Book excerpt: A vorticity, stream function approach has resulted in a formulation and numerical algorithm for the two-dimensional viscous sloshing problem. A key feature of the formulation is the use of a coordinate transformation that maps the fluid body into a fixed geometric shape. The formulation also removes an initial singularity from the governing equations that would otherwise cause the numerical method to diverge. An experimental test rig has been designed and built to study the interaction of the sloshing fluid and spinning structure. The test rig has been instrumented to monitor the motion of several rotating configurations. In addition, a computer simulation model of the test rig is presently under development.
