Book excerpt: Dry edible bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important pulse crops in the world. Unfortunately, limited information is available on its growth, yield, soil moisture dynamics, water use, crop coefficients, and yield response under furrow and sprinkler irrigation system. Field experiments were conducted at Powell Research and Extension Center, Powell, Wyoming, USA. The study was conducted to assess dry bean water use, growth and yield dynamics, and crop water productivity. Five irrigation gradients were evaluated FIT (full irrigation treatment), 125% FIT, 75% FIT, 50% FIT, and 25% FIT under furrow irrigation, and linear-move sprinkler irrigation system. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) ranged from 186 – 438 mm and 190 – 409 mm in the 2017 and 2018 growing season, respectively, under sprinkler irrigation system. Under furrow irrigation system, ETc ranged from 332 – 366 mm and 332 – 378 mm in 2017 and 2018 growing season, respectively. A linear relationship was observed between the growth traits and yield components; however, the relationships were weaker for furrow irrigation. Also, a linear relationship existed between grain yield and ETc, whereas, a quadratic relation was observed between grain yield and irrigation and total water use. The crop water productivity was higher under sprinkler irrigation. Overall, furrow irrigation promotes better root development, however, the tradeoff in water use efficiency and also, the risk of waterlogging, and flooding stress associated with furrow irrigation are considerable. The crop coefficient (Kco) value on average for the FIT for initial-, mid-, and late-season were 0.61, 1.16, and 0.37, respectively, under sprinkler irrigation. The crop coefficient (Kco) value on average for the FIT for initial-, mid-, and late-season were 0.74, 1.07, and 0.43, respectively, under furrow irrigation.
