Book Determinants of Revenue Efficiency in the Malaysian Islamic Banking Sector

Download or read book Determinants of Revenue Efficiency in the Malaysian Islamic Banking Sector written by Fadzlan Sufian and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides new empirical evidence on the revenue efficiency in the Malaysian Islamic banking sector during the period 2006 to 2010. We also examine the internal and external factors influencing the revenue efficiency of the Islamic banks. The sample comprised of 17 domestic and foreign Islamic banks. We employ the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to compute the revenue efficiency levels. The results indicate that the domestic Islamic banks have exhibited lower revenue efficiency levels compared to their foreign bank peers. We find that capitalization, market power, and liquidity have positive and significant relationships with Malaysian Islamic banks' revenue efficiency. The results indicate that the impacts are not uniform across Islamic banks of different ownership forms.

Book The Efficiency of Islamic Banking Industry

Download or read book The Efficiency of Islamic Banking Industry written by Fadzlan Sufian and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the performance of Malaysian Islamic banking sector during the period of 2001-2005. Several efficiency estimates of individual banks are evaluated using non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Two different approaches have been employed to differentiate how efficiency scores vary with changes in inputs and outputs. To examine the impact of risk factor on Islamic bank efficiency, we have incorporated problem loans as a nondiscretionary input variable in our analysis. The findings suggest that during the period of study, scale inefficiency dominates pure technical inefficiency in the Malaysian Islamic banking sector. We found that foreign banks have exhibited higher technical efficiency compared to their domestic peers. The inclusion of risk factors has mixed impact on Malaysian Islamic banks' efficiency. The results seems to suggest that while potential economies of scale may be overestimated when risk factors are excluded, pure technical efficiency estimates on the other hand, tend to be much more sensitive to the exclusion of risk factors. The empirical results from the Spearman and Pearson tests reinforce these findings.

Book Determinants of Maqasid Al shari ah based Performance Measurement Practices

Download or read book Determinants of Maqasid Al shari ah based Performance Measurement Practices written by Muhammad Ahmar bin Ali and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic banking has emerged as a thriving industry because demand is increasing in both developed and developing countries including Malaysia. Islamic banks serve Muslim and non-Muslim communities with interest-free financial products and services. The development of Islamic banks should be in tandem with their contributions to achieve the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shari'ah). Maqasid al-Shari'ah should form an integral part of the strategies underpinning the development of the Islamic financial system. However, the growth of Islamic banks is being challenged as they are not able to achieve Maqasid al-Shari'ah. It is argued that the failure to achieve Maqasid al-Shari'ah is caused by the weakness of the Performance Measurement System (PMS) of the banks. The key role of a PMS is to provide a link between business strategies and organizational objectives. Thus, the PMS of Islamic banks must be adapted to align with Maqasid al-Shari'ah. This study aims to explore the performance measurement practices in Malaysian Islamic banks based on Maqasid al-Shari'ah. The study also examines the differences between the two types of Islamic bank in Malaysia, namely, full-fledged Islamic banks and Islamic banking subsidiaries, in terms of Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures and organizational performance. To gather data for this study, the researcher distributed 146 questionnaires to various participants from head officers to senior managers in each department/business unit of all 16 Islamic commercial banks in Malaysia. The results indicate that only technological advancement and regulatory compliance have a direct relationship with the Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures. In addition, the results also indicate that having Maqasid al Shari'ah-based performance measures would enhance the organizational performance of Islamic banks. The results also reveal that a differentiation strategy, technological advancement, innovativeness, and regulatory compliance bring about greater interdependence on the Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures, which induces improved organizational performance in Islamic banks. This study also found that financial and non-financial measures as well as performance measures based on the Maqasid al-Shari'ah framework are equally important and are being implemented in Islamic banks in Malaysia. However, the findings show that there are significant differences in terms of Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures as well as organizational performance for both types of Islamic bank. Therefore, this study contributes to the performance measurement literature on Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures in the context of Islamic banks.

Book Relationship Between Islamic Banking Profitability and Determinants of Efficiency

Download or read book Relationship Between Islamic Banking Profitability and Determinants of Efficiency written by Mohamad Akbar Noor and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper investigates the efficiency of the 78 Islamic banks in 25 countries for the period 1992-2009. The efficiency estimates of individual banks are evaluated using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. The empirical findings seem to suggest that the Islamic banks have exhibited high Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE). A multivariate analysis based on the Tobit model reinforces these findings and significantly associated with operating expenses against asset, size, equity, NPL, Asia Financial Crisis and national income level (GDP). The Fixed Effect Model (FEM) used to analyze profitability proposed that profit efficiency is positive and statistically significant with operating expenses against asset, equity, high income countries and non- performing loans against total loans. Interestingly, the empirical results show that more profitable banks are those that have higher operating expenses against asset, more equity against asset and concentrated at high income countries, demonstrating a close relationship between monetary factors in determining Islamic banks profitability.

