Book Determining Individual Tree Shade Length

Download or read book Determining Individual Tree Shade Length written by Kathleen Geier-Hayes and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shade may be critical through the summer for conifer regeneration survival on warm, dry sites. Shadow lengths vary by latitude, aspect, & slope; southerly aspects have shorter shadows than northerly aspects at the same time. Differently shaped trees also produce different shadow lengths. This guide provides silviculturists with a method for determining tree shadow lengths in a straight line from the tree's base to the shadow tip from southern Utah to northern Idaho for May 10 through Oct. 11 on different slopes, aspects, & for two tree shapes. Charts & tables.

Book User s Guide to Fish Habitat

Download or read book User s Guide to Fish Habitat written by C. Kerry Overton and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This user's guide and reference document describes the physical features of the Salmon River Basin, Idaho, stream channels that represent "natural conditions" for fish habitat-that is, streams that have not been influenced by major human disturbances. The data base was created to assist biologists and resource managers. It describes resource conditions that can be achieved through management objectives."

Book Crown condition Classification

Download or read book Crown condition Classification written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts a national inventory of forests across the United States. A systematic subset of permanent inventory plots in 38 States is currently sampled every year for numerous forest health indicators. One of these indicators, crown-condition classification, is designed to estimate tree crown dimensions and assess the impact of crown stressors. The indicator features eight tree-level field measurements in addition to variables traditionally measured in conjunction with FIA inventories: vigor class, uncompacted live crown ratio, crown light exposure, crown position, crown density, crown dieback, foliage transparency, and crown diameter. Indicators of crown health derived from the crown data are intended for analyses at the State, regional, and national levels, and contribute to the core tabular output in standard FIA reports. Crown-condition measurements were originally implemented as part of the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) Program in 1990. Except for crown diameter, these measurements were continued when the FIA Program assumed responsibility for FHM plot-based detection monitoring in 2000. This report describes in detail the data collection and analytical techniques recommended for crown-condition classification.

Book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes

Download or read book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes written by Stephen S. Sackett and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and cambium temperatures must be known to ascertain certain effects of prescribed fires on trees. Thermocouple-based systems were devised for measuring soil and cambium temperatures during prescribed fires. The systems, which incorporate both commercially available and custom components, perform three basic functions: data collection, data retrieval, and data translation. Although the systems and procedures for using them were designed for research purposes, they could be adapted for monitoring operational prescribed fires.

Download or read book Growth and Defence in Plants written by R. Matyssek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants use resources, i.e. carbon, nutrients, water and energy, either for growth or to defend themselves from biotic and abiotic stresses. This volume provides a timely understanding of resource allocation and its regulation in plants, linking the molecular with biochemical and physiological-level processes. Ecological scenarios covered include competitors, pathogens, herbivores, mycorrhizae, soil microorganisms, carbon dioxide/ozone regimes, nitrogen and light availabilities. The validity of the “Growth-Differentiation Balance Hypothesis” is examined and novel theoretical concepts and approaches to modelling plant resource allocation are discussed. The results presented can be applied in plant breeding and engineering, as well as in resource-efficient stand management in agriculture and forestry.
