Download or read book Design of Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders Made Continuous written by R. G. Oesterle and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1989 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents results of a study to determine time-dependent behavior and relevant design criteria for simple-span precast, prestressed bridge girders made continuous. A questionnaire was used to determine current practice. Creep and shrinkage tests of steam-cured concrete loaded at an early age were made. Computer simulations were used to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior and variation in design parameters on the effective continuity for live load plus impact. The findings suggest that positive moment connections in the diaphragms at the piers are not required and provide no structural advantages. The findings also suggest that effective continuity for live load plus impact can vary from 0 to 100% dependent on the design parameters and timing of construction. Computer analyses were also used to determine an upper limit for the amount of negative moment reinforcement over the supports to insure full moment redistribution and attainment of maximum bridge strength. New computer programs were developed for simplified analysis to determine time-dependent effects and service moments. Recommendations for design procedures were presented and design examples given.

Book Improvement of Continuity Connection Over Fixed Piers

Download or read book Improvement of Continuity Connection Over Fixed Piers written by M. Ala Saadeghvaziri and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve structural efficiency of multi-span simply supported bridges, partial and/or full continuity is provided through cast- in-place concrete diaphragms and decks. These bridges, known as Simple-Span Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders Made Continuous, are continuous for live loads. This continuity connection is also beneficial from maintenance point of view by eliminating open joints. However, continuity connections also have their own structural, construction, and maintenance shortcomings. Development of positive moments and diaphragm cracking at the internal pier due to time dependent effects of prestressing is a major structural problem that also affects bridge durability and esthetics. Another issue is that due to reinforcement congestion joint construction is time consuming and thus expensive. Furthermore, the degree of continuity varies depending on structural and construction conditions. These problems are common to various design details used by many states in the US.

Book Jointless Bridge Decks

Download or read book Jointless Bridge Decks written by Paul Zia and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major focus of this research was to validate the concept of connecting two adjacent simple-span girders with a link slab to form a jointless bridge deck so as to eliminate the standard deck joint between the girders. Laboratory tests were conducted on two large-scale specimens to study the performance of the link slab and the girders. The test results indicated that the contribution of link slab to structural continuity is negligible since the stiffness of the link slab is much less than that of the beams with composite decks. Therefore the beams can be treated as simply supported structures without considering the link slab. Furthermore, the stresses in the link slab are controlled primarily by the predominant bending effect due to the end rotations of the beams rather than the axial load effect. A simplified method of analysis is proposed in which the end rotations of the two adjacent girders under a given loading are determined first. Then the end rotations are imposed on the ends of the link slab and the induced moment in the link slab is thus calculated. A design guideline for the link slab is also proposed and illustrated by a design example. The reinforcement for the link slab is designed to control the crack width in the link slab according to the AASHTO criterion.
