Book Zoning and Property Rights 2nd edition

Download or read book Zoning and Property Rights 2nd edition written by Lawrence Wai-chung Lai and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author combines the unique multidisciplinary backgrounds of an academic, a political scientist, a lawyer and an urban planner to provide the reader with a novel and challenging discussion about the economic nature of land use zoning. Besides establishing a coherent framework for zoning based on the Coasian property rights paradigm, the book offers the reader several up-to-date case studies, including the government role in assigning exclusive property rights via marine fish culture zoning in Hong Kong. The observations provided in the case studies make a valuable contribution to the reader's knowledge of both the effects of zoning systems and the value of the property rights framework for analysis. They also have important implications for future town planning exercises. Lawrence Lai has been a Lecturer in economics in the Department of Surveying at the University of Hong Kong since 1989. His research interests are property rights analyses in respect of politics, urban planning and environment. This book will be of value to students working in a wide range of subjects, including the building environment and economics, as well as property professionals and environmental planners.

Download or read book Taking Land written by Tsuyoshi Kotaka and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-01-31 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific region with its rapid urbanization has generated an immediate need for both land use control and compulsory purchase by national and local governments. This book takes a comparative look at land use laws in ten Asia-Pacific countries (Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand) as well as in the United States. A land use scholar from each country describes and analyzes compulsory land acquisition and the means through which property owners can seek compensation when government regulations or policies become so burdensome that they approach the effect of compulsory purchase. The book's major themes are land use control and eminent domain (compulsory purchase). Contributors examine land use control by focusing on land ownership, statutory framework, land use plans and planning, zoning, building regulations, courts and common law, and regulatory taking among the eleven countries. Sections on eminent domain cover the right of government to take or reclaim private property. General topics discussed include the source of authority (often a country's constitution), the public purpose and the extent of power, compensation, due process, the importance of plans, the effect of a "colonial" legal system, and the accommodation of indigenous peoples' land rights. With the publication of this volume, legal scholars and practicing land use lawyers will be able to analyze and compare for the first time the individual legal approaches of developed and developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Contributors: David L. Callies, Li-Fu Chen, Anton Cooray, Glenys Godlovitch, Tsuyoshi Kotaka, Murray J. Raff, William J. M. Ricquier, Eathipol Srisawaluck, Won Woo Suh, Grace Xavier, Zhen Xian Bin.

Book Green Urbanism Down Under

Download or read book Green Urbanism Down Under written by Timothy Beatley and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this immensely practical book, Timothy Beatley sets out to answer a simple question: what can Americans learn from Australians about “greening” city life? Green Urbanism Down Under reports on the current state of “sustainability practice” in Australia and the many lessons that U.S. residents can learn from the best Australian programs and initiatives. Australia is similar to the United States in many ways, especially in its “energy footprint.” For example, Australia’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions are second only to those of the United States. A similar percentage of its residents live in cities (85 percent in Australia vs. 80 percent in the United States). And it suffers from parallel problems of air and water pollution, a national dependence on automobiles, and high fossil fuel consumption. Still, after traveling throughout Australia, Beatley finds that there are myriad creative responses to these problems—and that they offer instructive examples for the United States. Green Urbanism Down Under is a very readable collection of solutions. Although many of these innovative solutions are little-known outside Australia, they all present practical possibilities for U.S. cities. Beatley describes “green transport” projects, “city farms,” renewable energy plans, green living programs, and much more. He considers a host of public policy initiatives and scrutinizes regional and state planning efforts for answers. In closing, he shares his impressions about how Australian results might be applied to U.S. problems. This is a unique book: hopeful, constructive, and filled with ideas that have been proven to work. It is a “must read” for anyone who cares about the future of American cities.
