Childhood obesity may lead to adverse health outcomes in adolescence and adulthood. Regular engagement in physical activity (PA) can reduce the risk of childhood obesity. The establishment of an active lifestyle needs to start in early childhood as PA behavior in the preschool age tracks to childhood and adulthood. To achieve this goal, modifiable determinants of Hong Kong preschoolers'' PA and sedentary behaviors need to be identified. However, measures of such determinants appropriate for Hong Kong preschoolers and their primary caregivers were lacking. Thus, this PhD project focused on the development and validation of culturally- and linguistically-appropriate measures of neighborhood environmental and family factors that may contribute to an active lifestyle in Hong Kong preschoolers. Methods: This project was based on a socio-ecological model of Hong Kong preschoolers'' PA and sedentary behaviors. It included qualitative and quantitative studies. Fifty-six primary caregivers (mainly parents) of Hong Kong Chinese preschoolers participated in the qualitative stage, including an unstructured focus group, individual interviews, cognitive interviews and nominal group technique sessions for the purpose of the development of new scales assessing PA-related parental practices and informal social control, and the adaptation and translation (into Chinese) of seven extant questionnaires of relevant neighborhood variables. The quantitative stage of the project involved the assessment of test-retest reliability and internal consistency of all instruments (n=61); an evaluation of the factorial validity of two newly-developed scales via confirmatory factor analysis (n=394); and, the assessment of the construct validity of the instruments and proposed model of PA. The latter component of the project entailed an analysis of correlates of PA-related parental practices (n=411) and those of preschoolers'' PA and sedentary behaviors (n=164). Results: Two preliminary instruments were developed in the qualitative stage: (1) Physical Activity Parental Practices for Preschoolers - Hong Kong (PAPPP-HK) and (2) PA-related Informal Social Control. Seven extant neighborhood-related questionnaires and two newly-developed scales were tested by cognitive interviews and minor changes were made. All nine instruments showed acceptable to excellent levels of test-retest reliability and internal consistency. The final measurement models for PAPPP-Encouragement consisted of two subscales and that for PAPPP-Discouragement had four subscales. All measurement models showed moderate to good fit to the data. The final measurement model for PA-related Informal Social Control showed acceptable fit and had three subscales. Neighborhood environmental factors were found to be associated with parental practices discouraging PA only, while socio-demographic and family characteristics were significantly correlated with parental practices encouraging and discouraging PA. This study also found that neighborhood, parental and family characteristics contributed to the explanation of preschoolers'' PA and sedentary behaviors. Significance: This study developed culturally- and linguistically-appropriate, reliable and valid measures of family and

Abstract: There has been a growing interest in promoting active transportation as an effective route to address the issues caused by the heavy reliance on motorized modes. Walking, as a unique form among all types of active transportation mode, is highly accessible and easy to be incorporated into every trip. A number of distinct benefits of walking deserve special mention. Among the whole transport system, walking is a fundamental and integral part linking various elements of trip together, irrespective of public or private modes. Besides, walking offers people an opportunity for regular physical activity that contributes to substantial health benefits. In order to identify how built and social environmental attributes influence on walking, four communities in Hong Kong with different physical and/or social characteristics were selected as case study. First hand data was collected by on-site questionnaire survey, together with objective assessments towards neighborhood walkability and condition of socio-economic disadvantage, the influences of physical and social factors on the level of walking were examined. For the study on walking intensity, individual characteristics including gender and income were found to be better predictors for the level of walking intensity. Among environmental determinants, the perceptions of pedestrians towards neighborhood walkability might be particularly important to predict one's intensity of walking activity. Besides, positive association was observed between health condition and the level of walking activity. In terms of the study exploring the concordance between perceived and objective walkability, a moderate concordance between dual environmental measurements was found. The results of the study revealed that pedestrians' perceptions towards neighborhood walkability might be crucial influencing one's propensity and intensity. Book An Exploratory Study on Factors Affecting Hong Kong Children s Behaviour and Attitudes Towards Environmental Conservation

