Both emotion knowledge and perspective-taking skills impact how young children develop unique views the world; specifically, these skills are often relied upon for detecting deception in others. The purpose of the study was to examine predictors of children deception detection skills to shed light on the development of social cognition. Specifically, preschoolers emotion knowledge was examined as a potential moderator of the relation between Theory of Mind (ToM) and deception detection. Results indicated both children emotion knowledge and ToM develop over the preschool years and are positively related to the development of deception detection. However, emotion knowledge does not moderate the relation between ToM and deception detection.

Thinking about the many people who were doing important and interesting research in this area, it was hard to narrow down the choice to just a few. Eventually, I put together a panel which at least was representative of this burgeoning area of research. In planning this volume two years later, I was faced with much the same predicament, except to an even larger degree. For, during that short period, the area of children's nonverbal behavior carne to grow even larger, with more perspectives being brought to bear on the question of the processes involved in the development of children's nonverbal behav ior. The present volume attempts to capture these advances which have occurred as the field of children's nonverbal behavior has moved from its own infancy into middle childhood. The book is organized into five major areas, representative of the most important approaches to the study of children's nonverbal behavior: 1) Psychobiological and ethological approaches, 2) social developmental approaches, 3) encoding and decoding skill approaches, 4) discrepant verbal-nonverbal communication approaches, and 5) personality and individual difference approaches. The discreteness of these categories should not be overemphasized, as there is a good deal of overlap between the various approaches. Book excerpt: In order to best prepare children for school, we need to know what factors contribute to their success, both academically and in social situations. Both executive functions and social skills are needed to get children ready for school and for the more socially ambiguous situations it will bring. One example of that would be deception; both understanding when someone else is deceiving you and knowing if it is appropriate to tell a lie yourself. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between children who tell lies for their own self-gain and those who lie to please others in terms of their age, vocabulary, executive functions, and social skills. Additionally, the study examined which of those factors contributed to children being able to successfully detect when someone else was lying to them. Results showed that children who lie to please others tend to be younger and perform worse on executive functions, vocabulary and social skills. For deception detection, those who were older and had stronger executive functions were better able to detect when someone was deceiving them.
