Download or read book The Origin and Fate of Somites written by North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Scientific Affairs Division and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text investigates advances in the field of sommites and integrates them into the accumulated knowledge of how sommites form and differentiate. Although the book focuses on the formation and patterning of somites it will encompass a broader life history of a somite. Topics include events attending gastrulation, which foreshadow somite formation, to the subsequent contributions that somites make to neighbouring regions such as musculature, limbs and axial skeleton. There is also a discussion of the origins of cells that eventually give rise to somites. This book brings together investigators from NATO and NATO partner countries who are employing both classical and molecular approaches to the analysis of somitogenesis.

Book Somites in Developing Embryos

Download or read book Somites in Developing Embryos written by Ruth Bellairs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somite development is a unique and important topic; unique because somitic mesoderm is the first tissue to become segmented, important because the somites - once established - exert a profound influence on other seg mental structures which form later. Somite development is of interest at a number of levels. In one aspect, demarcation of a specific number of somites and size regulation, it is a particularly intriguing example of embryonic pattern formation, 'especially in vew of its possible relation to homoeobox-controlled segmentation in insects. At another level, somite development has long been studied by compara tive anatomists, but only recently has new light been thrown on such sub jects as segmentation of the head, proposed in the 18th century by Goethe and now a live issue for developmental biologists. Somit es are simple when they first appear, but very complex structures arise from them. These include the vertebrae and the axial and other muscles and consequently there is a wealth of morphogenetic problems to be explored. Sometimes their morphogenesis is disturbed, by genetic or environ mental factors, and there are many clinical conditions which arise as a result.

Book Somitogenesis Part 2

Download or read book Somitogenesis Part 2 written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-01-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters contained in this two-volume set provide a broad perspective on the novel strategies and conceptual paradigms that drive the current resurgence of interest in somitogenesis - the process by which somites form and elaborate differentiated tissues and structures. Because somites are a ubiquitous feature of vertebrate embryos, they can be studied in a variety of experimental animal models including those amenable to genetic (zebrafish, mammalian), molecular/genetic (mammalian, avian) as well as those already well established for classical experimental embryological and cell biological studies (amphibians, avian). The wide variety of experimental approaches to somitogenesis that are presented in these volumes will leave the reader with a broad perspective on how current research in somitogenesis is helping to solve fundamental questions in vertebrate development and morphogenesis. Novel transcriptional mechanisms that control repetitive pattern formation Wide-scale genetic screens for mutations affecting somitogenesis Molecular/genetic control of pattern and tissue formation during somitogenesis Transplantation of mouse embryo somites Classical embryological approaches and concepts Evolutionary perspectives on somitogenesis

Book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology

Download or read book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology written by Lawrence D. Longo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development program. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of – and future approaches to diagnosing and treating – pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity.
