Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outlook for women with breast cancer has improved in recent years. Due to the combination of improved treatments and the benefits of mammography screening, breast cancer mortality has decreased steadily since 1989. Yet breast cancer remains a major problem, second only to lung cancer as a leading cause of death from cancer for women. To date, no means to prevent breast cancer has been discovered and experience has shown that treatments are most effective when a cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other tissues. These two facts suggest that the most effective way to continue reducing the death toll from breast cancer is improved early detection and diagnosis. Building on the 2001 report Mammography and Beyond, this new book not only examines ways to improve implementation and use of new and current breast cancer detection technologies but also evaluates the need to develop tools that identify women who would benefit most from early detection screening. Saving Women's Lives: Strategies for Improving Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis encourages more research that integrates the development, validation, and analysis of the types of technologies in clinical practice that promote improved risk identification techniques. In this way, methods and technologies that improve detection and diagnosis can be more effectively developed and implemented.

Download or read book User s Guide written by Tracy L. Scott and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammography screening is effective in the early detection of breast cancer especially among women 50 years and older. Detection and treatment of breast cancer at an early stage of disease can reduce mortality and medical care costs. For women aged 50 and older, mammography screening done every 1 to 2 years, followed by appropriate treatment for women who test positive, can decrease breast cancer mortality by up to 30%. Based on past research on mammography interventions, The Prudential Center for Health Care Research (PCHCR) has identified steps that can be taken to increase mammography rates, and has put together the tools that you will need to choose and implement intervention strategies. These tools, and a detailed discussion of the steps, are contained in: The Manual of Intervention Strategies to Increase Mammography Rates (Resource Manual), by Faye L. Wong (CDC). A User's Guide has been designed to assist you in utilizing the Resource Manual. It is Prudential HealthCare's priority to increase mammography screening rates among eligible members of the plan. The goal of the User's Guide and the Resource Manual is to assist you in increasing the mammography screening rates among the eligible members of your health plan. The Resource Manual is a source of basic information on mammography and the intervention strategies and tools that health plans may use to help increase the screening rates. The User's Guide outlines major points from the Resource Manual, and will help you find the information in the larger manual that is most relevant for your needs. The manuals are designed to be user-friendly, practical and adaptable to the needs and capacity of different health plans. Together with the resources suggested in the manuals, a health plan will have access to the basic information needed to successfully plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of mammography intervention strategies. There are three major steps involved in designing and implementing an intervention to increase mammography screening rates. To develop a successful intervention strategy, it is very important that you complete all three steps together. The best way to use this manual is to read each of the steps and decide which option or combination of options best suits your health plan.

Book Advancing the Science of Implementation Across the Cancer Continuum

Download or read book Advancing the Science of Implementation Across the Cancer Continuum written by David A. Chambers (DPhil) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many effective interventions have been developed with the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality from cancer, they are of no benefit to the health of populations if they cannot be delivered. In response to this challenge, Advancing the Science of Implementation across the Cancer Continuum provides an overview of research that can improve the delivery of evidence-based interventions in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship. Chapters explore the field of implementation science and its application to practice, a broad synthesis of relevant research and case studies illustrating each cancer-focused topic area, and emerging issues at the intersection of research and practice in cancer. Both comprehensive and accessible, this book is an ideal resource for researchers, clinical and public health practitioners, medical and public health students, and health policymakers.

Book Mammography and Beyond

Download or read book Mammography and Beyond written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year more than 180,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women in the U.S. If cancer is detected when small and local, treatment options are less dangerous, intrusive, and costly-and more likely to lead to a cure. Yet those simple facts belie the complexity of developing and disseminating acceptable techniques for breast cancer diagnosis. Even the most exciting new technologies remain clouded with uncertainty. Mammography and Beyond provides a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective on the state of breast cancer screening and diagnosis and recommends steps for developing the most reliable breast cancer detection methods possible. This book reviews the dramatic expansion of breast cancer awareness and screening, examining the capabilities and limitations of current and emerging technologies for breast cancer detection and their effectiveness at actually reducing deaths. The committee discusses issues including national policy toward breast cancer detection, roles of public and private agencies, problems in determining the success of a technique, availability of detection methods to specific populations of women, women's experience during the detection process, cost-benefit analyses, and more. Examining current practices and specifying research and other needs, Mammography and Beyond will be an indispensable resource to policy makers, public health officials, medical practitioners, researchers, women's health advocates, and concerned women and their families.

Book Breast Cancer Screening in a Low Income Managed Care Population

Download or read book Breast Cancer Screening in a Low Income Managed Care Population written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-income women have a high mortality from breast cancer. Yet, they participate in breast cancer early detection screening programs less than women in the general population. A randomized trial was designed to find the most effective intervention strategy to improve screening mammography rates of women participating in Tennessee's TennCare program. The strategies were: a) a prompter letter from Managed Care Organization (MCO); b) a reminder letter from primary care physician(PCP); c) telephone and/or in home counseling. These strategies and placebo were randomly assigned to 2357 participants. Control group(n=780) did not receive any intervention; Simple intervention group(n=79l) were mailed MCO letter; and Step-wise intervention group(n= 786) targeted MCO and PCP letter, and/or Counseling. The result shows that counseling was three more likely to increase mammography screening (RR=3.02;P=0.000001; CI:2.10, 4.34) than no intervention and about two and half time more likely than MCO letter (RR=2.33; P=0.00001; CI: 1.68,3.24). The PCP letter was one and half time more likely to increase the mammography rate than the no intervention (RR=1.5; P= 0.02; CI: 1.11,2.22). The study concluded that Counseling is the most effective and PCP letter was also found to be effective to improve mammography rates over no intervention group and MCO letter group.
