Book Development of an Upgrade of the CEBAF Acceleration System

Download or read book Development of an Upgrade of the CEBAF Acceleration System written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for achieving 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. Such energies can be achieved within the existing footprint by fully populating the accelerator with cryomodules capable of providing 3 to 4 times as much voltage as the design value of the existing ones within the same length. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavities capable of operating at gradients above 12 MV/m and Q close to 101°.

Book excerpt: Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for providing 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. Such energies can be achieved within the existing footprint by fully populating the accelerator tunnel with cryomodules capable of twice the operating voltage of the existing ones within the same length. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavities capable of operating at gradients above 12 MV/m and Q(approximately)101°. An R & D program for the development of the cryomodules is under way and will be presented, as well as various options for the upgrade path.

Book excerpt: Long-term plans for the CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for achieving 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. In support of those plans, an Upgrade Cryomodule, capable of providing more than three times the voltage of the original CEBAF cryomodule specification within the same length, is under development. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavities capable of consistently operating at gradients above 12 MV/m and Q(approximately)101°, new frequency tuners with excellent resolution, and cavity control systems.

Book Upgrading the CEBAF Accelerator to 12 GeV

Download or read book Upgrading the CEBAF Accelerator to 12 GeV written by Leigh Harwood and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson Lab is preparing to upgrade its 6 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) to 12 GeV. The doubled energy will significantly extend research reach of the three existing experimental Halls A, B and C, and the upgrade will add scientific capability, with a newly constructed hall, Hall D. Areas of special initial interest are reactions at high xBjorken, GPD's and exotic hybrid mesons. The present linacs will have their acceleration roughly doubled through the addition of 10 new cryomodules which will perform at {approx}5 times the original specification for CEBAF. The cryogenics plant will be roughly doubled and new rf systems will be installed for the new cryomodules. The beam transport system will strongly leverage existing hardware but must be enhanced with new power supplies, one new recirculation arc, and a beamline to the new Hall D.A brief description of the scope for the various accelerator subsystems will be given as well as the status of the project as a whole.

Book Upgrading CEBAF to 12 GeV

Book excerpt: The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) is proposing to upgrade its (almost equal to)6 GeV cw electron accelerator (CEBAF) to 12 GeV with the purpose of extending its reach in exploring the nature hadronic matter, including the explanation for quark confinement. A plan has been developed that carefully balances cost and risk. TJNAF plans to do the upgrade without change to most of the accelerator components. The core of the upgrade is the addition of ten new 100 MV cryomodules and their supporting rf and cryogenics systems. A new experimental hall, devoted to the quark confinement investigation, will be placed so that the beam transits one of the linacs 6 times (vs 5 times for the other linac). Upgrades to the beam transport system will be required. No new developments in beam diagnostics appear to be required. Beam emittances are degraded by synchrotron radiation but meet the needs of the research program. This paper discusses the issues listed above plus requirements for all systems and developmental opportunities presented by the project.

Book New RF Control System for the 12 GeV Energy Upgrade of the CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book New RF Control System for the 12 GeV Energy Upgrade of the CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 14002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab presently consists of 50 MeV injector, two anti-parallel superconducting linacs and two arcs for transporting beam between the linacs. By the mid-1990s, the accelerator was providing electrons up to 5.75 GeV. The 12 GeV Upgrade is a major accelerator project aimed at doubling the energy by adding 10 (five per linac) new high gradient cryomodules, each providing 100 MV of field. The new cryomodule will consist of eight 7-cell superconducting cavities operating at an average accelerating gradient of 19.5 MV/m and with an external Q=3.2 x 10^7. The high gradient, very high quality factor and large Lorentz detuning coefficient (KL up to 4) pose significant challenges beyond what the present analog low level RF (LLRF) control systems can handle reliably; therefore, a new digital LLRF control system has been developed. The main highlights of the new RF Control system include: a RF front-end with low temperature drift and good linearity, a large FPGA.

Book High Gradient Operation with the CEBAF Upgrade RF Control System

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab is presently a 6 GeV five pass electron accelerator consisting of two superconducting linacs joined by independent magnetic transport arcs. Energy will be upgraded to 12 GeV with the addition of 10 new high gradient cryomodules (17+ MV/m). The higher gradients pose significant challenges beyond what the present analog low level RF (LLRF) control systems can handle reliably; therefore, a new LLRF control system is needed. A prototype system has been developed incorporating a large FPGA and using digital down and up conversion to minimize the need for analog components. The new system is more flexible and less susceptible to drifts and component nonlinearities. Because resonance control is critical to reach high gradients quickly, the new cryomodules will include a piezoelectric tuner for each cavity, and the LLRF controls must incorporate both feedback and feed-forward methods to achieve optimal resonance control performance. This paper discusses development of the new RF system, system performance for phase and amplitude stability and resonance control under Lorentz detuning measured during recent tests on a prototype cryomodule.

