Book excerpt: Question: What is the God-given purpose of the local church? Answer: Relational discipleship. DiscipleShift walks you through five key "shifts" that churches must make to refocus on the fundamental biblical mission of discipleship. These intentional changes will attract the world and empower your church members to be salt and light in their communities. Over the last thirty years, many influential church leaders and church planters in America have adopted various models for reaching unchurched people. While many of these approaches have merit, something is still missing, something even more fundamental to the mission of the church: discipleship. Making disciples—helping people to trust and follow Jesus—is the church's God-given mandate. Devoted disciples attract people outside the church because of the change others see in their Christ-like lives. And discipleship empowers Christians to be more like Christ as they intentionally develop relationships with non-believers. Through biblical and professional insights, Jim Putman and Bobby Harrington discuss the transformational effectiveness of making disciples and just how to do so, in practical terms. You’ll learn: The specific roles of a disciple-making pastor. The components of person-to-person discipleship. How each ministry in your church leads to discipleship. How to implement discipleship in your church. Disciple-making leaders will not produce perfect churches, but they will create effective churches.

Book The Disciple Maker s Handbook

Download or read book The Disciple Maker s Handbook written by Bobby Harrington and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people believe that discipleship is important, but they need help. In fact, the vast majority of Christians report that they have never been personally discipled by a more mature follower of Jesus. Is it any wonder that they have a difficult time knowing how to disciple others? If making disciples of Jesus is the greatest cause on earth, how should we equip people to do it? This handbook is a practical guide for how to embrace the discipleship lifestyle – being a disciple of Jesus and how to make other disciples of Jesus. With contributions from pastors and teachers like Francis Chan, Jeff Vanderstelt, Bill Hull, Jim Putman, KP Yohannan, and Robert Coleman, the authors present seven elements that are necessary for disciple making to occur: Jesus—the original disciple maker and centerpiece of discipleship. Holy Spirit—fuels the disciple-making process. Intentionality—making disciples utilizing a strategy and a roadmap. Relationships—creating a loving, genuine connection with others who trust and follow Jesus. Bible—using the Word of God as the manual for making disciples. Journey—forging a traceable growth story from a new birth to spiritual parenthood. Multiply—reproducing the discipleship process so that the disciple becomes a disciple maker. Whether you are a parent who wants to disciple your children, a small group leader who wants to disciple those in your group, or a church leader who wants to disciple future leaders, the seven key elements in this handbook form a framework for understanding discipleship that can be applied in countless situations. In addition, there are questions provided in each section to help you think through how to apply the material to your disciple making efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without question, the faith community finds itself challenged with deriving solutions that respond to the needs of both faith walkers and faith seekers. Daily, people find themselves bombarded with life disruption, constant discouragement, and nagging distractors. The cries for hope, faith, comfort and direction are poignant, and who is better positioned and equipped to answer these cries like the church can do, and I say this because as a body, the church has been divinely called to perform such good works in communities around the globe. The Bible provides us with both the instruction and tools that those of us in ministry need to manifest action into results. The Bible offers us guidance as it relates to evangelism and discipleship, and it is for us, as Great Commission servant leaders, to commit ourselves intentionally to pursue this aspect of ministry. Dr. Aaron R. Jones, a notable ministry servant leader in this book, "Interfacing Evangelism and Discipleship: Practical Evangelism and Discipleship Program Instructional Manual" provides the reader with a roadmap, a capacity building toolkit that offers biblically based strategies and ministry approaches that can equip ministry teams in the establishment and elevation of their works in evangelism and discipleship. Dr. Jones details how to integrate Evangelism and Discipleship fully into a church's ministry work, as well as how to mesh the two effectively so that indeed the church is able to answer the cries of people from all walks of life who need the church like never before.

Book Discipleship that Fits

  • ISBN : 0310522641
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Discipleship that Fits written by Bobby Harrington and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For far too long, the church has tried to make disciples using a one-size-fits-all approach. Some churches advocate 1-on-1 discipling, others try getting everyone into a small group, while still others training through mission trips or service projects. Yet others focus all their efforts on attracting people to a large group gathering to hear biblical teaching and preaching. But does one size really fit everyone? Based on careful biblical study and years of experience making disciples in the local church, Bobby Harrington and Alex Absalom have identified five key relationships where discipleship happens in our lives. In each relational context we need to understand how discipleship occurs and we need to set appropriate expectations for each context. Discipleship That Fits shows you the five key ways discipleship occurs. It looks at how Jesus made disciples and how disciples were formed in the early church. Each of the contexts is necessary at different times and in different ways as a person grows toward maturity in Christ: Public Relationships: The church gathering corporately for worship Social Relationships: Networks of smaller relationships where we engage in mission and live out our faith in community Personal Relationships: Small groups of six to sixteen people where we challenge and encourage one another on a regular basis Transparent Relationships: Close relationships of three to four where we share intimate details of our lives for accountability The Divine Relationship: Our relationship with Jesus Christ where we grow through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit Filled with examples and stories, Alex and Bobby show you how to develop discipleship practices in each relational context by sharing how Jesus did it, how the early church practiced it, and how churches are discipling people today.

