The world is awash with financial crises, conflict based socio economic cum political upheavals, poverty driven suffering and abject social inequalities. Increasingly, education is experiencing the intrusion of socio economic market philosophy. Hence, education is obliged to forge closer links with industry, commerce, and the world of work. So it is imperative that a student of social science acquire a working knowledge of the socio economic frameworks from which social, economic and educational challenges emerge. The book is written from a firm conviction that economics and the world of business are of immense value to improving the lives of individuals, groups and nations. Towards these ends, the book provides a general background to the elements, theories and characteristics of socio economic growth and development. By surveying the social structures, their formations, their principal activities and problems, the book gives the student, and reader, a broad spectrum of the nature of the development world and the role of education in socio economic growth. Further, the concern of the book is with attempting to answer the fundamental questions of what, why, who and how of socio economic growth, development and education. It is full of penetrating analyses of development issues at local, regional and international levels. It is intended to be compulsory reading for students of socio economics, business management, entrepreneurship, development and education. Above all, it should be an essential tool, and constant companion, for those interested in investment issues and strategies. Armed with the knowledge, and skills, inherent in this book, the sky is the limit for those intending to get immersed in the field of socio economic growth and development. It acts as a spring board for budding entrepreneurs. I have endeavoured to work on a natural free flow, and continuity in the development of topics. Included in the book are relevant topics on figures and statistics in socio economic growth, development and education. There is a relevant section on information, technology and communication as they relate to development studies. All these are relevant and topical to the student, and reader. Included at the end is a comprehensive, instructing and elaborate glossary of terms used, and implied, in the book. The glossary, in itself, is intended to act as a quick reference teaching and learning unit. The whole idea is to give a firm, substantive base for the student, and reader, as well as a balanced, integrated picture of development studies, socio economics, entrepreneurship and education. Last but very important is the need to acknowledge the help, sources and encouragement from many people. No book is written in isolation, so I have benefited from contact, comments and discussions with a number of our students, colleagues and successful development practitioners. The temptation here would be to mention them by name, but the list would fill another volume. It suffices to say that I owe them my greatest debt. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, I bear the burden of any shortcomings, errors and omissions that remain.

Book excerpt: In the United States, broad study in an array of different disciplines â€"arts, humanities, science, mathematics, engineeringâ€" as well as an in-depth study within a special area of interest, have been defining characteristics of a higher education. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. It explores evidence regarding the value of integrating more STEMM curricula and labs into the academic programs of students majoring in the humanities and arts and evidence regarding the value of integrating curricula and experiences in the arts and humanities into college and university STEMM education programs.

In most developing countries, education development have been immensely lagging due to factors such as poor planning and management practices, and ineffective policies development and implementation among several others. As a consequence, particularly in Nigeria, the education sector began to lose its integrity in terms of quality and productivity since old frameworks for education policies, development and implementation are still in use after they have become long obsolete. To garner an understanding and gain insight into these challenges and to devise possible approaches to propel sustainable education development in Nigeria, this research project was embarked upon using geographic information system technology as the primary tool for scientific investigation. And based on the result from the analysis and existing literatures, a model for sustainable education development was presented. The output of the research project revealed a method of planning, management, and development in education through spatial analysis of education data over time and space. The research also examines the challenges or implications of the spatial pattern of education development in Nigeria and attempt to define sustainable education developments in terms of four major variables - accessibility of education, quality of education, productivity of education and other related factors such as government policies and religious beliefs. It was discovered that there remains a great imbalance and uneven education development across the states of Nigeria. Some states are less privileged academically, while others have high academic potentials.

The analysis presents three main perspectives – monuments and sites, historic towns and territories – through the processes and results of major heritage projects conducted within the TCCP, in association with the European Commission, since 2003. It is hoped that the experience and methodologies of the TCCP will provide insight for future initiatives, capitalising on the opportunity to situate heritage in transversal projects that address major contemporary issues such as demographic change, migration, socio-economic crises and climate change.
