Specifically, the demand for heat is limited to a few locations such as the oil sands operation regions and metropolitan areas. Oil sands processing facilities near Fort McMurray and direct heat provision for different applications in the City of Edmonton are two of these major heat consumers in the province. Currently, this heat is mainly supplied by burning natural gas with significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Geothermal energy may be an alternative heat source for these applications. While the required temperatures are reached within the sedimentary basin underneath Edmonton, wells need to be drilled deep into the granitic basement in the Fort McMurray area. Whereas high enough temperatures can be reached with sufficiently deep wells, in both cases the permeability in these deep sedimentary and granitic rocks is insufficient to produce large enough amounts of hot water. Therefore, these rocks need to be hydraulically stimulated to improve the productivity of the wells without causing premature breakthrough of cold fluid from the injection wells. Such an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is currently the only method that has the potential to provide heat from the earth's crust for the investigated applications. However, so far, no economically operating EGS could be developed in granitic basement rocks, which shows that earlier reservoir engineering concepts were not sufficient and parameters and processes governing the development and operation of EGS are very complex and not well enough understood. Using a variety of numerical methods, this thesis investigates whether EGS can be an alternative low GHG emission heat source for oil sands processing in Fort McMurray and direct heating applications in Edmonton, and how these systems should be designed to make them technically feasible and economically competitive. It was found that the deployment of EGS can significantly reduce GHG emissions and save valuable gas resources at similar costs to burning natural gas only if the fracture network is optimally engineered. The reservoir modeling results suggested that the development of well-connected complex fracture networks between horizontal or deviated wells by multiple stimulation treatments is the most promising concept to achieve these goals. Therefore, the hydraulic stimulation process was studied numerically at the micro and giga scale and based on these results a reservoir engineering concept was proposed for the sedimentary rocks in the Edmonton area and the granitic basement rocks in Fort McMurray. Also, natural factors were identified that promote complex fracture network development in low permeability granitic basement rocks.

While hydrothermal sources are site-specific and have their limitations, EGS can be initiated anywhere on earth. EGS is removing all such obstacles and, in the future, will provide uninterrupted electricity for all. Energy-deficient countries can have surplus electricity; water-stressed countries can have a perennial freshwater supply; and countries can become food-secure and rise above poverty levels. Countries need not depend on energy imports and can independently evolve into carbon neutral or low carbon societies. The contributions made by experts will help researchers and investors to close the energy demand and supply gap in the very near future by tapping the unlimited energy of the Earth. Opportunities available for investors in Turkey are well documented with field, geophysical, and geochemical data and information on the energy generating capacity of the granite intrusive spread over a cumulative area of 6,910 km2 in western Anatolia. With the signing of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) by several countries during the December 2015 CoP 21 (Conference of Parties) summit in Paris, countries are obliged to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing the footprint of renewable energy in the primary source mix. Information provided in this book will lead the way to establishing a clean energy future for millions of people for sustainable development and help to mitigate crises arising due to food, water, and energy shortage issues. Academic and research institutes will benefit to a large extent from the expertise of the top contributors in this book. Book excerpt: The concept of producing energy from hot dry rock (HDR), originally proposed in 1971 at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, contemplated the generation of electric power by injecting water into artificially created fractures in subsurface rock formations with high heat flow. Recognizing the inherent difficulties associated with HDR, the concept of Enhanced Geothermal Systems was proposed. This embraces the idea that the amount of permeability and fluid in geothermal resources varies across a spectrum, with HDR at one end, and conventional hydrothermal systems at the other. This report provides a concept for development of a ''Combined Technologies Project'' with construction and operation of a 6 MW (net) binary-cycle geothermal power plant that uses both the intermediate-depth hydrothermal system at 1,200 to 3,300 feet and a deeper EGS capable system at 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Two production/injection well pairs will be drilled, one couplet for the hydrothermal system, and one for the E GS system. High-pressure injection may be required to drive fluid through the EGS reservoir from the injection to the production well.

Book excerpt: The United States Department of Energy has set long-term national goals for the development of geothermal energy that are significantly accelerated compared to historical development of the resource. To achieve these goals, it is crucial to evaluate the performance of previous and existing efforts to create enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Two recently developed EGS sites are evaluated from the standpoint of geomechanics. These sites have been established in significantly different tectonic regimes: 1. compressional Cooper Basin (Australia), and 2. extensional Soultz-sous-Fôrets (France). Mohr-Coulomb analyses of the stimulation procedures employed at these sites, coupled with borehole observations, indicate that pre-existing fractures play a significant role in the generation of permeability networks. While pre-existing fabric can be exploited to produce successful results for geothermal energy development, such fracture networks may not be omnipresent. For mostly undeformed reservoirs, it may be necessary to create new fractures using processes that merge existing technologies or use concepts borrowed from natural hydrofracture examples (e.g. dyke swarms).
