Book Development of Sustainable Masonry Brick

Download or read book Development of Sustainable Masonry Brick written by Tintu Kizhakkethundathil Tomy and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementation of environmentally-friendly and cost-effective building designs has been a persistent challenge to the civil engineering community. The current study aims to develop innovative masonry bricks which could open up the prospects in the future for inexpensive construction. It is also envisioned that if adopted, the proposed process of the brick fabrication could benefit the brick manufacturing industry by curtailing the carbon dioxide foot-print and firing energy levels without compromising the prescribed mechanical and physical properties of the resulting product. The research explores the potential of incorporating HBS-polymer which is a biologically-inert product produced after various treatment processes in the Environmental Laboratory of Lassonde, and Incinerated Sewage Sludge Ash (ISSA) obtained from biological treatment facilities as alternative raw materials in manufacturing low cost and environmentally-friendly masonry bricks. The development of geopolymer masonry bricks, that ensures minimum of 40% reuse of waste glass by weight per brick is an another actively pursued area of the current research. The geo-polymerization process was done using quarried shale, Recycled Crushed Glass (RCG) and sodium silicate. In contrast to the conventional masonry bricks fired exclusively over 1000 degree Celsius for no less than 24 hours, the geopolymer bricks were made at a firing temperature of 400 degree Celsius for four hours. In both cases the materials considered are used in partial replacement of shale, which in turn makes the geopolymer bricks and the Incinerated Sewage Sludge Ash bricks a potentially sustainable construction material in the sense that it uses wastes to replace the use of irreplaceable natural resources. The resulting hybrid bricks will be tested for the effect in compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, cold as well as hot water absorption, saturation coefficient, efflorescence, freeze thaw damage, and resonant frequency, all being part of the established quality control procedures in this industry. For the HBS-polymer bricks, the findings indicate that, while the compressive strength, hot as well as cold water absorption and resistance to freeze-thaw damage of hybrid bricks was on par with the control brick without any shale replacement, HBS polymer bricks were much lighter (apparently owing to a better distribution of fine pores and without a commensurate increase in water absorption capacity). The results from the study of the Geo-polymer bricks, Bio-polymer bricks and SSA bricks suggest that they can be a promising solution for the long debated economical building construction with a reduced carbon footprint and firing energy while offering an alternative to landfill disposal of waste.

Book Eco efficient Masonry Bricks and Blocks

Download or read book Eco efficient Masonry Bricks and Blocks written by Fernando Pacheco-Torgal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masonry walls constitute the interface between the building’s interior and the outdoor environment. Masonry walls are traditionally composed of fired-clay bricks (solid or perforated) or blocks (concrete or earth-based), but in the past (and even in the present) they were often associated as needing an extra special thermal and acoustical insulation layer. However, over more recent years investigations on thermal and acoustical features has led to the development of new improved bricks and blocks that no longer need these insulation layers. Traditional masonry units (fired-clay bricks, concrete or earth-based blocks) that don’t offer improved performance in terms of thermal and acoustical insulation are a symbol of a low-technology past, that are far removed from the demands of sustainable construction. This book provides an up-to-date state-of-the-art review on the eco-efficiency of masonry units, particular emphasis is placed on the design, properties, performance, durability and LCA of these materials. Since masonry units are also an excellent way to reuse bulk industrial waste the book will be important in the context of the Revised Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC which states that the minimum reuse and recycling targets for construction and demolition waste (CDW) should be at least 70% by 2020. On the 9th of March 2011 the European Union approved the Regulation (EU) 305/2011, known as the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and it will be enforced after the 1st of July 2013. The future commercialization of construction materials in Europe makes their environmental assessment mandatory meaning that more information related to the environmental performance of building materials is much needed. Provides an authoritative guide to the eco-efficiency of masonry units Examines the reuse of waste materials Covers a range of materials including, clay, cement, earth and pumice

Book Development and Construction of a Recycled Brick Masonry Aggregate Concrete Pavement

Download or read book Development and Construction of a Recycled Brick Masonry Aggregate Concrete Pavement written by Dallas Emil Schwerin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of recycled aggregates in portland cement concrete (PCC) can offer benefits associated with both economy and sustainability. Recycled brick masonry aggregate (RBMA) can be used as a 100% replacement for conventional coarse aggregate in concrete that exhibits acceptable mechanical properties for use in structural and pavement elements (Cavalline, 2012). Recycled brick masonry aggregate concrete (RBMAC) is currently not used in any type of construction in the United States. However, use of RBMAC could become a viable construction strategy as the popularity of sustainable building practices increases. Although some researchers have studied RBMAC in the laboratory, minimal research on full-scale installations has been performed to evaluate the constructability concerns associated with its use, the performance of which is highly influenced by the relatively low unit weight and high absorption of the RBMA. A single-source demolition site was used to provide recycled clay bricks which were crushed and graded into RBMA. Material properties of RBMA from this source were compared to material properties of previously developed RBMA and to the concrete paving specifications of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Preliminary and final RBMAC mixtures were designed for use in a test pavement as part of this study, and laboratory test results were compared to values from previously developed RBMAC mixtures. The RBMAC test pavement, along with a control section of conventional PCC, was constructed within the access roadway of a local industry in order to allow researchers to identify and address concerns related to construction with this material, and to evaluate both early age and long-term performance of RBMAC in a full-scale pavement installation. Due to the novelty of RBMA and the associated risk and expense related to its use in a traditional batch plant, mobile volumetric concrete mixing trucks were used to facilitate construction of the test pavement. Challenges encountered during pre-construction and construction of the test pavement, experience with placing and finishing the RBMAC and control PCC pavement, and the performance of RBMAC in a pavement application are discussed. This study provides the results of both laboratory testing and a full-scale field installation of a new material that stakeholders can consider for use in future sustainable construction applications.
