Side by side, words like 'alienation', 'exploitation' and 'insecurity' are being 'used' across the region to instigate the dangerous problem of insurgency. This has kept the region continuously in a state of flux devoid of political or economic stability so crucial for any meaningful development, negating the effects of whatever little economic development has taken place in the region. Centre's continuous development initiatives under the Special Category Status releases huge amount of development funds without creating necessary credit absorption capacity in the economy and consequently has remained unsuccessful in delivering the results woefully dismal have been the half hearted attempts made by the different State Governments in the region from time to time in the name of development. Most of these efforts were directed only towards extracting more assistance and more grants from the Centre. The book revisits these failed initiatives and re-examine the crucial areas while searching for an alternative. The volume focuses on an integrated approach towards inter-related issues in the entire region with 'development' as the pivotal and overarching factor. The collection of seventeen articles are, categorized into five broad sub-sections, extending from political dynamism to economic intricacies, social conflicts and the role of institutions which gives us an opportunity to come across the thoughts of scholars to trace the roots of and connections between, the problems that plague this region and eventually to forge a common strategy to address the issue of backwardness of this region.

Book Social Change and Development

Download or read book Social Change and Development written by D. V. Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages itself with a critical understanding of the changes taking place both at the structural and cultural levels in the northeast of India, a region which has been studied more for its instances of militancy, insurgency, and terrorism. Significant changes are examined, such as: the growth of a middle class * an accentuation of socio-economic inequalities * a sharpening of ethnic/cultural identities * the changing demographic structure * a deepening of the process of democratization * a weakening of the principle of egalitarianism * the gradual entrenchment of the principle of hierarchy. Besides this, the responses of communities to agencies and processes of social changes are the subject matter of incisive analysis. The development model is critically examined, which has been introduced in the northeast, without taking into account the sensitivities and sensibilities, of communities, leading to eruption of feelings of discontent and alienation.

Book Identity Contestation and Development in Northeast India

Download or read book Identity Contestation and Development in Northeast India written by Komol Singha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s Northeast has long been riven by protracted armed conflicts for secession and movements for other forms of autonomy. This book shows how the conflicts in the region have gradually shifted towards inter-ethnic feuds, rendered more vicious by the ongoing multiplication of ethnicities in an already heterogeneous region. It further traces the intricate contours of the conflicts and the attempts of the dominant groups to establish their hegemonies against the consent of the smaller groups, as well as questions the efficacy of the state’s interventions. The volume also engages with the recurrent demands for political autonomy, and the resultant conundrum that hobbles the region’s economic and political development processes. Lucid, topical and thorough in analysis, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in political science, sociology, development studies and peace & conflict studies, particularly those concerned with Northeast India.
