This book was released on 2016 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing is an extremely important skill students need to be successful in a school. However, it is one of the most difficult skills not only for ESL students but also for native speakers. Arabic speaking students are one of the ESL groups who have difficulty developing well-written paragraphs due to the difference between Arabic and English. The other factors that contribute to their problem are the influence from their first language, transfer of Arabic style and organization on English writing, and teaching methods. The research shows that integrating technology such as weblogs positively impact the development of students’ writing. The purpose of this project is to design a unit plan to help Arabic speaking students acquire English writing skills. The unit plan includes several lessons to assist teachers in their endeavors to improve students writing through the writing process. The project also aims at providing learners with support to be writers and publishers in weblogs.

Book Arab Students Difficulties with English Writing During Their Transition to the United States

Download or read book Arab Students Difficulties with English Writing During Their Transition to the United States written by Rima Nassar Ahmad Zghyer and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many research studies have been conducted in Arab countries to examine the difficulties that Arab students encounter in learning English writing. Unfortunately, not much of that scholarship deals with the challenges that these second language learners face when they pursue degrees abroad. Furthermore, the earlier studies failed to include the students' views about their difficulties, the causes, and possible solutions. In an effort to fill the gap in our understanding of the problems Arab students face in learning to write in English, this study explores the experiences and perceptions of a sampling of forty Arab students who chose to study in the United States. The students who participated provide firsthand information about their experiences in distinctly different learning and cultural environments; they provide information about their difficulties in improving their English writing skills and offer suggestions for all who teach writing to second language learners. The difficulties identified and described by these students provide a sketch of experiences and perceptions of Arab students who learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in their home countries and English as a Second Language (ESL) in the United States. The information provided as a result of this study will guide future research on second language learners, help develop pedagogies that will better serve the students, and expand our understanding of language acquisition as it pertains to an increasingly multilingual world.

Book Utilizing the Writing Process Approach with English as a Second Language Writers

Download or read book Utilizing the Writing Process Approach with English as a Second Language Writers written by Najwa M. Alhosani and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study sought to gain deeper understanding of the role the writing process approach played in developing the writing ability of five fifth grade Saudi Arabian students when writing in English as a second language. The study extended for five months in a Midwest elementary school serving a large ESL population. Participants of this study included four ESL teachers and five Saudi ESL students, four females and one male. Two main queries guided this study: 1) the roles of ESL teachers when using the writing process approach in teaching writing in English as a second language to five fifth grade Saudi Arabian ESL students; and 2) the role of the writing process approach in the writing development of five fifth grade Saudi Arabian ESL students. The researcher documented data through four sources: classroom observation, interviews with ESL teacher and ESL students, student think-aloud protocols, and student writing samples. The data analysis of the ESL teachers revealed strong advocacy of utilizing the writing process as an effective method to improve ESL Saudi Arabian students' writing ability. They were successful in employing the writing process approach regardless of their students' English language proficiency level, using numerous writing strategies including collaborative writing activities, games, varying speed and voice tone, interest in students' cultures and languages, and social interaction with the students. The data analysis of the study's student focus revealed that students writing was not a one step process, yet an ongoing cycle in which they prewrite, plan, draft, pause, read, revise, edit, and publish. Students demonstrated different attitudes and behaviors toward writing throughout this study. Four of the students valued their second language (L2); one, however, found English difficult and confusing. Some of the students' writing sample scores, determined by the Six Traits Writing Rubric, differed by the end of the study while others' remained the same. This study provided rich data to better understand the importance of teachers utilizing effective writing process techniques and the impact of the writing process approach on Saudi Arabian students learning to write in English in an American school setting.
