Book Developing a Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health Education Model for Adolescents Using Mixed Methods

Download or read book Developing a Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health Education Model for Adolescents Using Mixed Methods written by Halimah Awang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study is about developing an intervention model to increase students' knowledge on various aspects of sexual and reproductive health. The model consists of 12 modules covering topics, which include physical changes in one's own body from a young age to puberty, sexuality, girl-boy relationships, abstinence, rape, pregnancy, and related laws and legislation. The modules were developed based on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis of existing sexual and reproductive health education modules currently available in and outside of Malaysia. These modules were then tested by trained facilitators to students, aged 13 to 18, in selected secondary schools in Malaysia in the form of classroom activities which include slide presentation, games, songs, role-play, and group participation. Due to the differences in the time and class allocated by the schools, the modules implemented were selected to suit the ages of the students while ensuring that each student was exposed to at least three modules. The students were grouped into two age groups, namely, 15 years and younger and 16 years and older. To examine the impact of the intervention, the students were asked to answer 22 questions on sexual and reproductive health before the session began and answer the same questions immediately after the session ended. The difference in the proportion of participants with correct answers on sexual and reproductive health knowledge items before and after intervention was assessed using the McNemar test for dependent sample.

Book Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Course A Mixed Media Intervention and Quality Improvement Project in a School Based Setting

Download or read book Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Course A Mixed Media Intervention and Quality Improvement Project in a School Based Setting written by Stephanie Calabrese and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section I: Abstract Problem: California's adolescents carry a significant burden of newly acquired sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and gaps in adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge have led to poor adolescent health outcomes. (CDE, 2019). Context: The California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329) was enacted on January 1, 2016, calling all school districts to ensure that all pupils receive comprehensive sexual health education, and HIV prevention education (CDE, 2019). In a proactive motion, parents from a northern California middle school approached a university to provide a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student to instruct its sixth grade's SRH course. Intervention: A DNP student agreed to teach a SRH course with a mixed media method rather than a traditional lecture series to meet the requirements of this bill and the need of the community. Measures: This Quality Improvement (QI) project utilized a pre/post-test design to evaluate how effective the lessons are at influencing student SRH knowledge retention over five lessons in the spring school semester. Results: This teaching mixed media SRH course resulted in a 11.36% increase in adolescent SRH knowledge retention, built community bonds between the adolescent school and local university, and showcased that a DNP student is an ideal SHR instructor. Conclusion: To effectively engage adolescents and increase SRH knowledge retention, a mixed media teaching curriculum is effective. Additionally, a DNP student can help build knowledge within the community and improve adolescent health outcomes in community-based settings.

Book Comprehensive Sexual Health Education for Adolescents

Download or read book Comprehensive Sexual Health Education for Adolescents written by Dawson K. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With adolescents becoming sexually active at ages as young as ten years old there is a documented need for proper education; and to dispel the myths and other inaccurate information that has formed their erroneous knowledge base leading to poor choices. In the United States approximately eight hundred and twenty thousand teenage girls become pregnant each year. The cost of supporting these pregnancies and through the first year of the child's life exceed half a billion dollars per year in a conservative estimate. A less expensive alternative for tax payers would be proper education of our youth. The purpose of this project is to measure the effectiveness of an independently designed reproductive health class on rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection. Adolescent girls ages twelve to eighteen will be the target audience for this program. Presenting material in a format that is reflective of the current time and culture of our youth, up-to-date information regarding sexually transmitted infection, contraceptives, and abstinence can be provided in a comfortable yet protected environment. Several local physicians and registered nurses are in support of this program and have volunteered future time and service. The project start-up costs are minimal, for advertising, materials and supplies would be approximately $1,038.00. Success can easily be measured by the data routinely obtained in the obstetrical department of the hospital.

