Book The Nature of German Imperialism

Download or read book The Nature of German Imperialism written by Bernhard Gissibl and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the East African state of Tanzania is renowned for wildlife preserves such as the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Selous Game Reserve. Yet few know that most of these initiatives emerged from decades of German colonial rule. This book gives the first full account of Tanzanian wildlife conservation up until World War I, focusing upon elephant hunting and the ivory trade as vital factors in a shift from exploitation to preservation that increasingly excluded indigenous Africans. Analyzing the formative interactions between colonial governance and the natural world, The Nature of German Imperialism situates East African wildlife policies within the global emergence of conservationist sensibilities around 1900.

Book Islam and Politics in East Africa

Download or read book Islam and Politics in East Africa written by August H. Nimtz, Jr. and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1980-12-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam and Politics in East Africa was first published in 1980. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Focusing on the interplay of religion, society, and politics, August Nimtz examines the role of sufi tariqas (brotherhoods) in Tanzania, where he observed an African Muslim society at first hand. Nimtz opens this book with a historical account of Islam in East Africa, and in subsequent chapters analyzes the role of tariqas in Tanzania and, more specifically, in the coastal city of Bagamoyo. Using a conceptual framework derived from contemporary political theories on social cleavages and individual interests. Nimtz explains why the tariqa is important in the process of political change. The fundamental cleavage in Muslim East Africa, he notes, is that of "whites" versus blacks. Nimtz contends that the tariqus, in serving the interest of blacks (that is, Africans), became in turn vehicles for the mass mobilization of African Muslims during the anti-colonial struggle. In Bagamoyo he finds a similar process and, in addition, reveals that the tariqas have served African interests in opposition to those of "whites" because of the individual benefits they provide. At the same time, Nimtz concludes, the social structure of East African Muslim society has ensured that Africans would be particularly attracted to these benefits. This work will interest both observers of African political development and specialists in the Islamic studies.

Book Expeditions in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Expeditions in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Jörn Happel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the processes of scientific, cultural, political, technical, colonial and violent appropriation during the 19th century. The 19th century was the century of world travel. The earth was explored, surveyed, described, illustrated, and categorized. Travelogues became world bestsellers. Modern technology accompanied the travelers and adventurers: clocks, a postal and telegraph system, surveying equipment, and cameras. The world grew together faster and faster. Previously unknown places became better known: the highest peaks, the coldest spots, the hottest deserts, and the most remote cities. Knowledge about the white spots of the earth was systematically collected. Those who made a name for themselves in the 19th century are still read today. Alexander von Humboldt or Charles Darwin made the epoch a scientific heyday. Ida Pfeiffer or Isabelle Bird (Bishop) traveled to distant continents and took their readers at home on insightful journeys. Hermann Vámbéry or Sir Richard Burton got to know the most remote languages and regions. There are countless travel reports about a fascinating century, which, with surveying and exploration, also brought colonial conquest and exploitation into the world. In ten individual studies, the authors explore travelers from all over the world and analyze their successes. The unifying element of all the studies is the experience of distance and its communication by means of travelogues to the armchair travelers who have stayed at home. This volume will be of value to students and scholars both interested in modern history, social and cultural history, and the history of science and technology.

  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Arab Versus European written by Norman Robert Bennett and published by Holmes & Meier Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work analyzes competition between followers of two major world religions for mastery of the east central region of Africa. Bennett meticulously traces the process by which European economic and political rivalry with the Muslim rulers of east central Africa became transformed into a holy war against the Arabs. Bennett documents these complex relationships through three stages of their development: the first contacts of Arabs, Europeans, and Africans (1800 to 1870s); the peaceful competition of the 1880s; and the downfall of Zanzibar dominions in the last part of the 19th century.
