Book excerpt: Abstract: Purpose Nuclear Magnetic Resonance field probes provide exciting possibilities for enhancing MR image quality by allowing for calibration of k-space trajectories and/or dynamic measurement of local field changes. The purpose of this study is to design and build field probes, which are easier to manufacture and more flexible to use than existing probes. Methods A new manufacturing method is presented based on light-activated resin to encase the coil assembly and the 1H sample. This method allows for realizing field probes with tightly integrated orthogonal coils, whereby the local resonance frequency of protons can be adjusted during the MR experiment, by applying a DC current to the integrated urn:x-wiley:07403194:media:mrm28444:mrm28444-math-0001-field modification coil. Results The apparent field probe position in a gradient echo experiment was shifted within the field of view by changing its Larmor frequency using an integrated micro-coil with 5.5 windings. The measured frequency modulation induced by the urn:x-wiley:07403194:media:mrm28444:mrm28444-math-0002-field modification coil was 113 Hz/mA. The probe was tested with currents up to 100 mA. The DC current in the local field modification coil did not introduce visible artifacts in the MR images. Furthermore selective off-resonant excitation of the new field probes at 2 kHz above the main RF frequency was demonstrated. Gradient impulse response functions measured with a traditional and proposed probe show similar gradient imperfections. Conclusions The presented approach opens up new possibilities for concurrent field monitoring during MR experiments using standard RF capabilities of clinical scanners

Three probes were evaluated: a high-frequency, wide-band variable mu magnetometer, with a small sensor head for measuring inside enclosures, covering a 10-Hz to 10-MHz frequency range; a sensitive 3-Mhz to 30-MHz magnetic field probe; and a high impedance 400-Hz to 50-MHz electric field probe. These devices were developed to produce improved and more versatile instrumentation for the investigation and evaluation of electromagnetic interference problems. The probes in common use today do not have a constant response over their frequency ranges and require many adjustments and calibrations to make them useful. The probes evaluated use active circuitry to produce a constant response over their operating ranges and, therefore, require little calibration. These probes will be used for measuring and recording broad-band transients and for making narrow-band automated interference measurements. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Committee to Assess the Current Status and Future Direction of High Magnetic Field Science in the United States was convened by the National Research Council in response to a request by the National Science Foundation. This report answers three questions: (1) What is the current state of high-field magnet science, engineering, and technology in the United States, and are there any conspicuous needs to be addressed? (2) What are the current science drivers and which scientific opportunities and challenges can be anticipated over the next ten years? (3) What are the principal existing and planned high magnetic field facilities outside of the United States, what roles have U.S. high field magnet development efforts played in developing those facilities, and what potentials exist for further international collaboration in this area? A magnetic field is produced by an electrical current in a metal coil. This current exerts an expansive force on the coil, and a magnetic field is "high" if it challenges the strength and current-carrying capacity of the materials that create the field. Although lower magnetic fields can be achieved using commercially available magnets, research in the highest achievable fields has been, and will continue to be, most often performed in large research centers that possess the materials and systems know-how for forefront research. Only a few high field centers exist around the world; in the United States, the principal center is the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL). High Magnetic Field Science and Its Application in the United States considers continued support for a centralized high-field facility such as NHFML to be the highest priority. This report contains a recommendation for the funding and siting of several new high field nuclear magnetic resonance magnets at user facilities in different regions of the United States. Continued advancement in high-magnetic field science requires substantial investments in magnets with enhanced capabilities. High Magnetic Field Science and Its Application in the United States contains recommendations for the further development of all-superconducting, hybrid, and higher field pulsed magnets that meet ambitious but achievable goals.

The device had to be small enough to fit inside a mouse cage, had to reproduce an ELF waveform accurately, its dynamic range should cover fields between 1 uT and 5 mT, there must be a simple relationship between field strength and output signal, and signals outside the range of interest should be filtered out. This paper describes the design and testing of such a device.

Book excerpt: A measurement acquisition method that alleviates many shortcomings of traditional measurement systems is presented in this paper. The shortcomings are a finite number of measurement channels, weight penalty associated with measurements, electrical arcing, wire degradations due to wear or chemical decay and the logistics needed to add new sensors. The key to this method is the use of sensors designed as passive inductor-capacitor circuits that produce magnetic field responses. The response attributes correspond to states of physical properties for which the sensors measure. A radio frequency antenna produces a time-varying magnetic field used to power the sensor and receive the magnetic field response of the sensor. An interrogation system for discerning changes in the sensor response is presented herein. Multiple sensors can be interrogated using this method. The method eliminates the need for a data acquisition channel dedicated to each sensor.