Book What s in It for Me Profiling Opportunity Seeking Customers in Malaysian Islamic Banking Sector

Download or read book What s in It for Me Profiling Opportunity Seeking Customers in Malaysian Islamic Banking Sector written by Ousmane Seck and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims at analyzing the preferences of Malaysian bank customers with a focus on identifying characteristics of the opportunity seekers, those who only consider the economic benefit of the product offered. We also look at the determinants of consumers preferences for financial products used for resource mobilization, and for financing of business start-ups. Starting from an innovative methodology of identifying opportunity seekers as clients with inconsistency in their preferences, we apply asymptotic statistical methods for estimation, comparison of binomial proportions and with multinomial discrete choice on a survey of 1858 retail consumers. We find that although Muslims are more likely to choose Islamic banks, they are also the most likely customers to be economic value seekers. In addition, our findings support that the growth of Islamic banks in Malaysia is conditional on their ability to attract high-income earners.

Book Determinants of Bank Perfomance in Malaysia

Download or read book Determinants of Bank Perfomance in Malaysia written by Aizat Bin Alias @ Abdul Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to compare and investigate the performance of Islamic banks against conventional banks, and foreign Islamic banks against domestic Islamic banks in Malaysia for the period 2006 to 2010. The study uses 33 banks in Malaysia comprise of 18 commercial banks, 15 Islamic banks, I 0 domestic Islamic banks, and 5 foreign Islamic banks. Financial ratios of return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) are used as dependent variables and independent variables comprise of loan loss provisions to total assets, net loans to total assets, total overheads to total assets, shareholders equity ratio, bank size (total assets), gross domestic products and inflation rate. Descriptive, correlation, multiple regression and test of significance for equality of means analyses were employed to test the hypotheses. In general, the study found that the independent variables respond inconsistently on dependent variables based on type of the banks. Furthermore, the study found that the conventional banks perform better than Islamic banks in term of profitability, size and assets quality. Same goes to domestic Islamic banks where they perform better than foreign Islamic banks in term of profitability, size and asset quality.

Book An Overview of Islamic Finance

Download or read book An Overview of Islamic Finance written by Mr.Mumtaz Hussain and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic finance has started to grow in international finance across the globe, with some concentration in few countries. Nearly 20 percent annual growth of Islamic finance in recent years seems to point to its resilience and broad appeal, partly owing to principles that govern Islamic financial activities, including equity, participation, and ownership. In theory, Islamic finance is resilient to shocks because of its emphasis on risk sharing, limits on excessive risk taking, and strong link to real activities. Empirical evidence on the stability of Islamic banks, however, is so far mixed. While these banks face similar risks as conventional banks do, they are also exposed to idiosyncratic risks, necessitating a tailoring of current risk management practices. The macroeconomic policy implications of the rapid expansion of Islamic finance are far reaching and need careful considerations.

Book Islamic Banking

Download or read book Islamic Banking written by Mr.Kangni Kpodar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the determinants of the pattern of Islamic bank diffusion around the world using country-level data for 1992 - 2006. The analysis illustrates that income per capita, share of Muslims in the population and status as an oil producer are linked to the development of Islamic banking, as are economic integration with Middle Eastern countries and proximity to Islamic financial centers. Interest rates have a negative impact on Islamic banking, reflecting the implicit benchmark for Islamic banks. The quality of institutions does not matter, probably because the often higher hurdle set by Shariah law trumps the quality of local institutions in most countries. The 9/11 attacks were not important to the diffusion of Islamic banking; but they coincided with rising oil prices, which are a significant factor in the diffusion of Islamic banking. Islamic banks also appear to be complements to, rather than substitutes for, conventional banks.

Book On Islamic Banking Performance and Financial Innovations

Download or read book On Islamic Banking Performance and Financial Innovations written by Mondher Bellalah and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic banking has seen rapid growth during the last two decades. This is a result of the liberalization of financial regulation, the globalization of financial markets, technological changes, product innovation, the birth of several new Islamic States, and a growing Islamic presence in the West, among other factors. New innovations have allowed economists and religious scholars to bring new products to almost all areas of banking and insurance, products which would previously have been extremely controversial. This book provides a better understanding of the Muslim community around the world of Islamic economics and its importance, especially in these days of financial crisis. The book will also serve as a reference manual for teaching the theory and practice of Islamic banking and Islamic financial innovations around the world. Islamic finance courses at universities are highly important since Islamic financial innovations remain very limited, and additional efforts have to be made in this area.

This book was released on 2016-12-30 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Islamic jurisprudence, a comprehensive ethic has been formulated governing how business and commerce should be run, how accountability to God and the community is to be achieved, and how banking and finance is to be arranged. This Handbook examines how well these values are translated into actual performance. It explores whether those holding true to the system are hindered and put at a disadvantage or whether the Islamic institutions have been able to demonstrate that faith-based activities can be rewarding, both economically and spiritually.
