Download or read book Determinants of Technical Efficiency of Coffee Production in Jimma Zone South West Ethiopia written by Negese Tamirat Mulatu and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture has been and continues to assume center stage in the economic policy of Ethiopia. Coffee is one of the most vital sources of income for many coffee growers and continues to be still the leading export commodity in the national economy of Ethiopia. Despite the economic use, the productivity and quality of the coffee is unsatisfactory. Adoption of coffee yield-enhancing technical efficiency is key in improving coffee productivity and quality. Therefore, this study aims to investigate determinants that influence the technical efficiency of coffee yield in Jimma Zone, South west Ethiopia. The primary data was collected among 398 coffee growers in research locations during 2020/21 season. Descriptive statistics and econometric methods were developed for the data analysis. The estimated average value of technical, allocative, and economic efficiencies was 82.63%, 78.35%, and 74.65% respectively, which shows the existence of inefficiency in coffee yield in the Jimma Zone. The findings of OLS regression indicated that technical inefficiency is affected by age, sex, education status, landholding, livestock holding, credit uses, extension uses, off-farm activity, land ownerships, seed, and variety of coffee planted. Coffee yield technical efficiency was associated with a significantly higher coffee yield and per capita annual income of coffee cultivator. Concerned bodies should give important attention to coffee yield enhancing technical efficiency which is base for improving yield. The summary of this coffee yield technical efficiency by policymakers and plan designers could bring better enhancement to the coffee cultivator in the study area.

Book Analysis of Factors Affecting the Technical Efficiency of Coffee Producers in Jimma Zone

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopian coffee production and its productivity level are unsatisfactory to uphold the country's comparative advantage. The study intends to examine possible reasons for low productive performance of coffee using cross sectional data gathered from Jimma zone. An attempt to measure technical efficiency of coffee producers, analysis of its determinants and the impact of various distributional assumptions on technical efficiency estimates is made. Accordingly, both error component model and technical inefficiency effects model have been estimated in one step approach after data have been transformed. Maximum likelihood estimate of technical efficiency was obtained from truncated normal model which was supposed to describe the data adequately. The result revealed that various distributional assumptions of technical inefficiency have approximately similar impact of on TE estimates. On average, coffee producers are 72% efficient, implying that there is ample opportunity for these farmers to raise output level at present technology. There is also advantage of scale economies linked to increasing returns to boost output. Except fertilizer, overutilization of other inputs leads to inefficiency. Technical inefficiency effects are modeled as a function of farmer specific socio-economic factors. Education, distance, family pressure and poor soil fertility tends to increase technical inefficiency of farmers whereas off farm income, proximity to market, cereal crop production, sex and good soil fertility improves their technical efficiency. Farmers can still produce higher output under available technology, indeed. Therefore, government should target at development of rural infrastructure, work diversification, rural employment creation, promotion of rural female management through awareness creation and soil conservation to overturn output loss by technical inefficiency of coffee producers in Jimma zone.

Book Technical Efficiency of Coffee Producers in Ethiopia

Download or read book Technical Efficiency of Coffee Producers in Ethiopia written by Alemayehu Ethiopia and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee is the main important organic perennial crop in Ethiopia which has enormous contribution in GDP of the country. The organic coffee Arabica of Ethiopia is getting comparative advantage from its export by letting the country to enjoy the scarce hard currency. Among five zones of coffee producing areas in Ethiopia, Jimma is the second most producers. However, the current coffee productivity of Jimma zone couldn't uphold the countries comparative advantage in coffee production. Being perennial crop, it will take long time to observe the result of applying technological advancement to coffee production with current country's Economic ability, structural and institutional rigidities. Having considered this and other fundamentals, many researchers have proposed improving technical efficiency of farmers is option less strategy which could increase productivity of crops in Short run. Taking this proposition in to account, the researcher tried to see if there could be a room for productivity improvement in the course of improving technical efficiency of coffee producers.

Book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities

Download or read book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities written by Abrham Gebreselassie and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5 (Excellent), Szent István University (Institute of Regional Economics and Rural Development), course: Rural Development and Agribusiness, language: English, abstract: The general objective of this paper is to analyze the trends of coffee sector in Ethiopia in general. Furthermore it wants to generate baseline information on production and marketing systems of the selected study area in particular by concentrating on parameters like production, marketing, institutional and organizational support and challenges and opportunities. Currently, Ethiopia contributes 3.6 percent of the total value and 3 percent of the total quantity of coffee traded to the global market, which leads the country to be the 10th largest exporter of coffee in the world and the first exporter in Africa. 40% of the total coffee production of Ethiopia is exported, which earns 33% of the overall value of agricultural goods exported and 24% of the whole export value of the country. Over one-third of the population living in the rural areas and over 15 million populations sustain their livelihoods and participated in coffee production. There are around one million coffee growers in the country. Coffee has been an important commodity which has got greater attention by the government of Ethiopia. It is the first cash crop that the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) started trading operations in April 2008 in order to advance coffee markets in the country. High costs and high risks of transaction were the features of agricultural markets in Ethiopia before 2008, with only one third of the production reaching the market. Besides, smallholder farmers have little information about the market which limits them to sell their final products at the nearby market, deal with good prices as well as minimizing their market risk. Coffee market incompetence chiefly affect the income of coffee farmers and discourage them in the process of coffee production and marketing which lead to a significantly decreases in the country’s foreign exchange. This suggests that it is very critical to study and monitor systematically the production and marketing systems in all coffee growing areas of the country for the sake of planning and designing suitable research and development interventions that are applicable to the specific systems.

