Book Development of a Thermal Vacuum Chamber for Propulsion System Testing

Download or read book Development of a Thermal Vacuum Chamber for Propulsion System Testing written by Mona Issa and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of small satellites, including CubeSats, and their widespread use in industry and educational institutions, testing facilities are required to accommodate, in complexity, size, and cost, the miniaturisation of spacecraft. Conducting thermal-vacuum tests on Electric Propulsion Systems used in small satellites poses the limitation of needing a path for the thruster beam to safely reach its target, thus complicating the process of designing a thermal shroud that could completely enclose the thruster. This project comprised the evaluation of a TVC setup with an open thermal shroud through experimental testing and numerical analysis. Following this evaluation an improved design of a thermal shroud for testing electric thrusters was developed and validated through numerical and experimental methods. The final design produced satisfactory results, where the thermal shroud, and in turn the test satellite were able to reach desired temperatures when the satellite was dissipating low or no heat. However, as the heat dissipated from the satellite was raised the cooling performance of the thermal shroud was less effective. Nevertheless with the improved shroud design the major drawbacks of the setup were eliminated, such as a large temperature jump at the interface between the shroud and the thermal plate, and temperature range achievable was improved.

Book Development of a Thermal Vacuum System for Application in Space Hardware Environmental Testing

Download or read book Development of a Thermal Vacuum System for Application in Space Hardware Environmental Testing written by Daniel Thomas Schwendtner and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2001 the Space Science and Engineering Lab (SSEL) at Montana State University has designed and built a variety of space hardware, as well as developed the facilities necessary for environmental testing of flight hardware. In late 2005, the SSEL began developing a system to simulate the vacuum environment of near-space which would allow for rudimentary outgassing testing as well as thermal testing of electronics and spacecraft components. To truly test hardware and validate hardware analysis and design, the ability to cycle between the expected temperature extremes in a vacuum environment was essential. The usage and operation of thermal vacuum systems was investigated, requirements for a thermal vacuum system were defined, and possible design options were considered. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to predict the heat load in Watts on the system when a 40 kg nanosatellite (50 cm x 50 cm x 60 cm) was cycled between -40°C and +80°C at rates of temperature change from 1°C/min to 5°C/min. Additional research, analysis, and design was performed on a thermal shroud surrounding the same nanosatellite and operating under identical conditions. Radiation heat transfer between the satellite on the shroud's inside and the vacuum chamber on the shroud's outside was calculated using the radiation network approach. The LU decomposition method was used to solve the resulting set of simultaneous equations. From the results, a design was selected for the system base plate on which the nanosatellite rested, with the capability of sinking or sourcing 833 W of heat power. Similarly, the thermal shroud was designed to sink or source up to 704 W through the shroud body, and up to 229 W through the shroud top. Testing was performed to validate both the FEA model and the physical hardware. Temperature measurements were taken during system testing to validate the design, and as a means to compare the FEA model of the base plate and the radiation heat transfer calculations with the performance of the system hardware. The results indicated that the system functioned as designed, that it met the design requirements, and that it was capable of completely and safely testing satellites and other space hardware.

Book COMMISSIONING AND TESTING OF A NEW DUSTY THERMAL VACUUM CHAMBER

Download or read book COMMISSIONING AND TESTING OF A NEW DUSTY THERMAL VACUUM CHAMBER written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : The Dusty Thermal Vacuum Chamber (DTVAC) is a new facility purchased by the Planetary Surface Technology Development Lab (PSTDL) that will be used to test the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of extraplanetary devices and systems. With the use of vacuum pumps and simulated regolith, the DTVAC can create extraplanetary environments such as those found on the Moon and Mars. This report details the actions that were taken to prepare the DTVAC for TRL testing, including the development of a Data Acquisition Center (DAC) and test fixtures, along with the findings of baseline tests that were performed to understand the behavior of the DTVAC. In the future, the DTVAC will be used to test devices designed for use in the lunar polar regions with the help of the PSTDL icy regolith creation facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various facets of thermal testing of space vehicles in cold vacuum chambers, with and without solar simulation, are discussed. Emphasis is on thermal modeling of spacecraft. Thermal modeling is discussed for the case of simultaneous preservation of temperature, material and surface properties. The following specific items are treated: a criterion for the application of isothermal modeling is developed and illustrated with experimental data, rules for nonisothermal modeling are discussed and illustrated with experimental results, the effect of internal convection is calculated and modeling rules are developed, the effect of internal radiation is discussed and the relative importance illustrated theoretically, and a criterion is developed for the degree of intensity nonuniformity for a solar simulator in terms of desired temperature accuracy.
