Book Mechanisms for Long Term Innovation

Download or read book Mechanisms for Long Term Innovation written by Masatoshi Fujiwara and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how a long-term innovation can take place based on historical analyses of the development of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane from the early 1950s to the mid-2010s. The RO membrane is a critical material for desalination that is a key to solve water shortages becoming serious in many places of the world. The authors conducted in-depth field studies as well as analyses of rich archival data to demonstrate how researchers, engineers, managers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers interacted each other for this material innovation to be realized. A series of historical analyses in this book uncovered that initial government supports, strategic niche markets, emergence of breakthrough technology, and company-specific rationales played significant roles for companies to overcome four types of uncertainty, technological, market, competition, and social/organizational ones, and enabled the companies to persistently invest in the development and commercialization of the RO membrane. This book depicts that innovation does not arise on a sudden, but that it is actualized through long lasting process with turns and twists, which is driven by many non-economic rationales beyond economic motives.

Book Reverse Osmosis Membrane Research

Download or read book Reverse Osmosis Membrane Research written by H. Lonsdale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Th i s book had its orl gl n in the sympos i urn on "Polymers for Desalination" sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and held in September, 1971 in Wash ington D. C. at the 162nd national meeting of the Society. However, the book is not simply the proceedings of that symposium. A num ber of additional papers were contributed by other workers in the field, and the original papers presented at the symposium have, for the most part, been expanded. The book thus represents a broad cross section of membrane research and development activities in the United States and abroad within the field of reverse osmosis. The purposes of the book are to bring attention to important new developments in this field, to suggest what the next generation of reverse osmosis equipment may look like, and to indicate where fur ther research and development are needed. The vast majority of the papers collected here represent work supported by the Office of Saline Water of the United States Department of the Interior, and the emphasis here is clearly on the application of the reverse os mosis process to water purification. However, many of the concepts, methods, and conclusions are expected to be useful in other areas of membrane science and technology.

Book Ultrathin Membranes for Treating Metal Finishing Effluents by Reverse Osmosis

Download or read book Ultrathin Membranes for Treating Metal Finishing Effluents by Reverse Osmosis written by Lee Theodore Rozelle and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen different reverse osmosis membranes were evaluated as to their ability to separate heavy metal ions, acids, bases, and cyanides from metal finishing wastewaters. Although no one membrane was found to be effective for all effluents, membranes of 5 different polymers showed considerable promise. Simulated acidic nickel, iron, zinc, and copper plating bath rinses were effectively treated by ultrathin membranes of cellulose acetate, cellulose methyl sulfonate, O-propyl sulfonic acid, or B-glucan acetate diaminoethyl ether. The investigations have demonstrated that ultrathin membrane separation performance can be modified by: Modifying the chemical composition; Optimizing the annealing conditions; Producing as thin a membrane as practical; and Using a polysulfone support film. Preliminary engineering considerations for reverse osmosis applications to treatment and recycle of acidic copper plating bath rinse waters are presented.

Book Seawater Reverse Osmosis SWRO Desalination Energy consumption in plants advanced low energy technologies and future developments for improving energy efficiency

Download or read book Seawater Reverse Osmosis SWRO Desalination Energy consumption in plants advanced low energy technologies and future developments for improving energy efficiency written by Seungkwan Hong and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy consumption is a critical issue associated with seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination, although the SWRO has been regarded as one of the most energy-efficient processes for seawater desalination. This means that SWRO involves a larger amount of fossil fuel and other energy sources for water production, which imposes a negative impact on the environment such as greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, the high-energy consumption of SWRO should be addressed to minimize environmental impacts and to allow for sustainable exploitation of seawater. However, the recent trend of energy consumption in SWRO seems to have reached a saturation point, which is still higher than theoretical minimum energy. To find new and innovative strategies for lowering current energy consumption, a comprehensive understanding of energy use in SWRO plants from theoretical analysis to actual energy consumption in real SWRO plants is required. This book can provide readers with information about the current state of energy consumption in actual SWRO plants, the fundamental understanding of energy use of SWRO plants from theoretical point of view, and advanced technologies and processes that could be applied for future energy reduction. In addition, this book will offer a detailed methodology for analyzing energy issues in seawater desalination. Through this book, readers will obtain an insight into how to deal with and analyze the energy issues in SWRO desalination.
