Book Transitional Boundary Layers in Aeronautics

Download or read book Transitional Boundary Layers in Aeronautics written by R. A. W. M. Henkes and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1996 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. The book contains the proceedings of the Colloquium Transitional Boundary Layers in Aeroautics, as organized by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences on 6-8 December 1995 in Amsterdam. In the external aerodynamics of aircraft, the thin boundary layer along the surface plays an important role. To a large extent, the boundary layer determines the drag of the aircraft. A better knowledge of the laminar-turbulent transition process within the boundary layer may provide technical possibilities for transition control. In this way transition can be postponed, leading to a reduction of the total drag and consequently of the fuel consumption. It is generally recognized that transition belongs to the most difficult problems in fuel mechanics. Fourteen invited papers give an overview of the state-of-the-art of transition phenomena in boundary layers along aircraft surfaces. The emphasis is on the scientific aspects of transition, but resea

Download or read book F 15b Flight Test Fixture 2 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA Dryden Flight Research Center has developed a second-generation flight test fixture for use as a generic test bed for aerodynamic and fluid mechanics research. The Flight Test Fixture 2 (FTF-2) is a low-aspect-ratio vertical fin-like shape that is mounted on the centerline of the F-I5B lower fuselage. The fixture is designed for flight research at Mach numbers to a maximum of 2.0. The FTF-2 is a composite structure with a modular configuration and removable components for functional flexibility. This report documents the flow environment of the fixture, such as surface pressure distributions and boundary-layer profiles, throughout a matrix of conditions within the F-15B/FTF-2 flight envelope. Environmental conditions within the fixture are presented to assist in the design and testing of future avionics and instrumentation. The intent of this document is to serve as a user's guide and assist in the development of future flight experiments that use the FTF-2 as a test bed. Additional information enclosed in the appendices has been included to assist with more detailed analyses, if required. Richwine, David M. Armstrong Flight Research Center...

Book Flight Evaluation of Ground Effect on Several Low aspect ratio Airplanes

Download or read book Flight Evaluation of Ground Effect on Several Low aspect ratio Airplanes written by Paul A. Baker and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A constant-angle-of-attack-approach technique was used to measure ground effect on several low -aspect-ratio aircraft. The flight results were compared with results from constant -altitude flybys, wind-tunnel studies, and theoretical prediction data. It was found that the constantangle-of-attack technique provided data that were consistent with data obtained from constant-altitude flybys and required fewer runs to obtain the same amount of data. The test results from an F5D-1 airplane modified with an ogee wing, a prototype F5D-1 airplane, two XB-70 airplanes, and an F-104A airplane indicate that theory and wind-tunnel results adequately predict the trends caused by ground effect as a function of height and aspect ratio. However, the magnitude of these predictions did not always agree with the flightmeasured results. In addition, there was consistent evidence that the aircraft encountered ground effect at a height above one wing span.
