Book Development of Performance related Specifications for Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Construction

Download or read book Development of Performance related Specifications for Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Construction written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary product of this study was a demonstration performance -related specification (PRS) system for PCC pavement construction. The system is designed to consider three key factors (ie, PCC strength, slab thickness and initial serviceability) in assessing an as-constructed pavement delivered by a contractor and calculating an appropriate reward (bonus/incentive) or penalty (disincentive). Many pavement performance prediction relationships and PCC property prediction equations were evaluated to develop the performance-related aspects of the new system. In addition, a rather intensive experimental laboratory study of PCC material properties was conducted to develop better multi-factor prediction relationships. The demonstration PRS was developed using a computerized spreadsheet program.

Book Performance Related Specifications PRS for Concrete Pavements in Indiana Volume 2

Download or read book Performance Related Specifications PRS for Concrete Pavements in Indiana Volume 2 written by Cole Graveen and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance-Related Specifications (PRS) are specifications that base pavement acceptance and pay adjustment on the projected performance and predicted life-cycle cost (LCC) for a specific pavement. PRS relate measurable quality characteristics with pavement performance through computer simulations that incorporate physical distress models. Previously, work at ERES consultants by Darter and co-workers developed prototype PRS for jointed plain portland cement concrete pavements (PCC) through Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through a series of research projects. However, before this research program began, pavements have not been constructed using these specifications. This report describes the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) experience with developing and implementing the first and second Level 1 PRS projects during the re-construction of a portion of I-465 east of Indianapolis and I-65 north of Clarksville, respectively. This report includes an overview of the concepts behind PRS, the process of developing a Level 1 PRS, lessons learned from implementing the first PRS in the construction of the pavement outside Indianapolis during the summer of 2000, lessons learned from implementing the second PRS in the construction of the pavement outside Clarksville during the summer of 2002, the use of non-destructive testing procedures to obtain measures of pavement quality, sample specifications, and conclusions and recommendations. In general, this specification was well received by both the agency and the contractors. It is believed that lessons learned on these projects will enable future modifications to the development of performance related specifications with the hope that these specifications will enable longer lasting, more cost effective pavements to be constructed.

Book Performance related Specifications for Highway Construction and Rehabilitation

Download or read book Performance related Specifications for Highway Construction and Rehabilitation written by William P. Chamberlin and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1995 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to administrators, including contract and specifications administrators; research, construction, materials, specification, and design engineers; agency project managers and staff; and highway construction contractors. It describes the state of the practice with respect to the development and present status of performance-related specifications (PRS) for highway materials and construction. This report of the Transportation Research Board summarizes the historical events that have prompted U.S. interest in PRS development and describes the underlying concepts. In addition, it describes current practice with regard to PRS implementation and refers to the principal PRS literature with emphasis on performance and cost models. It emphasizes the utility of PRS in providing objective/ rational measures that can be used for special contract conditions, such as incentive or disincentive adjustments.

Book Portland Cement Concrete Pavements Research

Download or read book Portland Cement Concrete Pavements Research written by United States. Federal Highway Administration. Office of Research, Development, and Technology and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the use of PaveSpec 3.0, State and local highway/ transportation agencies can develop performance-related specifications (PRS) and predict the performance of a constructed pavement. In addition, PaveSpec 3.0 can be used as a technology transfer tool to enable both contractors and highway agencies to get a better understanding of what it takes to construct highway performance pavements.

Book Performance Based Specifications Final Report

Download or read book Performance Based Specifications Final Report written by James K. Cable and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal in highway construction and operation has shifted from method based specifications to specifications relating desired performance attributes to materials, mix designs, and construction methods. Shifting from method specifications to performance based specifications can work as an incentive or disincentive for the contractor to improve performance or extend pavement life. This literature search was directed at a review of existing portland cement concrete performance specification development, and the criteria that can effectively measure pavement performance. The criteria identified in the literature include concrete strength, slab thickness, air content, initial smoothness, water-cement ratio, unit weight, and slump. A description of each criterion, along with the advantages, disadvantages, and test methods for each are identified. Also included are the results from a survey that was sent out to various state, federal, and trade agencies. The responses indicated that 53% currently use or are developing a performance based specification program. Of the 47% of agencies that do not use a performance based specification program, over 34% indicated that they would consider a similar program. The most commonly measured characteristics include thickness, strength, smoothness, and air content. Lastly recommendations and conclusions are made regarding other factors that affect pavement performance and a proposed second phase of the research is suggested. The research team suggests that a regional expert task group be formed to identify performance levels and criteria. The results of that effort will guide the research team in the development of new or revised specifications.

Book Development and Implementation of a Performance related Specification for a Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement I 39 90 94 Madison Wisconsin

Download or read book Development and Implementation of a Performance related Specification for a Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement I 39 90 94 Madison Wisconsin written by S. P. Rao and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a Level 1 performance-related specification (PRS) for the construction of a jointed plain concrete (JPC) pavement in the State of Wisconsin. The research entailed a thorough evaluation of the construction quality levels achieved on recent Wisconsin JPC projects and the formulation of a Level 1 PRS using the results of the quality evaluation and defined Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) pavement practices as a basis. Feedback from WisDOT and the contractor indicated that this first PRS implementation in Wisconsin was successful, particularly with respect to the layouts of lots and sublots. Several suggestions were received to improve and streamline the PRS process.

Book Development of a Prototype Performance related Specification

Download or read book Development of a Prototype Performance related Specification written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study continues the development of performance-related specifications (PRS) for concrete pavements. Drawing upon previous work, a prototype PRS was developed that considers the expected life-cycle cost of the as-constructed pavement as the overall measure of quality. The approach calls for measurement of in situ concrete properties and explicitly considers variability and multiple quality characteristics in the determination of pay adjustments. Extensive laboratory testing was conducted to determine material relationships needed in the prototype PRS, and a detailed test plan has been developed for the evaluation of construction variables (eg dowel misalignment) that significantly affect concrete pavement performance but are not currently accounted for in the specification. A computer program, PaveSpec, has been developed for use with the specification in simulation and in generating pay adjustments.
