Book Industrial Design Optimization of Small and Large Size Axial Turbines

Download or read book Industrial Design Optimization of Small and Large Size Axial Turbines written by Aristide Massardo and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the possibility of integrating optimization techniques with the design and analysis codes normally utilized in the industrial turbine design works. The mathematical minimization procedure presented by the Authors in previous works is coupled here with industrial design codes of multistage axial flow turbines (small and large size) utilized by two Italian Companies. The new industrial optimization procedures allow increases in the efficiency of the turbines to be obtained without the need for modifications in the industrial technology normally utilized to build the machines. The assumed initial turbine design is generally coincident with the conventional -- non mathematically optimized -- industrial project. In all cases the optimization is achieved by utilizing the blade profiles or "Masters" of the Companies. The results obtained for the optimization of multistage turbines are presented; the advantages concerning the design time and the usefulness of the procedures are discussed.

Book Stress Analysis and Aerodynamic Optimization of Small scale Compressed Air Turbines

Download or read book Stress Analysis and Aerodynamic Optimization of Small scale Compressed Air Turbines written by Ahmed Mahmood Abdullah Daabo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to enhance the performance of the solar heater, consisting of parabolic dish concentrator and thermal receiver, as well as the expander, Small Scale Turbines SSTs. Using an advance ray tracing technique, OptisWorks software, both; a small scale parabolic dish concentrator and thermal cavity receiver were developed and optically enhanced. Simultaneously, small scale axial and radial turbines were developed using meanline approach and 3D CFD modelling using ANSYS CFX software. Then, the stator and the rotor of the SSRT were parametrized using two optimization techniques of multi-objective Genetic Algorithm optimization. To examine the SSRT mechanical design reliability, finite element analysis was utilised to determine the values and the locations of each; stresses, deflection and minimum allowed cycle number for the rotor. Consequently, to reduce the Von Mises stresses and deflections and increase the minimum number of cycles on both the rotor shaft and blades, multidisciplinary optimization was conducted to ensure better structural performance without influencing its aerodynamic performance. Comparing numerical and experimental, results showed that the maximum deviation in predicting the compressed air outlet temperature for the thermal receiver was less than 5%. Also, the deviation in SSRT efficiency and power output were about 16% and 14% respectively.

Book Micro turbo expander design for small scale ORC

Download or read book Micro turbo expander design for small scale ORC written by Lorenzo Talluri and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tesla expander was first developed by N. Tesla at the beginning of the 20th century. In recent years, due to the increasing appeal towards micro power generation and energy recovery from wasted flows, this cost effective expander technology rose a renovated interest. In the present study, a 2D numerical model is realized and a design procedure of a Tesla turbine for ORC applications is proposed. A throughout optimization method is developed by evaluating the losses of each component. The 2D model results are further exploited through the development of 3D computational investigation, which allows an accurate comprehension of the flow characteristics. Finally, two prototypes are designed, realized and tested. The former one is designed to work with air as working fluid. The second prototype is designed to work with organic fluids. The achieved experimental results confirmed the validity and the large potential applicative chances of this emerging technology in the field of micro sizes, low inlet temperature and low expansion ratios.

Book Modelling Axial Turbomachinery for Compressed Air Energy Storage

Download or read book Modelling Axial Turbomachinery for Compressed Air Energy Storage written by Jorge Gonzalez-Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change and negative environmental effects from a human's life style have ignited the search for grid-scale electricity production from renewable energy sources. Significant advances with respect to renewable energy conversion into electricity has been achieved in recent years. However, their integration with the electrical grid is still an unsolved problem because the natural intermittency associated with them. Grid-scale energy storage can be the solution to the intermittency problem; of all the types or storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES) is one of the most promising potential solutions to effectively integrate renewable energies to the grid. CAES consists in compressing air during times when the electricity production is larger than the demand. This compressed air is stored in a huge reservoir; it is then used during peak demand times to run gas turbines which are connected to power generators. Literature about steady state CAES is widely available; topics such as system efficiency, fuel free CAES, and reservoir sizing being arguably the most commonly published. However, there are very few works about dynamic state of a CAES system; and there are next to no publications regarding the transient modelling of the turbomachinery for CAES. This thesis develops two independent dynamic models of axial turbomachines for CAES systems; one for a compressor and one for a turbine. These models should be able to represent the behavior of the machines, as well as easily connect with the rest of the components of the system. For these reasons, the models are developed in the SIMULINKʼ environment, which is a tool commonly used for electrical modelling. The models use the time domain, and are based on compressor and turbine performance maps, which make them representative, and let them require a short simulation time. The objective of the simulations is to see how the models behave with regards to power inefficiency, part-load operation; and the effects on the complete operation caused by the system inertias. The models can replicate the operation of any axial turbomachine provided the respective map, and can be also used with centrifugal compressors. Upon running the simulations, a round trip efficiency of 55% was obtained. Furthermore, it takes 296 seconds to increase the pressure of a cavern of 3000 m3 from 422.18 Kpa to 747.4 Kpa. The simulated turbine of 167 MW and design speed of 17000 rpm, with a nominal mass flow rate of 400 kg/s, will take 778 seconds to reach its nominal speed.
