Book Detroit s Hidden Channels

Download or read book Detroit s Hidden Channels written by Karen L. Marrero and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French-Indigenous families were a central force in shaping Detroit’s history. Detroit’s Hidden Channels: The Power of French-Indigenous Families in the Eighteenth Century examines the role of these kinship networks in Detroit’s development as a site of singular political and economic importance in the continental interior. Situated where Anishinaabe, Wendat, Myaamia, and later French communities were established and where the system of waterways linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico narrowed, Detroit’s location was its primary attribute. While the French state viewed Detroit as a decaying site of illegal activities, the influence of the French-Indigenous networks grew as members diverted imperial resources to bolster an alternative configuration of power relations that crossed Indigenous and Euro-American nations. Women furthered commerce by navigating a multitude of gender norms of their nations, allowing them to defy the state that sought to control them by holding them to European ideals of womanhood. By the mid-eighteenth century, French-Indigenous families had become so powerful, incoming British traders and imperial officials courted their favor. These families would maintain that power as the British imperial presence splintered on the eve of the American Revolution.

This book was released on 2005-10-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sterling Township, located about 18 miles northeast of Detroit, was first settled after the Erie Canal was opened. The rich soil, relatively flat land, and the vital Clinton River attracted pioneer and immigrant families who arrived to establish farmsteads. The first influx of immigrants came mainly from the British Isles, and by the 1870s, German families had flocked to the area, raising dairy cattle and establishing farms. Belgians, arriving in the early 1900s, developed truck farming—growing fruits and vegetables to sell every week at the farmers’ market in Detroit. Farm culture prevailed until the 1950s, when large industrial plants began moving in, bringing with them workers and a need for housing and city services. Sterling Township became the city of Sterling Heights in 1968, and this collection of photographs will showcase the families and the way of life in the early days of this community, a historic community that is now the fourth largest city in Michigan.

Excerpt: ...and his mother Margaret (Allen) Gray were born in Glasgow, Scotland. They came to America in 1855, and took up their residence at Utica, New York. From there, in 1856, they removed to Hamilton, Canada, and here, on August nth of the same year, the subject of this sketch was born. In 1863 the family came to Detroit, and owing to the number of children, the boys were obliged to shift for themselves at an early age, and William was deprived of any extended schooling. He at first engaged in the manufacture of cigar boxes, and continued in this occupation for several years, and then went to learn the trade of carriage-body making at John Patton's carriage establishment. The faithful and diligent manner in which he applied himself to his trade made him a thorough workman at the.completion of his apprenticeship, and in 1882 he entered into a partnership with his brother, John A. Gray, who had already acquired a large general smithing trade, and together they engaged in the manufacture and repairing of wagons and carriages. In 1886 the firm was reorganized and incorporated under the name of Gray Brothers. The high quality of their work has brought them a large trade, and they now give employment to between thirty and forty persons. They are also engaged in other manufacturing enterprises, amongst which is the manufacture of wire nails. Mr. Gray is a thorough master of his trade, energetic and upright, and his perseverance, industry and abilities have raised him to an enviable position. His education has been largely acquired through contact with the world. He is a believer in the tenets of the Presbyterian church and is independent in politics, although he inclines to the Republican party. He is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Our Yesterdays is an accurate account based on extensive historical research when initially published in 1969, and is written in such a style as to make interesting and historical snapshot of the history of the city of Detroit. The authors recount the founding of the town by the French, control by the British, and growth as an American city. These episodes are recounted in the words and deeds of the people who lived and worked here, men like Judge Woodward, Father Gabriel Richard, and Governor Lewis Cass. The reader meets, among others, old General Hull surrendering the city to the British General Brock, dread cholera epidemics killing hundreds of residents, a man named Vernor making up a batch of excellent ginger ale to sell in his drug store, and Charles King building and driving the city's first motor car. Here are also accounts of the expansion of the automobile industry, the days of the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, Great Depression, World Wars I and II, and the city of the 1950s and 1960s. This is the story of a great city; a story of past deeds, present problems, and future hopes. But more important, this is a story by and about the people of Detroit, for it is the people that have made this city great.

Download or read book Detroit and World Trade written by Thomas Laurence Munger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Detroit and World-Trade In the succeeding chapters of this small volume an attempt will be made to outline a picture, as complete as possible within certain limits, of the industrial and commercial development of Detroit and contiguous territory from the earliest days to the present, with particular reference to the part played in such development by transportation facilities. Indeed, the basic economic law which will govern every consideration may be summed up in the phrase, "transportation governs production," whether that production be industrial, agricultural or some other kind. Of course it will be unnecessary to do more than touch upon the early history of this development, and it will be done only that we may have an historical basis upon which to forecast future developments. A majority of the statistics which will be offered, after those included in the brief historical sketch, will cover industrial and commercial activities during 1919, which was the period of transition from war to peace conditions, so far as peace conditions can be said to have returned. It is believed, however, that these figures will give a fair idea of general conditions as they will exist for some time to come, and will serve, together with the historical data, as a firm foundation in forecasting conditions still farther in the future.
