Book Development and Application of a Spatial Database for Emergency Management Operations 1993 Midwest Flood

Download or read book Development and Application of a Spatial Database for Emergency Management Operations 1993 Midwest Flood written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During natural and man-made emergencies, there is a need for the rapid development of spatial databases to support recovery efforts. A spatial database was developed to support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Disaster Field Offices during the flooding that took place in the Midwest during the summer of 1993. The spatial database contains roads, railroads, hydrography, county boundaries and inundation data for seven rivers located in the Mississippi River basin. The spatial data came from a variety of sources, including U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line files, U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graphs and satellite imagery. An application of the spatial database is also described. Maps were produced showing roads, railways, hydrography, county boundaries and, when available, inundation data. These maps were then distributed to assist in the recovery efforts and future planning.

'Foundational' chapters provide a design framework and review ethical issues. 'Context' chapters describe the characteristics of individuals and organizations in which EMIS are designed and studied. 'Case Study' chapters include systems for distributed microbiology laboratory diagnostics to detect possible epidemics or bioterrorism, humanitarian MIS, and response coordination systems. 'Systems Design and Technology' chapters cover simulation, geocollaborative systems, global disaster impact analysis, and environmental risk analysis. Throughout the book, the editors and contributors give special emphasis to the importance of assessing the practical usefulness of new information systems for supporting emergency preparedness and response, rather than drawing conclusions from a theoretical understanding of the potential benefits of new technologies.

Book The Soil Conservation Service Responds to the 1993 Midwest Floods

Download or read book The Soil Conservation Service Responds to the 1993 Midwest Floods written by Steven Phillips and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study is to assist in program management by pointing out problems, both recurring and unique to 1993, which hamper an effective response to natural disasters. Starting from a historical summary of flooding on the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri rivers, it then describes 1993's disaster. Next, the general approach of the White House and Congress to flood recovery is examined. The activities of individual U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies also receive attention. Most of the document focuses on the Soil Conservation Service's flood recovery program, new wetlands and levee policies, and the vexing problems encountered in this work. Finally, the Service's work in each of the nine flood states will be discussed in detail.