Book The economics of teff Exploring Ethiopia s biggest cash crop

Download or read book The economics of teff Exploring Ethiopia s biggest cash crop written by Minten, Bart and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable poverty and food insecurity in Ethiopia, combined with the overwhelming majority of Ethiopians who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, make agricultural transformation a crucial development goal for the country. One promising improvement is to increase production of teff, the calorie- and nutrient-rich but low-yielding staple. The Economics of Teff: Exploring Ethiopia’s Biggest Cash Crop examines key aspects of teff production, marketing, and consumption, with a focus on opportunities for and challenges to further growth. The authors identify ways to realize teff’s potential, including improving productivity and resilience, selecting and scaling up new technologies, establishing distribution systems adapted to different areas’ needs, managing labor demand and postharvest operations, and increasing access to larger and more diverse markets. The book’s analysis and policy conclusions should be useful to policy makers, researchers, and others concerned with Ethiopia’s economic development.

Book Technical Efficiency of Smallholder Farmers in Tigray Region Ethiopia

Download or read book Technical Efficiency of Smallholder Farmers in Tigray Region Ethiopia written by Shumet Asefa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture sector in Ethiopia is characterized by its poor performance, while the population, which largely depends on agriculture, is growing at a faster rate. This necessitates looking for means to increase the productivity of smallholder farmers either by introducing new technologies or improving their technical efficiency at existing technology. And hence, this thesis provides new estimates of small holder farmers' technical efficiency and its principal determinants using a rural Tigray micro finance survey data collected in 2009. Both descriptive and econometric methods are used. The hypotheses tests confirm the adequacy of Cobb-Douglas over Translog frontier; the appropriateness of using SFA over OLS; the joint statistical significance of inefficiency effects; the appropriateness of using truncated normal distribution for one sided error; and the increasing returns to scale nature of the stochastic production function.

Book Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia

Download or read book Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia written by Paul Dorosh and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perception of Ethiopia projected in the media is often one of chronic poverty and hunger, but this bleak assessment does not accurately reflect most of the country today. Ethiopia encompasses a wide variety of agroecologies and peoples. Its agriculture sector, economy, and food security status are equally complex. In fact, since 2001 the per capita income in certain rural areas has risen by more than 50 percent, and crop yields and availability have also increased. Higher investments in roads and mobile phone technology have led to improved infrastructure and thereby greater access to markets, commodities, services, and information. In Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia: Progress and Policy Challenges, Paul Dorosh and Shahidur Rashid, along with other experts, tell the story of Ethiopia's political, economic, and agricultural transformation. The book is designed to provide empirical evidence to shed light on the complexities of agricultural and food policy in today's Ethiopia, highlight major policies and interventions of the past decade, and provide insights into building resilience to natural disasters and food crises. It examines the key issues, constraints, and opportunities that are likely to shape a food-secure future in Ethiopia, focusing on land quality, crop production, adoption of high-quality seed and fertilizer, and household income. Students, researchers, policy analysts, and decisionmakers will find this book a useful overview of Ethiopia's political, economic, and agricultural transformation as well as a resource for major food policy issues in Ethiopia. Book Cooperatives for Staple Crop Marketing

Download or read book Cooperatives for Staple Crop Marketing written by Tanguy Bernard and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural producer organizations (RPOs), such as farmers' organizations or rural cooperatives, offer a means for smallholder farmers in developing countries to sell their crops commercially. RPOs hold particular promise for Sub-Saharan Africa, where small-scale farming is the primary livelihood but commercialization of food crops is very limited. Using the experience of smallholders in Ethiopia as a case study, this research monograph identifies the benefits of RPOs for small farmers, as well as the conditions under which such organizations most successfully promote smallholder commercialization. The evidence from Ethiopia indicates that RPOs do increase farmers' profits from crop sales, but that the beneficiaries do not tend to be the poorest smallholders. Moreover, an RPO's marketing effectiveness is precarious: it can easily diminish if the number or diversity of its members increases or if it provides more non-marketing services. The authors conclude that RPOs have a role to play in the agricultural development of Sub-Saharan Africa, but that role should be complemented by other programs that directly target the poorest farmers. Further, the effectiveness of RPOs should be preserved by allowing them to follow their own agendas rather than being encouraged to take on non-marketing activities. The assessment of RPOs presented in this monograph should be a valuable resource for policymakers and researchers concerned with economic development and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa.
