Book Determination and Simulation of Kinematic Parameters in the Qweak Experiment

Download or read book Determination and Simulation of Kinematic Parameters in the Qweak Experiment written by Rachel C. Taverner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qweak Experiment aims to measure the weak charge of the proton. In order to obtain the required level of precision in the final result, we must calculate corrections to the momentum transfer, Q^2, in the scattering event. We simulate the experiment in GEANT4 and compare the simulations to the experimental data. In my project, I was responsible for creating comparison plots for Q^2, the scattering angle, theta, and the scattered energy, E'. We found that E' had some major discrepancies between experiment and simulation. After verifying that the simulations were implementing energy loss processes properly, we found that E' shows an octant-dependence consistent with a tilt to the rotator holding the vertical drift chambers.

Book Advanced Computing in Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Advanced Computing in Electron Microscopy written by Earl J. Kirkland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and revised edition of a classic work provides a summary of methods for numerical computation of high resolution conventional and scanning transmission electron microscope images. At the limits of resolution, image artifacts due to the instrument and the specimen interaction can complicate image interpretation. Image calculations can help the user to interpret and understand high resolution information in recorded electron micrographs. The book contains expanded sections on aberration correction, including a detailed discussion of higher order (multipole) aberrations and their effect on high resolution imaging, new imaging modes such as ABF (annular bright field), and the latest developments in parallel processing using GPUs (graphic processing units), as well as updated references. Beginning and experienced users at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level will find the book to be a unique and essential guide to the theory and methods of computation in electron microscopy.

Book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei

Download or read book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei written by Hans Volker Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.

Book Atomic Scale Dynamics at Surfaces

Download or read book Atomic Scale Dynamics at Surfaces written by Giorgio Benedek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental advances in helium atom scattering spectroscopy over the last forty years have allowed the measurement of surface phonon dispersion curves of more than 200 different crystal surfaces and overlayers of insulators, semiconductors and metals. The first part of the book presents, at a tutorial level, the fundamental concepts and methods in surface lattice dynamics, and the theory of atom-surface interaction and inelastic scattering in their various approximations, up to the recent electron-phonon theory of helium atom scattering from conducting surfaces. The second part of the book, after introducing the experimentalist to He-atom spectrometers and the rich phenomenology of helium atom scattering from corrugated surfaces, illustrates the most significant experimental results on the surface phonon dispersion curves of various classes of insulators, semiconductors, metals, layered crystals, topological insulators, complex surfaces, adsorbates, ultra-thin films and clusters. The great potential of helium atom scattering for the study of atomic scale diffusion, THz surface collective excitations, including acoustic surface plasmons, and the future prospects of helium atom scattering are presented in the concluding chapters. The book will be valuable reading for all researchers and graduate students interested in dynamical processes at surfaces.
