ray Contrast, range sufficiently widely for their compilation in this volume to be considered a mini-textbook on the water-soluble iodinated X-ray contrast agents and their applications. Each is written by an acknowledged and experienced expert in the field. Book excerpt: This thesis presents research on novel X-ray imaging methods that improve the study of specimens with small density differences, revealing their inner structure and density distribution. Exploiting the phase shift of X-rays in a material can significantly increase the image contrast compared to conventional absorption imaging. This thesis provides a practical guide to X-ray phase-contrast imaging with a strong focus on X-ray speckle-based imaging, the most recently developed phase-sensitive method. X-ray speckle-based imaging only requires a piece of abrasive paper in addition to the standard X-ray imaging setup. Its simplicity and robustness combined with the compatibility with laboratory X-ray sources, make it an ideal candidate for wide user uptake in a range of fields. An in-depth overview of the state of the art of X-ray speckle-based imaging and its latest developments is given in this thesis. It, furthermore, explores a broad range of applications, from X-ray optics characterisation, to biomedical imaging for 3D virtual histology and geological studies of volcanic rocks, demonstrating is promising potential. Moreover, the speckle-based technique is placed in the context of other phase-sensitive X-ray imaging methods to assist in the choice of a suitable method, hence serving as a guide and reference work for future users.

Book excerpt: The application of X-ray computed tomography (CT) for aircraft and aerospace structure and ancillary equipment has been investigated in the Advanced Development of X-Ray Computed Tomography Applications demonstration (CTAD) program sponsored by the NDE Branch of the Materials Directorate at the Air Force Wright Laboratory (WL). X-ray CT offers a new inspection capability for aircraft hardware that provides quantitative information on material density/constituents and dimensions. This capability has economic value as an engineering tool for improving the evaluation and control of materials and processes used in aircraft/aerospace structures. The CTAD effort has investigated a wide variety of application areas for CT. These include electronics, closed systems, castings, composites, and advanced materials and processes. Applications of CT in these areas include: configuration control, anomaly detection, dimensional measurements and material uniformity. By using the actual dimensional characteristics of features and anomalies in a component, and the material characteristics, such as density and elemental composition, that are derivable from the CT data, engineers can perform a variety of analyses to arrive at quantitative measurements that are of economical value to improving the overall product cycle from development to deployment. Until specifications requiring CT are implemented, CT will be employed primarily as a supplement to other NDE methodologies for engineering evaluations such as product development/ material characterization measurements, failure analysis and engineering problem solving, noninvasive micrography and geometry acquisition.
