Book A First German Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First German Book Classic Reprint written by Charles A. Schlegel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First German Book A long experience in teaching modern languages, in Europe and Ameriea, has taught me that a correct knowledge of any language, or even practieal ability in speaking and writing it, ean never be acquired without some grammatical system followed in studying it; but I have also learned that every system, however thorough and correct it may be, must be based on the pupil's eapacity and intelligence, and supported by practical exercises. Thus, in preparing this first german Boox, limited to the most fundamental forms of the language following each other in their natural order, and to a vocabulary and phraseology within the Sphere of a beginner, it has been my constant aim to combine. Correctness and thoroughness with a simplicity and cleamess of the instruction and explanations, that even the weakest pupil will not fail to gradually acquire a knowledge of the subject. Miss Frida von Unwerth, of the Ethical Culture School, New York, read the proof-sheets and prepared the general vocab ularies. To Miss Anna B. Eckstein, Principal of the Modern School of Languages, Boston, I owe heartiest thanks for her cor rections, criticisms, and suggestions, especially in connection with the proof-reading of the exercises. Her thorough knowledge of her own language, combined with her insight as a teacher, has made this help invaluable. Book Elementary German Reader

Download or read book Elementary German Reader written by Ovando Byron Super and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary German Reader: With Notes and Vocabulary This book will accordingly be found to contain more easy reading than any other book of its class. Many German Readers begin well enough, but the average pupil's powers of acquisition do not increase in the same ratio with the increase in difficulty of the selections, and he is, therefore, likely to find the latter part of the book discouragingly difficult and, consequently, uninteresting. If Lessing's Fables or Grimm's Tales are proper reading for a pupil to-day, it is scarcely probable that he will, in a few weeks, be able to read with profit and enjoyment selections from Humboldt's Kosmos or Kant's Ethics, yet this seems to be the theory of the compilers of some books of this kind. A more rational proceeding would seem to be to have a larger quantity of easy reading, and as the pupil's knowledge increased, he could take longer lessons and so be encouraged by being able to observe his own improvement. Inasmuch as this book is intended primarily for the school and not for the college, it does not profess to contain specimens of German literature. Like Hamlet, the average beginner reads only words, words, words, and graces of style and even beautiful thoughts are nu appreciated on account of the difficulty experienced in getting at the meaning of individual words. A study of these things should be relegated to a later stage of the student's career, after grammar and vocabulary have ceased to require constant attention. N 0 authors' names are attached to the prose selections, because, in the first place, they have been taken from a great variety of sources, and the original writer was not, in every case, known. In the second place, even in familiar selections, great liberties have sometimes been taken with the text, so that the original author cannot properly be held responsible for what is said or for the manner in which it is said. For most Of the historical selections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First German Reader Never let a wrong pronunciation pass muster. Do not assign a lesson unless it has been fully explained and prepared in class by the living voice. The questions as laid down in our book are intended for the student, to insure proper review at home. Such review may be oral or written. Of course, these questions do not limit the in dividual teacher in any way and are merely suggestive. But they do outline the work of the pupil definitely so that the matter in hand shall be thoroughly dealt with and mastered. Answers should always be given in complete sentences. We have added fifteen extracts for supplementary reading. They, in turn, are arranged in order of grammatical and syn tactic difficulty. The melodies of the ten songs given in the body of the book, as well as five additional ones, are printed separately. The Grammatical Tables furnish only the absolute essentials of German accidence in systematic arrangement, and are reprinted from our basic book. Yielding to repeated requests, we are giving an abstract of German grammar with brief explanations in German. This abstract contains a set of grammatical terms in German for practical use. We have purposely given the preference to Latin nomenclature since it is more widely employed in German higher schools, and Since it is more readily intelligible to our American pupils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in German Having used several german-english grammars, one after an other, without finding any of them satisfactory, the author finally concluded to compile a book which, given into the hands of his pupils, would enable him to teach according to the method and system he wished to follow. In doing this, he had no ambition for striving after originality, an attempt which will, in writing a grammar or a similar schoolbook; always prove a failure, unless the writer is a genius; he simply endeavored to unite such principles and ideas as he acknowledged as rational and practical, and to embody them in a book suitable for be ginners. Book A German Reader and Theme Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book A German Reader and Theme Book Classic Reprint written by Calvin Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Reader and Theme-Book It is not expected by the authors that any one pupil or any one class will do all the exercises provided in the Reader. We do not advise anything of the kind. To at tempt that would be to retard unduly the pace of the reading itself, which is after all the important considera tion. What is intended is to provide a quantity of good material for drill, which can be used variously by teachers, according to their individual preferences, or according to the circumstances such as the size and maturity of classes. Those who prefer to conduct the class-room drill in German will make large use of the Fragen and ignore the Themes, except for written work at home or for review. Those who instruct classes of considerable size can use both Fragen and Themes - or portions of either, selected and distributed at pleasure either for colloquial practice or for exercises in writing German. In the beginning the preparation of the Fragen will mean little more than the memorizing of the answers from the German text. As soon as possible, however, this process should be replaced by real freie Reproduktion, and for this reason the set Fragen are discontinued after the seventeenth selection. Book Revolutionary Theater and the Classical Heritage

Download or read book Revolutionary Theater and the Classical Heritage written by Michael David Richardson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the work of three prominent proletarian-revolutionary dramatists at the end of the Weimar Republic. The work of Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Wolf, and Gustav von Wangenheim is looked at against the backdrop of debates among Marxist intellectuals and artists. Through a discussion of theatrical theory and close readings of individual plays, this work examines the authors' unique aesthetics and their enactment of a critical appropriation of the German literary heritage. It also investigates their attempts to transform the audience's relationship to the theatrical production from a passive-receptive to an active-critical one. This volume offers insights into larger questions of political and cultural continuity that characterized the Weimar and the postwar periods.

Book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England 1760 1860 Volume 2

Download or read book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England 1760 1860 Volume 2 written by John Boening and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.
