Book Effect of Peripherally Presented Visual Signals on Pilot Performance During Flight Simulation

Download or read book Effect of Peripherally Presented Visual Signals on Pilot Performance During Flight Simulation written by John M. Bermudez and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent theoretical developments have stimulated interest in the development and testing of peripheral vision displays which could be used to monitor the control of aircraft attitude. This study investigated the ability of pilots to attend to peripherally presented attitude information via LED displays while simultaneously engaging in foveal processing of an instrument array during a complex maneuver in flight simulator. Twenty-four pilots were divided into two groups of twelve. One group performed vertical S maneuvers using an LED display that indicated an out-of-tolerance condition in compass heading (steady LED). The second group used an LED that provided both out-of-tolerance information and rate-of-error information (strobe LED). All pilots were pre-trained to criterion. Both groups performed under each of three display conditions: Normal (standard round compass dial), Redundant (dial and LED), and Peripheral (LEDs-only). There were no statistically significant differences between the steady LED display and the strobing LED display. Overall, the results suggest that peripheral displays are at least as effective as compass dials for monitoring purposes, and such displays might prove useful as adjunct training aids with the potential for improving safety.

Book A Preliminary Flight Evaluation of the Peripheral Vision Display Using the NT 33A Aircraft

Download or read book A Preliminary Flight Evaluation of the Peripheral Vision Display Using the NT 33A Aircraft written by L. Knotts and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malcolm Horizon, a Peripheral Vision Display (PVD), was installed in the NT-33A variable stability research aircraft. The display provided the evaluation pilot with a gyro stabilized horizon line of red laser light. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of the PVD on pilot workload. Workload was inferred from performance on a secondary task, in this case, the Sternberg task generated by the Workload Assessment Device (WAD). The primary piloting task required maintenance of airspeed, altitude, and angle of bank during instrument flight conditions. Nine NT-33A flights were flown by two evaluation pilots. Presence of the PVD reduced the WAD reaction times of one of the pilots. The reaction times of the other pilot showed mixed results. In-flight data and the pilots subjective comments about the display are discussed. (Author).

Book Peripheral Vision Displays

Download or read book Peripheral Vision Displays written by Leroy L. Vallerie and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A laboratory study was conducted to determine the relative effectiveness of various concepts for the display of information in the periphery. Two commercially available display systems were investigated in conjunction with other concepts involving the use of flicker to encode airspeed signals and differential brightness to enhance the discriminability of input signals. Displays were designed to present tracking information in three control dimensions; viz., pitch, roll and airspeed. An adaptive loop simulator was employed to evaluate operator performance. The results of the study clearly indicated that effective control can be exercised using peripheral displays employing changes in motion as the primary encoding stimulus. A higher level of performance was achieved with one system which contained a single display for presenting integrated pitch and roll signals. The addition of airspeed was found to degrade performance in pitch and roll under all display conditions. Performance could not be enhanced by means of differential brightness. Further evidence was provided for the use of motion as a very effective means for encoding displays designed for viewing in the periphery."--Abstract.

Book Development of a Synthetic Vision System for General Aviation

Download or read book Development of a Synthetic Vision System for General Aviation written by Jason Christopher Wenger and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight test aircraft was instrumented and outfitted with the Synthetic Flight Bag system. A ground simulator was also created for the purpose of training prior to flight test. VFR and IFR pilots participated in the study, and were evaluated on flight technical errors, workload, and eye movement.
