Book Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small Size Chevron Notched Specimens

Download or read book Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small Size Chevron Notched Specimens written by Yevgeny Deryugin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method is proposed to determine fracture toughness of structural materials according to the test data of non-standard small-size chevron-notched specimens. During the tests, loading diagrams and photographic images of the specimens taken in time intervals are obtained. The crack length is measured in the process of its initiation and propagation. The analytical expressions are obtained being based and derived from the constitutive equations of engineering fracture mechanics to determine the crack-driving force (specific fracture energy) and the stress intensity factor. The method allows us to exclude the periodic unloading of the specimen applied under standard test conditions to determine the change in specimen compliance, which is taken into account in constitutive equations at crack length increase. All necessary calculation parameters are determined according to the experimental data. The method allows us to certify fracture toughness of the material without restrictions regarding the amount of plastic deformation and in front of the crack tip and in the specimen as a whole. The examples are given to calculate the fracture toughness criteria for a number of structural materials characterized by the ability to plastic deformation and by the Young's modulus value.

Book Rock Fracture Toughness Determination with Chevron Notched and Straight Through Notched Three Point Bend Round Bar Specimens

Download or read book Rock Fracture Toughness Determination with Chevron Notched and Straight Through Notched Three Point Bend Round Bar Specimens written by W. Qizhi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chevron-notched and straight-through-notched three-point bend round bar specimens were used to test fracture toughness of a Chongqing limestone. Comparable values were obtained from these two kinds of specimens, but the chevron-notched specimens had the merits of easiness for deducing and detecting overloading, less the possibility for deviation of crack growth from notch plane, and a included nonlinear correction factor in fracture toughness calculation. However, there was some size effect for chevron-notched specimens; the test values increased with increment in crack length and diameter.

Book An Investigation on the Method for Determination of Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials with Chevron Notched Short Rod and Short Bar Specimens

Download or read book An Investigation on the Method for Determination of Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials with Chevron Notched Short Rod and Short Bar Specimens written by W. Chizhi and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By means of an expression proposed by the authors, dimensionless critical crack lengths and stress-intensity factor coefficients for chevron-notched short-rod specimens were calculated based on the straight-through crack assumption. Calculation was also done for chevron-notched short-bar specimens in an extended range including short bar with rectangular cross section. Three configurations of chevron-notched specimens were used to test fracture toughness KIc for eight metallic materials. Some results were compared with values from standard compact tension and three-point bend specimens. Good agreement was obtained when both stable crack extension and a very small plasticity factor were achieved. The role of load-displacement plot is emphasized. A discussion about some specimen parameters such as dimensionless initial crack length and width to half height (or width to radius) ratio is given.

Book New Formulae for Determining Fracture Toughness of a Wide Range of Different Materials with Chevron Notched Short Rod and Short Bar Specimens

Download or read book New Formulae for Determining Fracture Toughness of a Wide Range of Different Materials with Chevron Notched Short Rod and Short Bar Specimens written by XC. Yin and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New formulae are presented to re-evaluate plain strain fracture toughness of brittle and ductile materials from previous works on chevron-notched specimens. The fracture toughness KIm from the new formulae agree with values of KIC from ASTM specimens. The KIm measurements are successful in tests of tough aluminum when the fracture toughness exceeds 40 MPa . m1 2 and steel 20G with the plasticity factor p approach 1. It is found that the valid specimen size could be smaller than 1.25(KIC/?S)2 for aluminum alloys, and even less than 0.1(KIC/?S) for steel 20G when the KIm formulae are used.

Book Fracture Toughness Determination with the Use of Miniaturized Specimens

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Determination with the Use of Miniaturized Specimens written by Jan Dzugan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics has been used for decades nowadays, and methods have been well established in the community especially for standard-sized specimens. As it was mainly developed for large structure assessment against the brittle failure, standardized specimens are of large size at present. However, in many cases, these standard specimens are not possible to apply due to size requirements of the available experimental material or the size of the component considered. These can be cases of residual service life assessment of in-service components, local properties determination (e.g., across weld), anisotropy determination and assessment of mechanical properties of newly developed materials under laboratory conditions (e.g., SPD processed materials, et cetera). Therefore, development of new methods using significantly smaller specimens has to be carried out, and procedures using smaller-sized specimens together with their validity limits and relation to standardly obtained results have to be provided in order to provide solution for wide applications.

Book A Procedure for Fracture Toughness Testing Using a Chevron Notched Crack Arrest Specimen

Download or read book A Procedure for Fracture Toughness Testing Using a Chevron Notched Crack Arrest Specimen written by RJ. Bonenberger and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new chevron-notched crack-arrest (CNCA) specimen has been developed for determining the fracture toughness of metals in a more cost-effective manner. The specimen is a hybrid design that incorporates features from the standard KIc and KIc specimens. Details of the specimen geometry and associated test procedures are described. Strain gages record the stress state in the specimen, and a clip gage measures the crack mouth opening displacement. The method for extracting arrest and initiation toughness from the measured data is presented. Fracture experiments using the CNCA specimen ware conducted to determine Ka and Kc for A533-B reactor grade steel at 23°C. The Ka and Kc results from this study were consistent with similar data established for the same material by other-researchers. A fractographic analysis identified cleavage as the dominant failure mode during crack propagation, with a conversion to ductile tearing just before arrest.

Book Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness of a C MN Steel Using Small Notched Tensile Specimens

Download or read book Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness of a C MN Steel Using Small Notched Tensile Specimens written by S. Carassou and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness testing of irradiated or aged materials is often limited due to the lack of available material. Subsize Charpy, small CT specimens or small punch test is generally used to overcome this limitation. In this paper, a method based on small notched tensile specimen testing is presented and used for evaluation of fracture toughness properties of a C-Mn steel with a large inclusions content. Specimens are cut in the radial and circumferential directions from a C-Mn steel pipe and tested at 100°C. The diameter of the smallest specimens is 3.6 mm. The average strain at fracture and finite elements simulation of the notched specimens are used to determine the critical values of a local ductile fracture criterion. These values are subsequently used in conjunction with finite element simulations to predict the fracture toughness of the material in different orientations. The predictions are compared with fracture toughness measured on 1⁄2 T, 1 T and 2 T-CT specimens.
