Book Development of Coherent Detector Technologies for Sub Millimetre Wave Astronomy Observations

Download or read book Development of Coherent Detector Technologies for Sub Millimetre Wave Astronomy Observations written by Boon Kok Tan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis describes the development of receiver technologies for sub-millimetre astronomy instruments, focusing on high performance coherent cryogenic detectors operating close to the superconductor gap frequency. The mixer chip which comprises the SIS devices, fed by a unilateral finline and matching planar circuits was fabricated on 15 micron silicon substrate using the recently developed Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology. This offered broadband IF and RF performance, with fully integrated on-chip planar circuits resulting in an easily reproducible mixer chip and a simple mixer block. An important consequence of this design is that it can be extended to the supra-THz region and making the fabrication of multi-pixel heterodyne arrays feasible. The extension of the operation of major telescopes such as ALMA, APEX and the GLT from single pixel to large format arrays is the subject of extensive research at present time since it will allow fast mapping combined with high resolution of the submillimetre sky. The technology described in this thesis makes a major contribution to this effort.

Book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy 7

Download or read book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy 7 written by Andre HECK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy isthemostancientsciencehumanshavepracticedonEarth. Itisascienceofextremesandoflargenumbers:extremesoftime–fromthe big bang to in?nity –, of distances, of temperatures, of density and masses, ofmagnetic?eld, etc.Itisasciencewhichishighlyvisible, notonlybecause stars and planets are accessible in the sky to the multitude, but also - cause the telescopes themselves are easily distinguishable, usually on top of scenic mountains, and also because their cost usually represent a subst- tialproportionofthenation’sbudgetandofthetaxpayerscontributionsto that budget. As such, astronomy cannot pass unnoticed. It touches on the origins of matter, of the Universe where we live, on life and on our destiny. It touches on philosophy as well as on religion. Astronomy is the direct c- tactofhumankindwithitsoriginsandtheimmensityofuniversalnature. It is indeed a science of observation where experimentation is practically - possible and which is ruled by mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistical analysis and modelling, while o?ering the largest number of veri?cations of the most advanced theories of fundamental physics such as general r- st ativity and gravitation. At the beginning of the 21 century astronomy is clearly a multidisciplinary activity touching on all aspects of science. It is therefore logical that in the past and still now, astronomy has attracted the most famous scientists, be they pure observers, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, experimentalists, and even politicians.

This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first truly comprehensive and most up-to-date handbook available on modern reflector antennas and feed sources for diversified space and ground applications. There has never been such an all-encompassing reflector handbook in print, and no currently available title offers coverage of such recent research developments. The Handbook consists of three volumes. Volume III focuses on the range of reflector antenna applications, including space, terrestrial, and radar. The intent of this book volume is to provide practical applications and design information on reflector antennas used for several communications systems. This book covers recent developments of reflector antennas used for satellite communications, terrestrial communications, and remote sensing applications. New subjects are introduced for the first time, including satellite antennas, Terahertz antennas, PIM, multipaction, corona, deployable mesh reflector antennas, and mechanical aspects of reflector antennas. In addition, this book contains a separate topic on integrated feed assembly for reflector antennas covering analysis, design, fabrication, and test.

Book Physics and Design of Superconducting Detectors Millimetre and Submillimetre Wavelengths

Download or read book Physics and Design of Superconducting Detectors Millimetre and Submillimetre Wavelengths written by Ghassan Yassin and published by . This book was released on with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we investigate the physics and technology of modern superconducting detectors in view of their employment in millimetre and submillimetre receivers that require high performance such as astronomical telescopes. The book presents an in-depth description of the physics of these detectors and also how they can be designed and integrated in the receiver, in the frequency range from 100 GHz to 1.5 THz. Our discussion covers the device physics and the detector chip design that couples the signal to the detector. Both coherent detection using superconducting mixers and total power detection using bolometers are covered.
