Book Reducing Problems of the Public in an Oil Spill S Case Study of the NEPCO 140 Incident the St Lawrence River June 1976

Download or read book Reducing Problems of the Public in an Oil Spill S Case Study of the NEPCO 140 Incident the St Lawrence River June 1976 written by John T. Omohundro and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methodology sociologists have developed for natural disaster research is applied to a large pollution event. Questionnaires, interviews, and documentary fieldwork in the riparian communities on the U.S. side of the St. Lawrence River between Mason's Point, Jefferson County, New York, and Massena, St. Lawrence County, New York, provide the data. Conditions before the pollution event are reviewed for their influence on the emergency behavior of citizens. The public's immediate reaction to the spill, their alert and self-protective measures, their search for organization and information, their evaluation of the work of the pollution contractors and Coast Guard, and their evaluation of the effects of the spill are analysed through narrative and simple statistical procedures. The report concludes that the area residents' planning for and response to a massive river pollution even needs improvement and that the Coast Guard's handling of public problems in a pollution event can also be improved. Recommendations are made which could be applicable to Coast Guard public relations and spill planning on the St. Lawrence River as well as other water bodies. (Author).

Book Computer Mapping of St Lawrence Seaway for Oil Spill and Vessel Traffic Control

Download or read book Computer Mapping of St Lawrence Seaway for Oil Spill and Vessel Traffic Control written by Clay E. Gaetje and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A graphical interface is developed for referencing to rivers and retrieving river information. The graphics interface developed works on IBM PC compatible micro-computers. The interface allows customization of display and access to a variety of functions through an easy to use menu system. This graphical information retrieval program will be used in traffic and oil spill control of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The base maps can be used in future automation of river related operations."--Abstract (page i).

Book Simulation of Oil Slick Transport in Great Lakes Connecting Channels Volume 3 User s Manual for the Lake River Oil Spill Simulation Model

Download or read book Simulation of Oil Slick Transport in Great Lakes Connecting Channels Volume 3 User s Manual for the Lake River Oil Spill Simulation Model written by Hung T. Shen and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, two computer models named as ROSS and LROSS are developed for simulating oil slick transport in rivers and lakes, respectively. The oil slick transformation processes considered in these models include advection, spreading, evaporation and dissolution. These models can be used for slicks of any shape originated from instantaneous or continuous spills in rivers and lakes with or without ice covers. Although developed for the need of the connecting channels in the upper Great Lakes, including the Detroit RIver, Lake St. Clair, St, Clair River, and St. Marys River, these models are site independent and can be used to others rivers and lakes. The programs are written in FORTRAN language to be compatible with FORTRAN77 compiler. The models are designed to be used on both mainframe and microcomputers. Keywords: Ice regions. (KR).
