Book Determination of Gas Temperatures from Laser Raman Scattering

Download or read book Determination of Gas Temperatures from Laser Raman Scattering written by Jack A. Salzman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted on the feasibility of using Raman scattered laser light to measure local gas temperatures. Temperature error predictions were made based on the statistics of the scattering process and Raman spectral theory. Methods were developed for the calculation of temperature measurement accuracies as a function of Raman signal for different spectral line ratio schemes. The results of these theoretical calculations were compared with experimental rotational Raman data obtained from a laboratory-constructed Raman spectrophotometer. Nitrogen was used as a gas sample for a range of controlled temperatures from 253 to 313 K and pressures from 0. 5 to 5.0 atmospheres.

These experimental data consisted of Raman spectra of air obtained for temperatures ranging from 243 to 313 K at a pressure of 1 atmosphere. The use of selected lines resulted in an experimental accuracy of or - 13 K (-5 percent).

Book Shock tube Diagnostics Utilizing Laser Raman Spectroscopy

Download or read book Shock tube Diagnostics Utilizing Laser Raman Spectroscopy written by Anthony A. Boiarski and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser Raman scattering technique shows potential as a diagnostic method for determining the chemical and thermodynamic state of high-temperature gases. To investigate the utility of this technique for shock-tube diagnostics, and to validate the method at known elevated temperatures, vibrational Raman intensities were measured behind an incident shock wave. Intensity history data through the wave front, vibrational excitation times of oxygen in air, along with temperature and density measurements for oxygen and nitrogen in air were obtained over a range of postshock conditions. The measured densities and temperatures were found to be in good agreement with shock-wave theory. An excitation time measurement also agreed well with shock-tube data obtained with other diagnostic methods. In general, the results indicated that the Raman scattering technique was accurate at elevated temperatures and should prove useful in determining the thermochemical state of gases in continuous flows as well as in shock tubes and other impulse facilities.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases" held in the Hotel Golf Mar, Vimeiro, near Torres Vedras, Portugal from 30 March to 10 April 1987. The objective of the meeting was to take stock of the recent technological developments involving lasers and to assess their impact on spectroscopy. The whole range of wavelengths from the far infrared through to the extreme ultraviolet was covered. In addition, specific applications to both atoms and molecules were described. Indeed, one of the most successful and pleasant aspects of the Institute was the joint participation of atomic physicists and molecular spectro scopists, who meet all too rarely these days. The Institute also succeeded in covering a wide time span from the very earliest days of lasers to some of the very latest developments in both lasers and their applications to spectroscopy. There were 14 invited lecturers, giving a total of 40 lectures, and 89 other participants at the Institute. Each of the invited lecturers has contributed a chapter to this volume. In addition, on Thursday 2nd April a special one-day session was held in the Chemistry Department at the University of Coimbra to mark the retirement of Professor Dr. F.

Book excerpt: The Laser Raman Workshop on the r"eas urement of Gas Properti es i sone of aseries of occasional meetings organized in an informal workshop format through the stimulation of Project SQUID, Office of Naval Research. This workshop is the second to be organized on gas-phase applications of Raman scattering. Both Raman workshops were supported by Project SQUID, ONR, and the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The first Raman Workshop was held at the AVCO Everett Research Laboratory, Everett, Massachusetts, with their co-sponsorship in January 1972 under the chairmanship of D. A. Leonard. The present meeting was co-sponsored by the General Electric Research and Development Center, and held at their facility in Schenectady, New York. We are grateful to Project SQUID, AFAPL, and GE for their generous financial support of this Workshop, and to Project SQUID for underwriting the publication costs of the Proceedings. As is always the case for successful meetings, many people contributed substantially to the organization and execution of this workshop. Professor Robert Goulard supported, aided, and encouraged us in the most helpful ways, and we are indebted to him. We received further valuable support and assistance from Dr. Ralph Roberts, Director, and Mr. James R. Patton, Jr., of the Power Branch, Office of Naval Research; from Dr. William H. Heiser, Chief Scientist of the Aero Propulsion Laboratory; and from Dr. James M.

Book Ultrabroadband Coherent Anti Stokes Raman Scattering for Gas Temperature and Concentration Measurements

Download or read book Ultrabroadband Coherent Anti Stokes Raman Scattering for Gas Temperature and Concentration Measurements written by Yang Ran and published by . This book was released on 2021* with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work was to investigate and extend the capability of the ultrabroadband CARS technique for temperature and concentration measurements for multiple species and a wide range of practical applications, especially for gasification diagnostics. Practical gasification or combustion devices mainly work under high pressures. Therefore, a sufficiently short probe pulse (~2 ps) was utilized for collision-free measurements. In order to simultaneously excite multiple gas species with Raman shifts up to ~4200 cm-1, a ~7 fs pump/Stokes beam was used. Both beams are generated by a 200 kHz BBO-based OPCPA system. Based on this configuration, the experimental methods and the theoretical framework for temperature and concentration determination were developed. The accuracy and precision of this technique was at first determined in a gas oven with controlled temperatures and gas flows. In this way, temperature measurements at temperatures from 295 K up to ~1300 K were performed with excellent accuracies within ~4%. The CO detection limit in CO2 atmosphere was extended to 0.5% at room temperature and 2% at 1073 K at a pressure of 1.4 bar. Temperature and concentration measurements were further extended to 20 bar and 10 bar, respectively. The influence of the ultrabroadband spectrum on the excitation efficiencies was investigated in detail. Subsequently, ultrabroadband CARS technique was applied for the first time for coal gasification investigations. Successful CARS analytical results were obtained even for the gasification process of a single coal particle.

Book Laser Raman Flow field Diagnostics of Two Large Hypersonic Test Facilities

Download or read book Laser Raman Flow field Diagnostics of Two Large Hypersonic Test Facilities written by W. D. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-Raman scattering has been utilized to discover nonequilibrium N2 vibrational levels in a continuous, resistance-heated wind tunnel (Tunnel C) and in an arc-heated wind tunnel (Tunnel F). Vibrational temperatures of up to two times the bulk reservoir temperature have been measured in the Tunnel F free stream. A double-diaphragm device for delay of the Tunnel F nozzle expansion was found to significantly reduce the vibrational temperature level. In tunnel C, the vibrational temperatures were found to be dependent upon the water vapor concentration in the flow. It is hypothesized that water vapor-induced de-excitation of the vibrationally excited nitrogen molecules results in a significant rise in local static temperature and corresponding reduction in Mach number.
