Book Determination of Activity Parameters in Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans Strains as Criteria for Mineral Leaching Efficiency UP M 589

Download or read book Determination of Activity Parameters in Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans Strains as Criteria for Mineral Leaching Efficiency UP M 589 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial leaching of sulfide ores using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is an important process for the extraction of economically valuable metals from ores not amenable to traditional methods, with the advantage of not releasing the oxidized sulfur into the atmosphere. In spite of its great potential, the use of bacterial leaching has been limited, mainly because of the relatively slow rate and low concentration of metals extracted into solution. This report presents the results of tests using a number of strains of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans on growth and activity, including the effects of metals (Cu, Zn and other inhibitory metals often released from sulfide ores), to establish criteria essential for the selection of strains best suited for effective leaching.

Book Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms

Download or read book Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of OECD Biosafety consensus documents is to identify elements of scientific information used in the environmental safety/ risk assessment of transgenic organisms which are common to OECD member countries. This is intended to encourage information sharing and prevent duplication of effort among countries. These two volumes bring together for the first time these Biosafety consensus documents in order for these documents to be distributed more widely and utilized more easily by intended users, such as applicants for commercialization, regulators in national authorities and researchers.

Book Iron Oxidation by Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans

Download or read book Iron Oxidation by Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans written by Sun Ki Kang and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bacterium most frequently used in microbial leaching processes and studies is Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Applications of this bacterium include the treatment of coal, low-grade ores and industrial solid wastes for the solubilization of pyrite and other trace metals associated with sulfides. The goal of this study was the development of a standard procedure that can be used for screening or comparing various strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Measuring the oxidation of ferrous iron is a quick and simple method for predicting the relative effectiveness of a given strain of T. ferrooxidans in microbial leaching operations. When conducting experiments for the relative determination of bacterial activity, 9K medium with a low initial soluble ferrous iron concentration and a pH of approximately 2.0 is recommended. Also it is important to begin with the same ferric iron concentration in bacterial cultures, while minimizing the amount of precipitated iron. The effect of inoculum size on the maximum oxidation rate of ferrous iron is negligible; however, lag time can be reduced by using larger inocula.

Download or read book Potential Genetic Engineering of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans to Optimize the Leaching of Mineral Values written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer search of the literature from 1972 to the present, plus secondaryreferences, for the potential for improving microbial leaching of metalsulfides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Threeareas for genetic engineering were targeted: tolerance to heavy metals;tolerance to low temperature; and increased rates of metal sulfide oxidation.
