Book Managing Golf Players Transition from Junior to Professional Level

Download or read book Managing Golf Players Transition from Junior to Professional Level written by Stephanus Johannes Roos and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many individuals play the game of golf as a means of relaxation (Newsham, 2006). However, with time the large amounts of prize money in tournaments began to capture the attention of players (Hayman, Borkoles, Taylor, Hemmings, & Polman, 2014; Roos & Surujlal, 2014). Players entered tournaments, and soon realised they need to be competent and that this can only be achieved through professional coaching (Farrally et al., 2003; Roos & Surujlal, 2014). As a result, great demands has been placed on coaches and managers to develop quality players (Cushion, Armour, & Jones, 2003; Roos & Surujlal, 2014). According to Hayman et al. (2014), research has not indicated a sufficient pathway for junior golf players to reach professional level and be successful. It is therefore critical to explore all facets influential in the success of professional golf players. Despite the limited research on developmental pathways in golf, substantial research has examined developmental paths in elite sportsman (Hayman et al., 2014). The development of proficiency in sport is influenced by various environmental factors such as parental support and coach behaviours. This forms a crucial social network, and when the correct social networks are present, young sports people are more likely to achieve success and progress to elite sport level (Branton, 2013; CA̳℗þte̹, 1999; Csikszentmihalyi, Rathunde, & Whalen, 1997; Jowett & Timson-Katchis, 2005). Since the transition from junior to senior level within sport has shown to be a crucial step, where many athletes fail, it is important to gain more knowledge about the process and the correct method to approach this (Hayman et al., 2014; Jorle̹n, 2008). Assisting junior golf players in this endeavour has evolved from technical coaching to a full-time career management profession. This study aimed to develop a framework for the effective transition of junior golf players to professional level, therefore assisting future junior golf players to achieve success in professional golf. The main objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of former or current Sunshine Tour players, Professional Golfers℗þ Association of South Africa (PGA of SA) members, PGA of SA teaching professionals and/or golf administrators. This enabled the researcher to identify the most important psychosocial and environmental factors that can contribute to the effective transition from junior to professional level. The sample size consisted of 17 participants that took part in this research study. Specifically, perceptions on the correct transition strategies for junior golf players to achieve success at a professional level. This study attempted to understand these perceptions from the participants lived experiences which is a vital aspect for researchers working from the structure of a socio-constructionism system (Walters, 2009). By means of the available theoretical models and the empirical data obtained from the interviews, a comprehensive transition framework for junior golfers in the South African context was developed. The findings suggested that players are required to have mental attributes in order for them to be successful. Adding to the mental aspect of the player development is the social support structure. Participants indicated that individuals in this environment might influence players in a negative manner, and as a result add unnecessary pressure on them. Financial obligations place a lot of strain on a player℗þs mental state which demand that players employ certain skills to overcome a barrier such as this. This study indicated that in order for players to gain sponsorships and solve the financial implications involved, a personal brand needs to be developed by players. Coaches need to be aware of the influential role they play in this process and are required to constantly act as a mentor to a player. Furthermore, players need to participate in as many other sporting codes as possible at a young age. This study concluded that late specialisation is the correct method of development. Individuals pursuing to become a professional golfer need to be aware of the lonely lifestyle of professional golfers and the commitment that needs to be made. Players need to be willing to set aside a social life and be totally committed to the process of becoming better. These themes can guide programmes to help junior golf players achieve greater success in the transition towards professionalism. A better understanding about this endeavour could increase the chances of even more South African junior golf players to reach professional level.