Book Seeking the Lost Keeping Them Making Them Disciples

Download or read book Seeking the Lost Keeping Them Making Them Disciples written by Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking the Lost, Keeping Them, Making Them Disciples By: Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme God bless Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme for all the work he has done in putting this book together. I believe that any church or leader who will follow these biblically-grounded principles will see beautiful results in changed lives for the kingdom. Teresa L. Reeve, PhD, Associate Dean, Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Associate Professor of New Testament Contexts, Andrews University, United States of America Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme’s contribution to the discipleship crisis is a compelling re-examination of scripture, church history, and 21st century pastoral experience. Practical and convincing, his straightforward style brings real solutions to the evangelistic Achilles’ heels of attrition. He reminds us of what has been forgotten and calls us back to our relational roots. Pr. Ron Kelly, Senior Pastor, Village Seventh-day Adventist Church, Berrien Springs, Michigan, United States of America Seeking the Lost, Keeping Them, Making Them Disciples by Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme is a handy Christ-based discipleship resource that will contribute to the mission of training and equipping church ministry leaders in the evangelistic work of reaping, retaining, and nurturing new believing Christians. This is a must-read for church officers, pastors, and ministry directors in the Christian church. Ron C. Smith, PhD., D.Min, President, Southern Union Conference of SDA Every year, many thousands of people hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and choose to be baptized and join a church community. Unfortunately, it is also true that every year many new converts leave a church relatively shortly after joining. The specific reasons that each person leaves the church could fill a book by themselves, but they all boil down to one thing: a lack of focus on the part of the church community on turning converts into disciples of our Savior. A disciple of Christ does more than attend church services. A disciple is an active member of the church community. A disciple is a witness to others. A disciple seeks to grow the church by seeking to lead everyone they meet to Christ. Dr. Benoit Petit-Homme is a committed disciple of Christ, and after extensive study of exactly why new converts leave the church, he has developed a process by which any church can make disciples. All it takes is a little extra work, a bit of encouragement, and an unwavering faith in the Lord.

Book Servants of Righteousness Discipleship Training Program

Download or read book Servants of Righteousness Discipleship Training Program written by Eric Huntley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church has forgotten about making disciples of its members. Very few have discipleship training programs. They lead the new believers to Christ and then leave them to fend for themselves. The churches then wonder why so many fall away from the Body of Christ. Without guidance and instruction, these things will continue to be so. Being born again doesn't automatically make someone a disciple; they must be taught. The lack of formal discipleship training in the churches is the root cause of new converts (baby Christians) running undisciplined in the Church. They are easily offended, back bite, are disrespectful to leaders, and are looking more like the world than the world. The fact that someone has been in Church for over ten or twenty years does not make them a mature Christian. Without discipleship, it is very likely that they are still considered infants in Christ. The Church became weak willed due to the absence of discipleship training. Fear has caused the Church to side with the world in many instances instead of taking a stand when something is wrong. The cares of the of the world are beginning to infiltrate the Church. The Church is also behaving more like the world instead of lifting a spiritual standard that Jesus outlined in Mark 16:17-18. "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover", is nonexistent in most Churches. The Bible tells us that God is no respecter of persons. What He has done for one He will do for another so the signs and wonders that were following the early Church in the book of Acts should still be happening today! Church members must be disciplined in the things of God if we want to see more manifestation of the spiritual gifts in operation within the Church. This training program is a step in the right direction. It will give the new member, the new believer, and those in need of spiritual training the basic tools necessary for their journey to becoming a disciple of Christ. No training program can be an all in all for everyone. Training must continue after the program is over by diligently studying and meditating on the Word, attending Bible Study, faithfulness to Sunday Service, and going out into the highways and byways spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book TRIPLE THREAT DISCIPLESHIP

Download or read book TRIPLE THREAT DISCIPLESHIP written by Dr Brad Ball and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making disciples matters to God and should matter to the church and every Christ follower. This book proposes to deal with the necessity of making disciples and how to disciple a new or young Christ follower. In America, I believe this is a key issue for us to address. I have heard many people in the church say, "I was converted, but never discipled." I will be encouraging, exhorting, and urging you to return in your personal life and in the church to disciple making. I will give you some helps through what I call a Triple Threat Discipleship model using three key verses as the basis for this book: 2 Timothy 2:2; Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Timothy 4:7-8. In this book, I will make clear the necessity of following the command in Matthew 28:19 to make disciples. "Go, baptize, and teach" all support the command of making disciples. In the churches I have been in over the years, they do a fairly good job at winning the lost to the Lord Jesus and baptizing them, but they have not done a good job at teaching them how live out this newfound faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. - Brad Ball If you are looking for an accessible nuts-and-bolts strategy for making disciples, either personally or in the context of your local congregation, then Triple Threat Discipleship is for you. I highly recommend it. - Dr. Ken Easley Professor of Biblical Studies and Director of Graduate Programs, School of Theology and Missions, Germantown Regional Campus, Union University, Pastor, McLean Baptist Church, Memphis Being introduced to true Discipleship by Dr. Ball has had a tremendously positive influence on my walk with Christ. My faith has never gone through a more transforming and inspiring process. Being a part of his D-Group opened my eyes to a completely new lifestyle of remaining in God's word, committing scripture to memory, and living daily in a spirit of prayer. - Jason B. Page, church member, age 41 Aside from salvation, joining a D-group with Dr. Ball has been the greatest thing to happen to my life! If you honestly and truly go in seeking God's will then it will change your life in every aspect. - Caleb Wilson, church member, age 26 Brad Ball received his Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching at Union University in Jackson, TN, and now is currently the Senior Pastor of Bethsaida Baptist Church in Dublin, GA. Brad has pastored and served at churches in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida for twenty-five years. He is the founder of Triple Threat Discipleship, which is a blog and teaching ministry focused on making disciples. Brad is passionate about preaching the gospel and the Word of God and making disciples who make disciples. Brad and his wife, Janice have been married for twenty-five years. Janice is a disciple maker and very much involved in the ministry at Bethsaida."
