Book DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR SINGLE CRYSTAL TURBINE BLADES

Download or read book DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR SINGLE CRYSTAL TURBINE BLADES written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbine blades in coal derived syngas systems are subject to oxidation and corrosion due to high steam temperature and pressure. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are developed to address these problems. The emphasis is on prime-reliant design and a better coating architecture, having high temperature and corrosion resistance properties for turbine blades. In Phase I, UES Inc. proposed to develop, characterize and optimize a prime reliant TBC system, having smooth and defect-free NiCoCrAlY bond layer and a defect free oxide sublayer, using a filtered arc technology. Phase I work demonstrated the deposition of highly dense, smooth and defect free NiCoCrAlY bond coat on a single crystal CMSX-4 substrate and the deposition of alpha-alumina and yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) sublayer on top of the bond coat. Isothermal and cyclic oxidation test and pre- and post-characterization of these layers, in Phase I work, (with and without top TBC layer of commercial EB PVD YSZ) revealed significant performance enhancement.

Book Development of Protective Coatings for Columbium Alloy Gas Turbine Blades

Download or read book Development of Protective Coatings for Columbium Alloy Gas Turbine Blades written by Seymour Priceman and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four developmental cycles of candidate selection, screening test and evaluation were performed on coatings for columbium turbine blade airfoils and root sections. Candidate coatings included numerous fused silicide compositions, silicided sintered underlays, and fused silicides plus glass, ceramic, soft metal, and flame sprayed overlays. The first three developmental cycles employed thermogravimetric analysis, isothermal furnace tests, slow cyclic tests, thermal fatigue torch tests, ballistic impact plus furnace oxidation tests, and prestrain plus oxidation tests as screening criteria. Extensive coating and coating processing compatibility studies were carried out with the aim of preventing deleterious reactions between root and airfoil coatings and degradation of the substrate alloy mechanical properties. The program was concluded with a series of advanced simulated environmental tests and mechanical property evaluations.

Book Development of Coatings for Gas Turbines Burning Biomass and Waste Fuels

Download or read book Development of Coatings for Gas Turbines Burning Biomass and Waste Fuels written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, carbon dioxide emission reductions are in progress following the Kyoto Protocol implementation programme to mitigate climate change. More stringent reductions are expected to follow the present programme which ends in 2012. In addition to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the major climate change mitigation policy is the elimination of waste. This project addresses both aspects, by facilitating the use of biomass and waste fuels in the gas turbines of highly efficient, integrated gasification combined cycle electricity generating units. Gases from the gasification of these fuels contain potentially damaging contaminants which, when combusted in gas turbines, will initiate hot corrosion. To resist hot corrosion, but still maximise gas turbine efficiency, the hot components of gas turbines require protective coatings. Five activities in this project required original research to meet the objectives. Firstly, to identify potentially damaging species in gasifier gases, which could remain after hot gas cleaning and, following combustion, initiate hot corrosion along the gas path of the gas turbine. Thermodynamic assessments, using MTDATA software, identified cadmium and lead species that could initiate hot corrosion in the gas turbine. The second research activity, involved Type II hot corrosion tests of the identified species on superalloys and typical commercial coatings. These tests simulated the same corrosion environment as in industrial high temperature gas turbine operation. Test results confirmed the thermodynamic assessments, with hot corrosion being initiated on all items tested, and was worse with lead and/or cadmium additions. The third research activity was to develop novel hot corrosion protective coatings. The approach was to develop the most economic coatings, which would provide comparable, or superior, hot corrosion performance to that provided by well proven commercial coatings already used with fossil fuel firing. From previous research at.

Book Environmental Barrier Coatings

Download or read book Environmental Barrier Coatings written by Kang N. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.