Book The Role of Deliberate Practice in Developing Adolescent Golfing Excellence

Download or read book The Role of Deliberate Practice in Developing Adolescent Golfing Excellence written by Rick Hayman and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acquisition of expert performance has been studied for decades across a range of human performance domains. Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Römer (1993) proposed a theoretical framework termed the theory of deliberate practice to account for the characteristics and developmental experiences of individuals who acquire exceptional levels of performance in any discipline. This theory proposes that acquiring expertise across any domain is the result of undertaking an extensive acquisition period of approximately ten years involving the accumulation of thousands of hours of physically and mentally demanding practice regimes whilst overcoming effort, motivational and resource constraints that serve as barriers to the attainment of elite performance. Therefore, this thesis aimed to contribute to the under researched area of golf development systems by examining the applicability of deliberate practice theory in acquiring elite male adolescent golfer status. The first study, of four, utilised self-report diary logs to reveal the durations, types and intensities of golf activities undertaken by nine aspiring elite adolescent golfers over a nine month period and compared actual and retrospective accounts. In total, 62 percent of all golf activities were classified as either golf competitions or competitive practice rounds undertaken with high amounts of physical and mental effort and fun. This approach to development was beneficial for lowering the golf handicaps of several participants. Results reveal the performance improvements which aspiring elite adolescent golfers experienced whilst engaging with regular golf competitions and practice rounds instead of deliberate practice specific activities. However, such improvements did plateau once performers reached a handicap approaching two. Retrospective recall was also revealed as an accurate method to determine volumes and conditions of golf activities undertaken over a nine month period. Non-significant differences were revealed between actual and recalled data (training volumes p = 0.94, physical effort p = 0.83, mental effort p = 0.44, and fun p = 0.13) and effect sizes were small ranging (d = 0.03 - 0.31) The second study retrospectively examined the sports participation and practice trends of current elite adolescent male English golfers. It was found how these individuals tended not to participate within golf specific deliberate practice regimes until the mid-teenage years and instead encountered a diversified introduction to several sports, which included golf, within a playful, fun, non-competitive environment that resembled key tenets of deliberate play theory (Côté, 1999). A change in emphasis towards on-going golf development occurred around the age of 16 when exposure with golf specific deliberate practice became more evident once participants had gained selection for county and English Golf Union representative golf teams. The third study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the experiences of golfers who had all successfully travelled the path from novice to elite adolescent golfer status. Four super-ordinate themes emerged from participants accounts which revealed how elite adolescent golfers experienced supportive parents and a diversified enjoyable introduction to a range of sports. This was followed by a self-determined commitment to golf in the mid teenage years and a strategic approach to developing excellence which recognised the important role that psychology may play post 16 years of age. The forth study aimed to discover if the introduction of a golf specific deliberate practice intervention would improve putting performance and influence future practice behaviours of five aspiring elite adolescent golfers who had no prior experience of specialised golf training protocols. Participants completed a 13 week AB single-subject multiple-baseline design, social validation measures and five month follow up interviews. Mean putting performance was significantly higher (t4 = 6.94, p = .002, d = 3.12) in the intervention phase (M = 6.20, SD = 0.51) than the baseline phase (M = 4.64, SD = 0.57). All participants enjoyed undertaking deliberate practice, experienced a range of psychological and technical improvements, adapted current training schedules to mirror deliberate practice and committed long term to activities of this nature. In conclusion, the findings of the four empirical studies within this thesis suggest long term deliberate practice is not a pre-requisite throughout childhood and the early teenage years for securing selection within international adolescent golf squads. However, engagement in deliberate practice post 16 years of age was found to be an important training strategy for the continued performance development of emerging and elite level adolescent golfers. The pathway to elite adolescent status more closely resembled Côté's (1999) deliberate play theory with sampling during early childhood, specialising during early teenage years, and investment in later teenage years. The collective findings of this thesis may provide players, coaches, applied sport psychologists and policy makers involved within golf talent development systems with clearer insights into conditions of participation and practice that appear optimal for achieving adolescent golfing excellence.