Book Safe Space for Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Download or read book Safe Space for Comprehensive Sexuality Education written by Willams Elizabeth Talatu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAFE SPACE FOR COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATIONAuthor: Olajumoke AdebayoIntroduction Sexually transmitted infections including HIV, early and unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortions, and gender-based violence are some of the issues many young people often experience due to inequitable sexual and gender norms. Despite, comprehensive sexuality education programs being proven to improve the sexual health and well-being of young people [1]. Socially conservative countries such as Nigeria, have traditional gatekeepers such as religious and educational authorities, making it difficult for young people to access information on sexual and reproductive health [2]. These prevents young people from building and enjoying healthy and respectful relationships as they transition into adulthood. This paper attempts to contribute how peer-to peer interaction in safe spaces can be a tool to further provide comprehensive sexuality education to young people. Intervention DesignObservations made from interactions between young people on social media platforms showed that young people in Nigeria were still not getting the correct appropriate information. Therefore creating a safe space for young people to get accurate information about the sexual and reproductive health was necessary. Passage Between Your Legs is an adolescent sexual and reproductive (SRH) project designed to serve as a non-judgemental safe space for young people 17 years and above, to access quality, accurate SRH information.Methodology The project is currently being implemented in Lagos state in south-west Nigeria. The project was targeted to reach a 100 young people between the ages of 17-30 years. Social media was a major tool to reach out to young people. Learning methods include use of audio-visuals aids, peer-to-peer interaction, demonstrations and learning games. Results/key findings A total of four meet-ups were done, 92 young people were reached through meet-ups, Males 34(37%) and females 58(63%) and 5,736 through social media. Evaluations showed that participants found meet-ups safe for open discussions and provided new insights and learning opportunities. Feedback from young people who attended:T, female 23 years old: I learnt that consent is not silence, it is my right and I can withdraw consent at anytime. Y, Male 25 years: I learn from every meet-up, most importantly I learnt to be assertive and make the right choices about my sexuality and to always give and seek consent always. M, male 24 years: It was fun and interactive and I learnt a lot of new things about my sexuality.H, female 21 years: meet-ups are always fun I learnt to make a dental dam and found out about lubricants.K, female 19 years: I find meet-ups very fun, interactive and I get comfortable to share without feeling judged. Advocacy Impact Comprehensive sexuality education has been proven to improve the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of young people, however by-passing gatekeeper such as religious and educational authorities especially in socially conservative countries have proven to be a great challenge for young people to access quality comprehensive sexuality education. The safe space sexual health meetup has proven to by-pass gatekeepers and also used as an avenue to provide basic sexual and reproductive health services to young people free of judgement and discrimination irrespective of gender or sexual orientation. Key Recommendation from the sexual health meetups:Need for more safe spaces where young people can access comprehensive sexuality education.Existing safe spaces can be used as an avenue to provide basic sexual and reproductive health care for young people.Social media should be an important tool for providing information on sexual and reproductive health.ReferencesSecor-Turner. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Investing in the Health and Well Being of Young Adults

Download or read book Investing in the Health and Well Being of Young Adults written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young adulthood - ages approximately 18 to 26 - is a critical period of development with long-lasting implications for a person's economic security, health and well-being. Young adults are key contributors to the nation's workforce and military services and, since many are parents, to the healthy development of the next generation. Although 'millennials' have received attention in the popular media in recent years, young adults are too rarely treated as a distinct population in policy, programs, and research. Instead, they are often grouped with adolescents or, more often, with all adults. Currently, the nation is experiencing economic restructuring, widening inequality, a rapidly rising ratio of older adults, and an increasingly diverse population. The possible transformative effects of these features make focus on young adults especially important. A systematic approach to understanding and responding to the unique circumstances and needs of today's young adults can help to pave the way to a more productive and equitable tomorrow for young adults in particular and our society at large. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults describes what is meant by the term young adulthood, who young adults are, what they are doing, and what they need. This study recommends actions that nonprofit programs and federal, state, and local agencies can take to help young adults make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. According to this report, young adults should be considered as a separate group from adolescents and older adults. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults makes the case that increased efforts to improve high school and college graduate rates and education and workforce development systems that are more closely tied to high-demand economic sectors will help this age group achieve greater opportunity and success. The report also discusses the health status of young adults and makes recommendations to develop evidence-based practices for young adults for medical and behavioral health, including preventions. What happens during the young adult years has profound implications for the rest of the life course, and the stability and progress of society at large depends on how any cohort of young adults fares as a whole. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults will provide a roadmap to improving outcomes for this age group as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us have a complicated relationship with our body. Maybe you've been made to feel ashamed of your body or like it isn't good enough. Maybe your body is riddled with stress, pain, or the effects of trauma. Maybe you think of your body as an accessory to what you believe you really are--your mind. Maybe your experiences with racism, sexism, ableism, heterosexism, ageism, or sizeism have made you believe your body isn't the right kind of body. Whatever the reason, many of us don't feel at home in our bodies. But being disconnected from ourselves as bodies means being disconnected from truly living and from the interconnection that weaves us all together. Psychologist and award-winning researcher Hillary McBride explores the broken and unhealthy ideas we have inherited about our body. Embodiment is the way we are in the world, and our embodiment is heavily influenced by who we have been allowed to be. McBride shows that many of us feel disembodied due to colonization, racism, sexism, and patriarchy--destructive systems that rank certain bodies as less valuable, beautiful, or human than others. Embracing our embodiment can liberate us from these systems. As we come to understand the world around us and the stories we've been told, we see that our perspective of reality often limits how we see and experience ourselves, each other, and what we believe is Sacred. Instead of the body being a problem to overcome, our bodies can be the very place where we feel most alive, the seat of our spirituality and our wisdom. The Wisdom of Your Body offers a compassionate, healthy, and holistic perspective on embodied living. Weaving together illuminating research, stories from her work as a therapist, and deeply personal narratives of healing from a life-threatening eating disorder, a near-fatal car accident, and chronic pain, McBride invites us to reclaim the wisdom of the body and to experience the wholeness that has been there all along. End-of-chapter questions and practices are included.
