The ICC, in turn, is part of a larger computer network that includes computers that perform process control and nuclear materials accounting functions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Savannah River Site is installing a multifunctional Pyrochemical Development Laboratory (PDL) to pursue new technology for plutonium recovery. Many future plutonium scrap feed stocks cannot be efficiently processed in SRS facilities using aqueous flow sheets and existing equipment due to poor dissolution behavior or corrosive constituents. Pyrochemical treatment processes will be developed to convert these scraps into viable feedstocks for SRS processing. A technology data base will also be developed for pyrochemical process commonly used to recover plutonium from retired weapon components. The intent of all development programs is to integrate pyrochemical technology with the existing aqueous capabilities at SRS in way that maximizes plutonium recovery, minimize waste generation, and provides an essential contingency capacity for plutonium processing. Five gloveboxes will be provided in the PDL. A stationary, resistance heated furnace will be located in each of two boxes. These furnaces will provide the PDL with the capability to develop flow sheets involving most pyrochemical operations. A third glovebox in the laboratory will be used for plutonium hydriding. Nondestructive analysis (NDA) instrumentation will be installed in a fourth. The furnace, hydriding, and NDA gloveboxes will be provided with high quality argon atmospheres. In order to maintain the purity, the fifth glovebox will serve the primary entrance, exit, and staging area for the glovebox line.

These systems will be delivered to SRP in 1986 and become part of the nuclear material accounting instrumentation at one of SRP's reprocessing facilities. Among the various types of nondestructive assay systems to be implemented are a neutron counter (Los Alamos National Laboratory - LANL), a four-station calorimeter (Mound Laboratories), a waste solution assay system (LANL), two gamma-ray solution concentration assay systems (LLNL), two x-ray fluorescence analysis concentration assay systems (LLNL), and one 2-detector plutonium solids isotopics system (LLNL). Los Alamos also has the responsibility of combining the individual measurement systems into an integrated accountability capability. Each NDA instrument will report results to a central Instrument Control Computer (ICC). Figure 1 illustrates schematically the integrated system with each Laboratory's contribution shown by dotted lines.

Book excerpt: An in-line, plutonium-solution, K-edge absorption densitometer has been developed at Los Alamos and is currently undergoing test and evaluation at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). The first phase of the test and evaluation (off-line instrument calibration and solution assays) was completed, and preparations are under way to install the instrument in-line, as soon as process schedules permit. Calibration data in the design concentration range of 25 to 40 g Pu/L demonstrate routine achievement of densitometry assay precisions of 0.5% or better in 40 min. Plutonium assays at concentrations outside the calibration range were investigated in an effort to define better the limitations of the instrument and address other possible assay situations at SRP. Densitometry precisions obtained for 40-min assays range from 3% to 5 g Pu/L down to 0.4% at 70 g Pu/L. At higher plutonium concentrations, the precision deteriorated due to increasing gamma-ray absorption by the solution. In addition, with actinide concentrations above approximately 100 g/L, the assay accuracy also suffered because of enhanced small-angle scattering effects in the large sample cell. Measurements on mixed U/Pu solutions demonstrated the feasibility of accurate plutonium assays with correction for the large uranium matrix contributions being determined from the measurement data. The 239 24°Pu weight fractions and 241Pu/239Pu and 238Pu/239Pu isotopic ratios can be determined. In a mockup of the in-line solution plumbing system, all assay sequences, error conditions, and interlock criteria were exercised and verified to be working properly.
