Book Components of Angling Mortality for Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides at Sam Rayburn Reservoir with Implications for Alternative Length Limits and Tournament Impacts

Download or read book Components of Angling Mortality for Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides at Sam Rayburn Reservoir with Implications for Alternative Length Limits and Tournament Impacts written by Jules L. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largemouth bass (LMB) Micropterus salmoides fishery at Sam Rayburn Reservoir is managed with a 356-mm minimum length limit (MLL). In 2001, 47% of anglers favored more restrictive LMB MLLs, assuming a resulting increase of fish. In 2003, 6,021 LMB were tagged to estimate total annual angling mortality (TAM) and explore potential benefits of more restrictive MLLs via population modeling. Due to popularity of tournament angling and high voluntary release rate at Sam Rayburn Reservoir, TAM estimates included non-tournament harvest, tournament mortality, and hooking mortality. Catch and harvest of tagged fish was estimated via creel sampling to avoid non-reporting uncertainty, adjusted for recruitment and tag loss, and expanded to estimate total annual tagged fish catch and harvest. Tournament and hooking mortality was simulated at rates of 10, 30, and 50% and 5, 10, and 15%, respectively. Population loss from non-tournament harvest was 6--14% and tournament and hooking mortality simulations both resulted in losses of 1--6%. (Abstract shortened.).

Book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging and well-illustrated primer to the Upper Mississippi River presents the basic natural and human history of this magnificent waterway. Immortal River is written for the educated lay-person who would like to know more about the river's history and the forces that shape as well as threaten it today. It melds complex information from the fields of geology, ecology, geography, anthropology, and history into a readable, chronological story that spans some 500 million years of the earth's history. Like the Mississippi itself, Immortal River often leaves the main channel to explore the river's backwaters, floodplain, and drainage basin. The book's focus is the Upper Mississippi, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Cairo, Illinois. But it also includes information about the river's headwaters in northern Minnesota and about the Lower Mississippi from Cairo south to the river's mouth ninety miles below New Orleans. It offers an understanding of the basic geology underlying the river's landscapes, ecology, environmental problems, and grandeur.

Download or read book Immersion written by Abbie Gascho Landis and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbie Gascho Landis brings readers to a hotbed of mussel diversity, the American Southeast, to seek mussels where they eat, procreate, and, too often, perish. Accompanied often by her husband, a mussel scientist, and her young children, she learned to see mussels on the creekbed, to tell a spectaclecase from a pigtoe, and to worry what vanishing mussels--70 percent of North American species are imperiled--will mean for humans and wildlife alike. Landis shares this journey, traveling from perilous river surveys to dry streambeds and into laboratories where endangered mussels are raised one precious life at a time. Mussels have much to teach us about the health of our watersheds if we step into the creek and take a closer look at their lives. In the tradition of writers like Terry Tempest Williams and Sy Montgomery, Landis gracefully chronicles these untold stories with a veterinarian's careful eye and the curiosity of a naturalist.--