Download or read book An Exploratory Study on Factors Affecting Hong Kong Children s Behaviour and Attitudes Towards Environmental Conservation written by Wing-kei Vicky Wong and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is crucial to provide environmental education to the next generation in order to sustain environmental protection in the long run. Although significant research effort has been dedicated to suggesting immediate actions to protect the environment, few studies have examined the promotion of environmental protection among children, let alone the unique roles of parents and teachers in this education. The current study aims to address this gap in the research by establishing the connection between the environmental concerns of influential parties and behaviour and attitudes towards environmental conservation among local children. It recommends a promotional campaign for the development of environmental education. The study is directed by six objectives: reviewing local children's behaviour and attitudes towards environmental conservation, identifying the measurement scale for environmental behaviour and attitudes, revealing the elements facilitating positive views of environmental issues among the children, and recommending implementable campaign campaigns environmental education policy. Following the data analysis, the results reflect the positive influence of parents and teachers on 14 environmental aspects, where the strongest influence is on minimising disturbance to animals. Additionally, both parents and teachers have their strengths in teaching environmental conduct to children, while the distribution of responsibility would enhance the efficiency of parenting and teaching. This research makes three contributions. First, along with the literature review, the identification of important environmental factors in the local context can be reused in future studies. Second, the study provides a detailed investigation of the importance of parenting and teaching for different environmental aspects in the environmental education of young children. Finally, it makes specific recommendations for parenting and teaching regarding environmental issues to enhance the diffusion of the environmental protection message among children in the early stage.

Book excerpt: "This resource book discusses the economic arguments that could (and could not) be put forth to support the case for investing in the social determinants of health on average and in the reduction in socially determined health inequalities. It provides an overview and introduction into how economists would approach the assessment of the economic motivation to invest in the social determinants of health and socially determined health inequities, including what the major challenges are in this assessment. It illustrates the extent to which an economic argument can be made in favour of investment in 3 major social determinants of health areas: education, social protection, and urban development and infrastructure. It describes whether education policy, social protection, and urban development, housing and transport policy can act as health policy"--

The neighbourhood environment, which could influence large proportions of population for sustained periods of time, has been associated with physical activity in Western countries. Yet, it remains unclear that how the neighbourhood environment in ultra-dense Hong Kong, especially with respect to proximity and availability of recreational facilities, is associated with physical activity of its residents. This study examines the associations between neighbourhood recreational facility, in both perceived and objective measures, and physical activity of residents in Hong Kong. The differences between perceived and objective availability of recreational facilities, and the perceived encouraging or discouraging features of a self-reported recreational facility were also examined. The availability of recreational facilities between high and low socio-economic status neighbourhoods was compared to identify inequalities of recreational resource allocation. A total of 480 participants aged 18-65 years, living in 32 neighbourhoods of different extremes of walkability and socio-economic status, were recruited to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire in which the perceived aspects of neighbourhood recreational facilities were examined, and to wear a motion sensor which objectively measure physical activity for 7 consecutive days. Objective availability of 14 types of recreational facilities, categorized into combinations of indoor or outdoor and public, residential or commercial facilities, were quantified by direct observations. Geographical Information Systems further provided objective data regarding the number of parks, sports centres, sports grounds, playgrounds, swimming pools, bike lanes and pavilions available in the examined neighbourhoods. The objectively-assessed numbers of residential outdoor table tennis courts and public indoor swimming pools, and the presence of tennis courts, pavilions and swimming pools, as well as the perceived presence of bike lanes and swimming pools were positively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. In contrast, the objectively-assessed numbers of playgrounds, and the presence of soccer pitches, squash courts and playgrounds, were negatively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Poor agreements between perceived and objective availability of volleyball courts, soccer pitches, walking trails, weight and cardio-training equipment were observed. In contrast, good agreement between perceived and objective availability of tennis courts was observed. The level of agreement between perceived and objective availability of specific types of recreational facilities was influenced by the types of neighbourhood where participants lived and socio-demographics characteristics, such as age, education level and monthly household income. Perceived encouraging and discouraging features of a regularly-used recreational facility were observed across different domains, including the conditions of changing rooms and toilets, environmental safety, and aesthetics. High socio-economic status neighbourhoods had higher numbers of pavilions and swimming pools, and had higher odds of having sports grounds, swimming pools and tennis courts than low soci
