Weltkrieg thematisieren. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse in den 23 Beiträgen liegt auf den in den repräsentativen Beispieltexten vermittelten Kriegsbildern und bezieht die Rezeption der Texte und ihre Wirksamkeit für das Bild vom I. Weltkrieg sowohl in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit als auch in der Gegenwart ein. Unter der Prämisse der Analyse der Wandlung des Bildes vom ‘modernen’ Krieg, als dessen paradigmatisches Beispiel der I. Weltkrieg bis heute gilt, in der deutschsprachigen Kriegsprosa beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Texte nicht nur auf die heute dem Kanon der Kriegsliteratur zugerechneten Texte (Remarque, Renn, Koeppen etc.). Mit einbezogen werden Texte, die aufgrund ihrer Verbreitung (Plüschow, Flex, Richthofen, Zöberlein), ihrer kontroversen Rezeption (Carossa, Vogel) oder der vermeintlich historisch-’authentischen’ Darstellung (Schlachten des Weltkrieges) zur Diskussion um das ‘wahre’ Bild des Krieges in der Weimarer Republik und bis in die Gegenwart beigetragen haben. Die Textauswahl strebt darüber hinaus Repräsentativität an, indem auch Texte von Autorinnen (Adrienne Thomas), eine Briefsammlung (Witkop) sowie ein Bild/Text-Band (Schauwecker) einbezogen werden sowie nahezu alle in der Weimarer Republik vertretenen politischen Richtungen berücksichtigt wurden.

Bis heute haben aber die Fragen, mit denen dieses katastrophale Ereignis alle Deutschen konfrontiert, nicht an Bedeutung und Aktualität verloren. Vielmehr fordert das öffentliche Gedächtnis mit jedem Generationswechsel neue Bilder von diesem Krieg. Im Rückblick auf den Zeitraum seit 1945 läßt sich ein Zyklus von Erinnern, Verstummen und erneutem Erinnern ausmachen, der bereits dreifach durchlaufen worden ist. Insofern ist der Umgang mit dem Thema in den deutschen Medien gleich nach Kriegsende auch für die Gegenwart aufschlußreich. Deutungen und Formen des Gedenkens, die heute praktiziert werden, haben selber inzwischen eine Geschichte. Mehrfach glaubte man bereits in beiden Teilen Deutschlands, daß die Schuldfrage gelöst sei und die Kriegserfahrung bewältigt. Jedesmal stellte sich heraus, daß die Deutschen noch immer in der Schuld sind, nicht nur aus der Perspektive ihrer europäischen Nachbarn. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. Gefragt wird, wie in der Literatur, in der Presse, im Fernsehen und Film in den 40er und 50er Jahren mit dem Krieg umgegangen worden ist, welche Bilder davon die Literatur, die Presse, Fernsehen, Film und Hörspiel anzubieten hatten und welche Tendenzen sich dabei in den beiden deutschen Staaten, in Österreich, Polen und Frankreich nachweisen lassen. Eine Reflexion auf die neunziger Jahre macht das Thema spannend, denn dadurch wird den Bildern vom Krieg, die im wiedervereinigten Deutschland im Umlauf sind, ihr Ort im Zyklus zugewiesen: Ein Beitrag zur wieder nötig gewordenen Orientierung.

It considers how children at this time were brought up and educated to accept unquestioningly National Socialist ideology, and thus questions the possibility of a traditional naive perspective on these events. Authors as diverse as Günter Grass, Siegfried Lenz, and Christa Wolf, together with many less well-known writers, have all used this perspective, and this raises the question as to why it is such a popular means of confronting the enormity of the Third Reich. This study asks whether this perspective is an evasive strategy, a means of gaining new insights into the period, or a means of discovering a new language which had not been tainted by Nazism. This raises and addresses issues central to a post-war aesthetic in German writing.
