Book Designing Theatre Lesson Plans and a Standards based Theatre Curriculum Targeting Middle Level Adolescents

Download or read book Designing Theatre Lesson Plans and a Standards based Theatre Curriculum Targeting Middle Level Adolescents written by Carol A. Toney and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle level theatre educators, those teaching grades six through eight, often have difficulty finding resources that connect to adolescent interests and needs, that are age and ability appropriate, and that align with state educational goals and standards. This thesis explores the writing and designing of age appropriate middle level theatre lesson plans, a proposed middle level theatre curriculum aligned with the Missouri Show-Me Standards and the analysis of available theatre education resources. I developed a survey for middle school speech/theatre teachers that included questions concerning course offerings, curriculum development, and student productions. Using the results of this survey, I compared the North Kansas City School District's middle school theatre program to programs across the state. I discovered that while the North Kansas City School District already had a strong middle school theatre program in the areas of teacher certification, course offerings, and play productions, it lacked a strong Missouri Show-Me Standards based written curriculum. Based on these survey findings, I was able to justify my goal of writing a standards based middle school theatre curriculum for the North Kansas City School District. Another goal of my research was to analyze theatre textbooks and select one that was most appropriate for middle school theatre. I analyzed four textbooks with two textbook review tools. These textbook review tools included items such as readability, alignment with the speech/theatre curriculum, graphics, and tie into the Missouri Assessment Program test. After evaluating each text, I ranked the textbooks and choose one to recommend to my district. This research project incited a much-needed change in the teaching practices and instructional content in the speech/theatre program of the North Kansas City School District. Further research could be done to encourage reform at the state level to provide stronger support for arts education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our ability to understand others and help others understand us is essential to our individual and collective well-being. Yet there are many barriers that keep us from walking in the shoes of others: fear, skepticism, and power structures that separate us from those outside our narrow groups. To progress in a multicultural world and ensure our common good, we need to overcome these obstacles. Our best hope can be found in the skill of empathy. In Social Empathy, Elizabeth A. Segal explains how we can develop our ability to understand one another and have compassion toward different social groups. When we are socially empathic, we not only imagine what it is like to be another person, but we consider their social, economic, and political circumstances and what shaped them. Segal explains the evolutionary and learned components of interpersonal and social empathy, including neurobiological factors and the role of social structures. Ultimately, empathy is not only a part of interpersonal relations: it is fundamental to interactions between different social groups and can be a way to bridge diverse people and communities. A clear and useful explanation of an often misunderstood concept, Social Empathy brings together sociology, psychology, social work, and cognitive neuroscience to illustrate how to become better advocates for justice.

Book Theatre Arts Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools

Download or read book Theatre Arts Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools written by Virginia. Department of Education and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theatre Arts Standards of Learning identify the essential content and skills required in the theatre arts curriculum for the middle school and core high school courses in Virginia's public schools. The standards are designed to be cumulative and progress in complexity by course from the middle school through the secondary level. Throughout theatre arts education, course content is organized into four specific content strands or topics: Performance and Production, Cultural Context and Theatre History, Judgment and Criticism, and Aesthetics. It is through the acquisition of the concepts, content, and skills that the goals for theatre arts education can be realized. These goals include: (1) Thinking and acting creatively by solving problems individually or collaboratively and by employing originality, flexibility, and imagination; (2) Developing the acting skills necessary for creative dramatic performance; (3) Demonstrating knowledge of the elements of theatre production; (4) Demonstrating understanding of theatre arts in relation to history and culture; (5) Developing critical skills to evaluate one's own work and the work of others; (6) Demonstrating awareness of and responsibility for the safe and ethical use of materials, methods, and technologies; (7) Making connections between theatre arts and other fields of knowledge; (8) Demonstrating ability to apply aesthetic criteria for making artistic choices; and (9) Developing awareness of copyright and royalty requirements when rehearsing, performing, or otherwise using the works of others. A comprehensive theatre arts program provides students with the ability to understand their own responses and the responses of others to the many forms of theatrical experience. The standards are not intended to encompass the entire curriculum for a grade level or course, nor to prescribe how the content should be taught. Teachers are encouraged to go beyond these standards and select instructional strategies and assessment methods appropriate for their students.