Book Overview of CEBAF Operations and SRF related Activities at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Overview of CEBAF Operations and SRF related Activities at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Lab nuclear physics accelerator, CEBAF, continues to reliably deliver polarized CW electron beams with energy in the range of 1--5.5 GeV. The 330 installed 1,500 MHz SRF cavity systems perform solidly, contributing a small fraction of the machine downtime. The 5-pass energy capability has been pushed to near 6 GeV by application of in situ helium processing to almost all of the cavities. New operational tools have been developed and deployed which allow the operators to quickly reconfigure the linacs for optimal performance under various energy and beamloading conditions. Plans are being developed for upgrading CEBAF to 12 GeV. This requires a new cryomodule design and use of 5.5 recirculations for the top energy. Subsystem development is underway on a 7-cell cavity, new zero-backlash tuner, improved magnetic shielding, and an arc-free waveguide rf feed, as well as a new cryomodule mechanical system. Significant facility changes have been made in preparation for this work. A new rf control system will also be required. In addition to the successful nuclear physics program, the JLab FEL produced a world-record 1.7 kW CW in the infrared. An upgrade program is ready to begin. Significant efforts have also been directed in support of APT and RIA, as well as collaborations related to cavity fabrication and processing techniques.

Book Superconducting Cavity Development for the CEBAF Upgrade

Download or read book Superconducting Cavity Development for the CEBAF Upgrade written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for achieving 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. In support of these plans, an Upgrade Cryomodule, capable of providing more than twice the operating voltage of the existing CEBAF modules within the same length, is being developed. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavities capable of consistently operating at gradients above 12 MV/m and Q (approximately) 101°. We have engaged in a complete review of all the processes and procedures involved in the fabrication and assembly of cavities, and are modifying our chemical processing, cleaning, and assembly facilities. While we have retained the cell shape of existing CEBAF cavities, the new superconducting structure will be substantially different in several respects, such as the higher-order-modes damping and the fundamental power coupling systems. Design features and experimental results will be presented.

Book Frequency Tuning of the CEBAF Upgrade Cavities

Download or read book Frequency Tuning of the CEBAF Upgrade Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab calls for achieving 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. In support of these plans, an Upgrade Cryomodule capable of providing more than twice the voltage of the existing ones is under development. One requirement is to operate the superconducting cavities, which are 40% longer than existing ones, at 2.5 times the original design gradient with the same amount of rf power. This puts stringent requirements on the accuracy of the frequency tuner: range of 400 kHz and resolution of 1 Hz. A new tuner design to meet these requirements is under development. This system avoids problem areas of previous designs by holding to the principles of not placing moving parts in the vacuum and/or low temperature space, and of having all drive components readily accessible for maintenance and replacement without cryomodule warm-up.

Book Introduction to Accelerator Dynamics

Download or read book Introduction to Accelerator Dynamics written by Stephen Peggs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a particle accelerator work? The most direct and intuitive answer focuses on the dynamics of single particles as they travel through an accelerator. Particle accelerators are becoming ever more sophisticated and diverse, from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to multi-MW linear accelerators and small medical synchrotrons. This self-contained book presents a pedagogical account of the important field of accelerator physics, which has grown rapidly since its inception in the latter half of the last century. Key topics covered include the physics of particle acceleration, collision and beam dynamics, and the engineering considerations intrinsic to the effective construction and operation of particle accelerators. By drawing direct connections between accelerator technology and the parallel development of computational capability, this book offers an accessible introduction to this exciting field at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, accelerator scientists, and engineers.

Book UPGRADING THE CEBAF INJECTOR WITH A NEW BOOSTER HIGHER VOLTAGE GUN AND HIGHER FINAL ENERGY

Download or read book UPGRADING THE CEBAF INJECTOR WITH A NEW BOOSTER HIGHER VOLTAGE GUN AND HIGHER FINAL ENERGY written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator at Jefferson Lab will be upgraded from 6 GeV to 12 GeV in the next few years. To meet the requirement of the new machine and to take the opportunity to improve the beam quality, the CEBAF injector will be upgraded with a higher voltage gun, a new booster, and a new accelerating RF module. The CEBAF injector creates and accelerates three beams at different currents simultaneously. The beams are interleaved, each at one third of the RF frequency, traveling through the same beam line. The higher voltage gun will lower the space charge effects. The new booster with optimized beam dynamics will complete the bunching process and provide initial acceleration matched to the new gun voltage. Using our latest SRF design, the new booster has significantly lower x/y coupling effects that should improve our beam setup and operation for the highly sensitive parity experiments scheduled for the CEBAF's future. Finally, the new accelerating RF module will roughly double the injector final energy to match the rest of the 12 GeV accelerator. In this paper we will provide more detail about this upgrade.

Book COMMISSIONING AND OPERATION OF THE CEBAF 100 MV CRYOMODULES

Download or read book COMMISSIONING AND OPERATION OF THE CEBAF 100 MV CRYOMODULES written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) energy upgrade from 6 GeV to 12 GeV includes the installation of ten new 100 MV cryomodules and RF systems. The superconducting RF cavities are designed to operate CW at a maximum accelerating gradient of 19.3 MV/m. To support the higher gradients and higher Q{sub L} (≈ 3 x 107), a new RF system has been developed and is being installed to power and control the cavities. The RF system employs digital control and 13 kW klystrons. Recently, two of these cryomodules and associated RF hardware and software have been installed and commissioned in the CEBAF accelerator. Electrons at linac currents up to 540?A have been successfully accelerated and used for nuclear physics experiments. This paper reports on the commissioning and operation of the RF system and cryomodules.