Book A Constraints Led Approach to Golf Coaching

Download or read book A Constraints Led Approach to Golf Coaching written by Ian Renshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the popularity of golf is coming under increased pressure, it continues to hook millions of players. However, the complexity of the game and the extremely high level of precision required to hit the ball consistently well means that it is a game that is difficult to even become ‘good’ at, let alone master. Consequently, irrespective of whether the player is a weekend golfer, a club member, or a tour professional, the search for the key to playing good golf feeds an insatiable desire for ideas and tips to improve golf performance and bring one’s handicap down. However, traditional coaching, with its primary focus on developing the perfect swing is not leading to a reduction in handicaps and the time is ripe for a new approach. This book aims to fill this void and is a landmark text for golf coaches and players about applying a constraints-led approach (CLA) to golf coaching. In this book, two golf coaches, Pete Arnott and Graeme McDowall talk to Ian Renshaw to demonstrate how their practice is driven and inspired by their alignment to a CLA. A Constraints-Led Approach to Golf Coaching includes case studies and examples of how constraints are manipulated to induce adaption in the technical, tactical (or put in golf terms, course management), physiological, and psychological development mechanisms needed to improve at golf. Examples cover coaching from their work with beginners, high handicappers, aspirant tour players, and elite players looking to make the ‘tour’.

Book How to Play Better Golf Without Practicing

Download or read book How to Play Better Golf Without Practicing written by Alan Riley and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing better golf without practicing, isn't that every golfers dream? Does that sound too good to be true? It is not! What people fail to realize is that golf is played as much with the mind as it is with the body. Having more fun and being better at playing golf, in large part, requires an improvement in how a person uses thier brain and chooses to think while playing golf. Unfortunately golfers have, for the most part, ignored use of their brain as a way to improve their games and to increase their enjoyment of golf. For most golfers, improvement means purchasing the latest, greatest golf club or trying out a tip they read in a golf magazine or watched on television. Despite using technologically advanced golf clubs and balls and improving their swing technique, many golfers do not seem to be lowering their scores. The concepts explained in this book are simple, extremely effective, easy to apply, and are the same ones that the best players in the world are using. Professional golfers have come to realize that at the PGA Tour level everyone has terrific physical skills. The difference between the players and the good players are the mental skills. Most golfers do not have the physical talent to be able to hit the ball like Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam, but everyone, absolutely, positively has the mental capacity to learn how to think like them! Every golfer can benefit by learning more about how to think properly while playing golf. I believe that golfers have a huge untapped potential that is just waiting to be unlocked. Apply the simply, common sense techniques explained in this book and you too can have more fun and play better golf!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every player has beaten balls on the driving range working on his or her game, either alone or with a teacher. Everyone has paged through a copy of Golf Digest looking for the latest tip. Or watched an instructional video looking for the easiest way to lower scores. But all of that access to top-tier instruction, video swing analysis and game improving equipment hasn't made golfers any better as a group. The average handicap hasn't budged in 30 years. It's still the same 19.1. Why? Because the information is being delivered inefficiently-even if it's ideally suited to the player. Any player from beginner to aspiring tour player can improve in a much more direct and enjoyable way using a time-tested and results-proven method backed by cutting-edge research in human learning and brain function. It's a technique used by the Marine Corps, Harvard Business School and the NBA. Unlike the dozens of other instruction books that come out every year, Real Golf isn't a collection of mechanical adjustments, tips and drills. It is a complete guide to sorting, evaluating and successfully integrating the instruction players are already receiving from a teacher, magazine, book or a video. It is instruction on how to use instruction. Using the sophisticated, personalized self-scrimmage strategies detailed in the book, players can make dramatic scoring breakthroughs immediately, and see massive handicap improvement in eight to 10 weeks. Most players improve their game to a point, then stall at a certain handicap. The scores they shoot stubbornly cluster in five or six shot comfort zone. Real Golf is rooted in cutting edge research on human behavior and learning, but the results aren't theoretical. Joe Bosco has been developing these techniques for nearly 20 years as an award-winning golf instructor in the Chicagoland area. Trained by a high-level management consultant, Bosco has built his reputation as a complete game teacher. In addition to teaching alongside Stan Utley-who will write the foreword to the book-Hank Haney and Mike Adams, Bosco has helped dozens of competitive players earn club championships and Division I scholarships. A nominee for Golf Magazine's 2012 Top 100 Teachers list, Bosco has led the North Shore Country Day Raiders boys' golf team to the last two state championships, and has personally coached seven individual high school state champions in the state of Illinois. Many of the techniques shared in Real Golf have been incubated in Bosco's high-performance "golf classroom" for junior players. He is also a regional board member of the Positive Coaching Alliance-a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth and high school athletes receive a character-building and positive sports experience.
