Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long Africa has presented a conundrum as its profound reception of the Bible is juxtaposed with a public life that often seems devoid of biblical values. In this highly original analysis Mzee Hermann Mvula boldly seeks to bridge this ugly chasm by showing what biblical teaching can mean for many different aspects of social and political life. —Kenneth R. Ross,Professor of Theology and Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Zomba Theological University

Download or read book A Jewish Public Theology written by Abraham Unger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Jewish Public Theology draws from Halakhah, Jewish law, to address some of the most searing current policy issues. Abraham Unger examines how Jewish tradition speaks to globalization and its attendant political and economic cleavages. Classical Jewish thought sits on a perch outside of the defining parameters of the global political conversation and as such cannot be pigeon holed as populist, leftist, or rightist. Judaism was born in antiquity and therefore predates by millennia these current ideological biases. That intellectual distance, both due to the long arc of Jewish history, and outsider minority status as a tradition, allows for a critical distance. Unger explores how the Jewish tradition compels the living out of a public policy framework through the forging of equitable communities using arguments that go beyond political orthodoxies. In this socially fragile era, the possibility of that message offers a hopeful discourse of significant possibility for all humankind.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Public Taxation in Medieval Europe written by Denis Menjot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the twelfth century, taxation increasingly became an essential component of medieval society in most parts of Europe. The state-building process and relations between princes and their subject cities or between citizens and their rulers were deeply shaped by fiscal practices. Although medieval taxation has produced many publications over the past decades there remains no synthesis of this important subject. This volume provides a comprehensive overview on a European scale and suggests new paths of inquiry. It examines the fiscal systems and practices of medieval Europe, including essential themes such as medieval fiscal theory and the power to tax; royal and urban taxation; and Church taxation. It goes on to survey the entire European continent, as well as including comparative chapters on the non-European medieval world, exploring questions on how taxation developed and functioned; what kinds of problems authorities encountered assessing their fiscal power; and the circulation of fiscal cultures and practices across cities and kingdoms. The book also provides a glossary of the most important types of medieval taxes, giving an essential definition of key terms cited in the chapters. The Routledge Handbook of Public Taxation in Medieval Europe will appeal to a large audience, from seasoned scholars who need a comprehensive synthesis, to students and younger scholars in search of an overview of this critical subject.

Download or read book Decolonizing the Theological Curriculum in an Online Age written by Chimera Nyika and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second annual conference of the Theological Society of Malawi was held at the historic Ekwendeni Campus of the University of Livingstonia from 14 to 16 September 2021. It took up the urgent theme of the decolonization of the theological curriculum. Though Malawi has been an independent country for 58 years, coloniality still stalks the land. This book calls theologians to take a lead in decolonization, while navigating the educational task in an online age. With more than twenty institutions teaching theology at tertiary level in Malawi, and now united in the Theological Society of Malawi, there is huge potential to learn from each other in developing the theological curriculum in the country. While the primary audience is unashamedly a Malawian one, this book might also prove relevant in other contexts where there is a reckoning with past and present experience of colonialism. The book is a call to action and is published in the hope that it will have lasting impact on the teaching and learning of theology in Malawi and beyond.
