Book excerpt: The central theme addressed in this book is what determines joint venture formation in the food and agribusiness sector in sub-Saharan African countries, and what can be done to promote such ventures. A mixed research design is adopted for the study, incorporating a case study and a survey. The study attempts to answer such questions as: how conducive is the business environment in African countries for international joint venture formation? What are the preferred investment modes by foreign firms and why? Are there any significant differences between large MNCs and small/medium MNCs towards joint venturing in African countries?

Book Guide for the design and implementation of public private partnerships for agribusiness development in Africa

Download or read book Guide for the design and implementation of public private partnerships for agribusiness development in Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author]. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unleashing the potential for inclusive agricultural growth and transformation in Africa requires coordinated and strategic public and private investment in the agriculture sector. [Author] Against a background of limited government resources and expertise, public–private partnerships are increasingly being promoted as a mechanism to pool resources, reduce risk, improve productivity and drive growth in the agriculture and food sectors. [Author] In line with this trend, many African countries have recently expressed an interest in further understanding the potential for public–private partnerships for agribusiness development (agri-PPPs) to deliver on these transformative goals. [Author] This publication aims to provide guidance to African policymakers and potential private sector investors on the core principles of designing and implementing agri-PPPs that will promote the transformation of Africa’s agriculture sector in an inclusive and sustainable way. [Author] This area of work is of particular interest to the African Union Commission (AUC) which has highlighted agri-PPPs as a key tool in the delivery of the results under the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) and the Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth for Shared Prosperity and Livelihoods. Book excerpt: This is an empirically rich, theoretically grounded and timely analysis of an important aspect of the political economy of South-South relations. -Seifudein Adem, Professor, Graduate School of Global Studies, Doshisha University, Japan. This book makes a valuable contribution in outlining ways for India and Africa to work together towards ensuring greater food security. -Philani Mthembu, Executive Director, Institute for Global Dialogue, University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa. This volume showcases the ongoing trends and challenges in South-South cooperation between India and select countries in Africa, for achieving food security and poverty reduction. Scholars and practitioners share diverse perspectives on the role of India's development compact; aid, trade, private sector driven Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), and concessional Lines of Credit (LOCs) to the agricultural and agro-processing sectors in Africa. India- Africa cooperation also underscores that the sharing of knowledge and capabilities -technical and financial, along with North- South partnerships- through trilateral and multilateral mechanisms, can upscale the agriculture and agro-processing sectors, address the food security agenda, and reduce poverty. The axial questions in this volume explore how cooperation between India and countries in Africa impact intra-South trading, capacity building, and the investment landscape. Book Securing Africa s Land for Shared Prosperity

Download or read book Securing Africa s Land for Shared Prosperity written by Frank F. K. Byamugisha and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on land administration and reform in Sub-Saharan Africa, and is highly relevant to all developing countries around the world. It provides simple practical steps to turn the hugely controversial subject of "land grabs into a development opportunity by improving land governance to reduce the risks of dispossessing poor landholders while ensuring mutually beneficial investors’ deals. The book shows how Sub Saharan Africa can leverage its abundant and highly valuable natural resources to eradicate poverty by improving land governance through a ten point program to scale up policy reforms and investments at a cost of USD 4.5 billion. The book points out formidable challenges to implementation including high vulnerability to land grabbing and expropriation with poor compensation as about 90 percent of rural lands in Sub Saharan Africa are undocumented, but also timely opportunities since high commodity prices and investor interest in large scale agriculture have increased land values and returns to investing in land administration. It argues that success in implementation will require participation of many players including Pan-African organizations, Sub Saharan Africa governments, the private sector, civil society and development partners; but that ultimate success will depend on the political will of Sub Saharan Africa governments to move forward with comprehensive policy reforms and on concerted support by the international development community. Its rigorous analysis of land governance issues, yet down-to-earth solutions, are a reflection of Byamugisha's more than 20 years of global experience in land reform and administration especially in Asia and Africa. This volume will be of great interest to and relevant for a wide audience interested in African development, global studies in land, and natural resource management.

Book Trends and Impacts of Foreign Investment in Developing Country Agriculture

Download or read book Trends and Impacts of Foreign Investment in Developing Country Agriculture written by Pascal Liu and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial increases in agricultural investments in developing countries are needed to combat poverty and realize food security and nutrition goals. There is evidence that agricultural investments can generate a wide range of developmental benefits, but these benefits cannot be expected to arise automatically and some forms of large-scale investment carry risks for host countries. Although there has been much debate about the potential benefits and risks of international investment, there is no systematic evidence on the actual impacts on the host country and their determinants. In order to acquire an in-depth understanding of potential benefits, constraints and costs of foreign investment in agriculture and of the business models that are more conducive to development, FAO has undertaken research in developing countries. This publication summarizes the results of this research, in particular through the presentation of the main findings of case studies in nine developing countries. It presents case studies on policies to attract foreign investment in agriculture and their impacts on national economic development in selected countries in Africa, Asian and Latin America.
